The Saint: Las Palmas V Espanyol
With a 1-0 defeat midweek away to Real Betis, Las Palmas still sit in mid table but they need another win to make sure they are definitely safe and remain in the big league next season.
With a quick start against 15th place Espanyol, a good ball from Mono is hit just too hard for Willian to connect with at the far post.
The first attempt from the visitors in the 14th min see’s Lemos make a great sliding tackle to block what was a certain goal for Espanyol after a great run by midfielder Perez.
A good save at his near post by Raul in the home goal denies the lively Espanyol left winger, Burgui.
Then on 29mins, the best chance of the half falls to Espanyol, a free kick is floated to the far post where Perez is left unmarked with LP trying to play offside, and only the keeper to beat, he somehow puts his shot the wrong side of the post. Lucky escape there for the home side!
More pressure from the visitors see’s Raul push the ball past his post with a great shot from the edge of the box.
Again a good break from the visitors but a well timed tackle by Simon denies them another chance.
Then in injury time in the first half, totally against the run of play, LP win the ball midfield, play the ball wide on the right to El Zhar, he uses his pace and gets inside of the box and drills his shot into the bottom corner. 1-0 to LP.
Half Time – Las Palmas 1 Espanyol 0
Las Palmas had 1 shot and 1 goal!!! They can count themselves really lucky to go in at half time with a lead. Espanyol have created 3/4 really good chances with Raul in the home goal having to be in top form to keep them out. LP need to be more attacking in the 2nd half, and after their recent run, I’m surprised how shaky they look at the back.
Great start to the 2nd half, Willian breaks down the left and lets fly a powerful shot, which is saved well but the ball falls nicely for Viera who coolly slots it home in the bottom corner to make it 2-0 to the home side.
On 56mins, Espanyol lose the ball near the corner flag, LP break really quickly and Mono gets brought down outside the box. From the resulting free kick, Bigas jumps the highest and his header finds the bottom corner of the net, 3-0 LP.
Another great chance for LP on 70mins, some nice one touch football sets up Simon down the right wing, he puts in a lovely cross which is met by Willian but his shot is blocked by the defender on the line.
3mins later, Mono puts in another dangerous cross but some last ditch defending denies El Zhar yet another scoring chance. From the resulting corner, the ball is cleared to the edge of the box where Wakaso hits a sweet left foot volley into the top corner of the net. Best goal of the game and the 19,353 fans go wild with delight.
In the last 10mins, LP create more chances but some good goalkeeping and defending denies the home side improving the score line.
Full Time – Las Palmas 4 Espanyol 0
The verdict of The Saint – This was definitely a tale of two halves. Espanyol were very unlucky not to be wining at half time but found themselves a goal down.
LP looked tried, 3 games in 6 days looked like it was too much for the them. Then in the second half they completely took control of the game and could have won by many goals.
This win now lifts them to 8th in the league, their highest position of the season. It’s so important they can try and stay in the top half, as they will receive more TV money, which hopefully will go towards strengthening the squad for next season. With only 3 games now remaining, and with fixtures against teams close to them, they have a good chance of remaining there.
The last home game of the season will take place the weekend of the 8th May against Athletic Club Bilbao. Kick off at 4pm. PIO PIO
