We have a gloriously busy May weekend ahead, with events and festivities to explore and enjoy on Gran Canaria. In the south, there is the Patron Saint’s festivities for El Tablero, a wedding fair in Meloneras, it’s Maspalomas PRIDE march weekend and the Puerto de Mogán Jazz festival gets underway. Fiestas de El Tablero | 11-21 May


A lovely local fiesta, often the first of the big summer fiestas is the patronal saint’s celebration in honour of the Holy Trinity, ‘Fiestas Patronales en honor a la Santísima Trinidad’ in the southern residential neighbourhood of El Tablero, on the other side of the GC-1 from Sonnenland from 11-21 May 2023.

Highlights this weekend:

Friday 12 May: The announcing parade (the Pregón) at 18:00 from the Cultural centre to Plaza.
at 20:30 The Gala Campensina infantil, the traditional election of a girl and a boy to represent this years Peasant Child of the Fields, recalling this areas agricultural and tomato harvesting traditions.
at 21:00 night of fiesta on the plaza with music.

Saturday 13 May: Romería, pilgrimage offering to start at 18:00 with all dressed in traditional Canarian outfits with carts, floats and various vehicles, full of offerings to their patron saint, being brought down to the church with a mixture of solemn ceremony, exuberant traditional music and much honey rum!

The Meloneras ‘Wedding Weekend’ Fair 13-14 May 2023.

The Karisimbi Hall of the Lopesan Baobab Resort will host, on Saturday and Sunday, the first edition of Meloneras Wedding Weekend by Majestic Events, which will bring together some of the main suppliers in the sector.

In total, there will be more than 30 exhibitors, presenting some of their best work and establishing contact with future clients. In this way, the Meloneras Wedding Weekend brings together the best photographers, videographers, companies dedicated to decoration, leisure, beauty, food and beverages, wedding planning agencies, fashion and accessories assistants, audiovisual support companies, and car rentals.

European Night of Museums | 13 May

The 19th ‘European Museum Night’ is an event that takes place in more than 3000 museums, and in nearly 30 European countries, and is celebrated on the third Saturday of May. It is an initiative created in 2005 by the French Ministry of Culture, which has the support of UNESCO, the Council of Europe and ICOM, and takes place in parallel to the events of International Museum Day, on May 18.

 

SATURDAY, 13 MAY IN VEGUETA, LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA

Enjoy the European Night of Museums in Vegueta! Admission to all the events of the European Night of Museums will be free until the capacity of each activity is complete.

The Casa de Colón, the Americanist museum of Vegueta, displays all its magic at night. The night tours of the patios and permanent exhibition rooms of the Casa de Colón offer a walk through the History and Art of the Canary Islands and its relations with America.
In addition, this year, and with the help of the technical staff responsible for the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the five thematic blocks of the ‘Isla de Arte’ exhibition. A collection for the Museo de Bellas Artes de Gran Canaria’ on display at the Casa de Colón, one of the cornerstones of the ‘Vegueta art triangle’, until June 18.
The free passes to visit the exhibition in a guided manner in order of arrival have the following times: 20:00, 21:00, 22:00, and 23:00.
To visit the permanent exhibition halls of the Museum, the hours are 20:30, 21:30, and 22:30.
Parallel to these nocturnal tours, at 21:30, the concert ‘Ars Movie Project’ will begin in the courtyard of the Casa de Colón. ‘Ars Movie Project’ is dedicated to collecting the greatest hits from throughout the history of cinema.

The Museo Canario joins the celebrations of the European Night of Museums with a special program designed for the occasion.
On Saturday, the museum will open its doors between 19:00 and 00:00, with free admission and a varied program of activities in which a visit to the rooms can be combined with various artistic disciplines. The public will be able to attend all the activities or choose those that are of interest to them.
The evening begins at 19:00 with the opening of the doors. Visitors will be able to tour the archeology exhibition independently and enjoy all the digital resources that have been launched in recent times, such as virtual tours, 3D pieces, and augmented reality (for which it is recommended to previously download the “Windows to the Past” application) and a journey through the senses. These are resources that take advantage of technological advantages to offer additional and innovative information on the content of the permanent exhibition.
The temporary exhibition “The light of the port” will also remain open, with which the Canary Museum and Puertos de Las Palmas commemorate the 140 years of the first stone of the port of La Luz as a port of refuge.
During the visit, the assistance of specialized guides will be offered to answer questions and queries, and you will also be able to enjoy various musical intervention and a temporary dance performance

The Atlantic Centre for Modern Art, CAAM, celebrates the International Night of Museums by extending its normal opening hours until 00:00, with free admission, as usual.
The public will be able to tour the current exhibitions at the main venue of the art centre, that is, ‘Isla de Arte. A collection for the Cabildo de Gran Canaria’ (floors -1 and 0), ‘Corpografías’ by the Brazilian artist Analivia Cordeiro (floor 1) and ‘Matriz’ by the Brazilian artist Paula Scamparini (floor 2), while the exhibition ‘Immeditation’ by the German artist Ulf Saupe, at the CAAM-San Antonio Abad, is held at its usual timetable until 21:00.
In addition, the evening will be musically enlivened between 21:00 and 23:00 with a live performance by the duo made up of Isa Izquierdo and Alberto MVBA on the CAAM Terrace. The woman from Tenerife is presented in a duo format. He combines his voice and guitar with different sounds created, played and looped live by Alberto MVBA. Admission to this event is also free, although with limited capacity.

 

LPA Motown @ INFECAR | 12-14 May 🏍

The 7th edition of the fair, all about the world of motorcycles and sustainable mobility between 12-14 May 2023 at INFECAR in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The Motorcycle and Sustainable Urban Mobility Fair, better known as LPA Motown, will once again bring together all kinds of products and services related to the motorcycle sector with exhibitors, so that the audience will be able to analyse a wide variety of models for sale, in addition to being able to purchase all kinds of products related to the motorcycle world, enjoying at the same time exhibitions, workshops, conferences, technical talks, children activities, food truck areas, and concerts.

This year, the event will have more than 65 exhibitors from the main brands, and 90 activities such as demonstrations, motorcycle tests, workshops and training courses, talks, music concerts, raffles for wonderful prizes and fun workshops. Halls 6 and 7 and tent 5 of Infecar will host the seventh edition of the LPA Motown.

ITF Beach tennis in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria | 9-14 May

Las Canteras Beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is hosting the 15th edition of the classic and top-level tournament on the ITF Beach Tennis World Tour 2023 world circuit. Under the name ‘Sand Classic Series’ that has only been awarded to 4 tournaments, in Reunion, Germany, Brazil, and eastern Gran Canaria will have $50,000 Prize Money in the main category, in addition to €3,000 in the Individual category and another €3,000 for the Mixed.

Livestock Fair 2023 and the 30th Select Livestock Exhibition Contest in Arucas | 13-14 May

The island’s biggest Livestock fair, ‘Feria de Ganado 2023 y XXX Concurso de Ganado Selecto’ takes place this Saturday and Sunday in the Experimental Farm of Cabildo de Gran Canaria on the coast of Arucas.

Opening hours: on Saturday from 10:00 to 18:30, and Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00.

108 exhibitors, distributed in four areas and six thematic blocks, and 1,201 copies will be exhibited, 7% more than in previous editions.

There will be an area dedicated to local produce, with 42 exhibitors, 17 from agricultural markets and 25 from local producers, of which 10 are organic producers. Likewise, in the section dedicated to crafts, there will be 20 exhibitors, of which 8 belong to the Foundation for the Study and Development of Canarian Crafts (FEDAC).

Agricultural and livestock machinery and supplies section with four exhibitors. An institutional area with 12 pavilions will be installed, including the Canarian Institute of Agrarian Research (ICIA) and those of 10 municipalities (Arucas, Moya, Santa Mª de Guía, Tejeda, Valleseco, Teror, La Aldea, Gáldar, Ingenuity and Telde).

Gastronomy area with Cochino Negro, La Croquetería de Moya, Échale Mojo, La Quícara, and Marwin (‘Chef road’).

•  As a novelty, this edition has included content related to sustainability. There will be two exhibitors related to renewable energies: Ernasol and Atlanta; an international plastic recycling project: ‘Precious plastic’, and a workshop for the Ministry of the Environment: ‘Gran Canaria Recycles’.

During the two days, 12 workshops and children’s activities will also be organised, a performance of Cancionero Isleño, coffee, cheese, honey, and wine tastings will be held, with a maximum of 20 participants, and prior registration at the starting point. Information and technical visits to the livestock exhibition will be made, also with prior registration, guided by a veterinary professional and lasting approximately one hour.

On Sunday, at 13:00, the decision of the XXX Select Cattle Contest and the delivery of the 60 trophies in 11 categories, which will be awarded by a jury made up of 15 veterinary professionals and whose total amount amounts to €19,910.

The transport company Global will increase its services for the lines that pass through the venue of the fair.

Stone and Flower in Arucas | 11-21 May

It’s a gorgeous time to visit Arucas this weekend with  ‘Piedra y Flor‘ event, full of plants and sculptures, culture, biodiversity, landscape, architecture, music, and local history.

Parque de las Flores, Plaza de la Constitución, the Municipal Library Auditorium, Calle León y Castillo… the most significant public spaces in the historic center of Arucas are transformed these days and then some.

Spring Trade Fair in Teror 13-14 May

The historic mountain market town of Teror will hold its ‘Feria comercial de la Primavera‘  this Saturday and Sunday, in which more than fifty establishments in the old town will take their products to the streets, boosting the activity of the Teror Open Commercial Zone.

The Department of Commerce of the Teror Town Council and the Teror Business Association (ASETEROR) have also organised a program of entertainment activities during the two days of the fair, with music performances, workshops and activities for the family.

The opening hours of the Teror Trade Fair, which will be located throughout the helmet, casco with stalls outside the establishments on Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00.
🎁 The Fair will have a PHOTOCALL in Plaza del Pino, where the customers of the Teror Open Commercial Zone will be able to take a photo with their purchases and upload it to their Facebook mentioning the page @laferiadelaprimera. This way you can participate in the raffle that will be held at the end of the Fair.

 

Gáldar in Flower | until 24 May 🌺🌴

More than 11,000 plants and flowers will give colour to the historic centre of Gáldar until 24 May, in the 3rd edition of the exhibition ‘Gáldar en Flor’. Geraniums, begonias, sunflowers, daisies, lavenders, rosemary and a wide selection of plants will decorate the route along Calle Capitán Quesada and around Plaza de Santiago accompanied by artistic compositions and fantasies that always surprise the visitor.

This is the 3rd edition of this exhibition, the spring edition of the ‘Flower Week’ which is traditionally held in December, and takes advantage of the great variety available during that time to give colour to the historic centre of the municipality. The Department of Parks and Gardens of the Gáldar City Council, directed by Carmen Pilar Mendoza Ramos, organises this exhibition featuring plants and flowers grown at Viveros Godoy, S.L, Poinsettias de Canarias S.L., Viveros Gáldar, S.L., and in the municipal nursery itself of the Gáldar Town Hall.

 

Markets in the south of Gran Canaria

• Friday is always market day in Playa de Mogán in the morning. This popular market is in one of the prettiest fishing harbour towns on Gran Canaria, very popular with tourists.

• On Saturday, the Maspalomas market offers all kinds of textiles, Objet dart and other articles, located now in a new venue at Parque Europeo in Playa del Inglés, while the municipal market is being re-built. It is one of the markets most enjoyed among visitors along with Friday’s in Playa de Mogán;
El Mercadillo de Maspalomas is on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 08:00 to 14:00.

• On Saturday in Arguineguín, a small second-hand market on Plaza Negra (the marketplace) in the morning 09:00-14:00 with a wide range pre-loved treasures.

• On Sunday, the “rastro” second-hand market, ****The second-hand market now takes place in the Ciudad deportiva de Maspalomas, next to football field 2 and close to Pepe Chiringo and Parque Sur de Maspalomas.

• This Sunday, the very popular biweekly farmers’ Market, ‘Mercado Agrícola y ganadero de San Fernando‘ will be held in the parking area next to the football Stadium and the municipal offices from 08:00 – 14:00. A chance to purchase fresh, locally-grown food and value-added produce directly from growers or producers —  an authentic retail experience.

INGENIO ES MÚSICA 

The ‘Ingenio is Music’ festival culminates this Friday, May 12, with jazz with its own label by the creators’ Alba Gil Aceytuno, Medina & Infante and Yul Ballesteros Trío. The last of the three concerts in this cycle, which will begin at 21:00, will once again take place in Parque Buen Suceso, with free admission for all audiences.

🎶Alba Gil Aceytuno, winner of the latest edition of the Capital Sonora band contest, will bring her proposal ‘Aguayro’, a project born with the idea of ​​capturing Alba’s personality, influences and style, accompanied by musicians with whom he has had a special connection for years. All of her songs are composed by her, with hints of jazz, hip-hop, punk rock and Canarian folklore. Alba Gil Aceytuno appears at this festival in a sextet format.

🎶The duo formed by the pianist José Alberto Medina and the guitarist Javier Infante will show with total honesty the fusion of the roots of Canarian music, with influences from jazz and traditional European chamber music. Strings and keys envelop the audience in authentic dialogue and mutual admiration. The Spanish guitar, along with the piano, give energy and dynamism to a repertoire of a universal nature.

🎶The guitarist and composer Yul Ballesteros arrives at ‘Ingenio es Música’ with his new album ‘Alma’, with which he shows his personal and musical evolution. For this musical journey, Yul Ballesteros is associated with Tana Santana (double bass) and Akior García (drums), with whom he completes a trio whose main characteristic is the sound of the group as a single entity, a single instrument
