A big July weekend ahead. Up on the north of the island, in the capital, we have music and performances on offer at the retro themed Big Bang Festival main weekend, as well as the world famous Temudas dance and theatre Festival and the Heineken Jazz festival. There will also a double fair at the main island fairground and convention centre, Infecar, throughout the weekend with renewable electric vehicles on show at the Movelec fair and a Wellnes expo, both available for a single entrance fee of €1.
Inland, in the mountains, one of the most popular events in the annual calenderin Teror is the Water Festival, and down on the south-east coast we have world class windsurfing action with the Wind & Waves Festival, windsurf world championship competitions starting this weekend presenting the very best of the best in the windy little seaside enclave of Pozo Izquierdo not far from Vecindario in Santa Lucia.
In the south there will be a lot of beer, tapas and music on offer in El Tablero on Saturday. The annual Virgen del Carmen festivities start in Mogán and on Saturday evening the Romeria pilgrimage offering in Arguineguin as well as the ever-popular water party on Sunday.

Sports Tip: Rugby fans (or rugby player fans… !) should definitely make their way down to to 19th Hole Meloneras on Saturday morning to get scrummed in for a world class rugby breakfast and join the buzz around the New Zealand All Blacks Vs The British & Irish Lions decider. The 26th edition of the Jazz festival is take place on several Canary Islands at the same time. As well as performances and club nights on Gran Canaria there are also free public outside concerts. In Las Palmas there is a free outdoor concert this Friday at Plaza del Pilar, ‘la Noche África’ starting at 20:30, an African themed night with performances from Souñou Yon (Nuestro Camino), Totó ST and Elenco Da Paz
Las Fiestas del Carmen 2017
One of the most hotly anticipated celebrations of the year, particularly on The Canary Islands and in the south of Gran Canaria, as Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen – St. Mary of Mount Carmel,) is the patron saint of sailors. Mogán starts their main festivities for the year, celebrating Virgen del Carmen on Friday and the fiestas go on until 30 July.
Friday 7 July : Artisanal exhibition on Plaza de las Marañuelas at 20:30. Election of Miss & Mister Costa Mogán Gala at 21:30 followed by musical performances
Saturday 8 July : Romeria-ofrenda, the Pilgrimage offering to the Virgen del Carmen starting at 19:00 from Avenida de Muelle ( the carriages and decorated carts gather along the road where the Arguineguín post office is located ). The route travels via the seaside Avenida Marañuela to Plaza Pérez Galdós in front of the church, where the offerings are given and followed by some lovely dancing on the plaza. After party at the market square with live music at 23:30.

Cabildo de Gran Canaria has organised the first electric vehicle exhibition to promote the use of cars, and bicycles with cleaner and quieter engines for use on Gran Canaria. The event at INFECAR will feature the first driver to have participated in the Dakar rally with an electric motorcycle, Alberto Bosch, among other guests, and will exhibit a Tesla lent to the event by an owner for the occasion.

The Movelec Electric Vehicle Show will showcase the latest models of cars, motorcycles and electric bikes in a 1,500 square meter space at Infecar Pavilion 5. More than a dozen dealers, maintenance companies and services are dedicated to this means of sustainable transport. Visitors, will pay a ticket of just one euro, will at the same time be able to visit the Salon ExpoBienestar installed at the Palace of Congresses, to learn about healthy habits for life with yoga classes, shiatsu and other disciplines, psychological consultations, guided meditations, therapies and various workshop conferences.
The doors of Infecar open this Friday and Saturday from 10:30 to 20:00 and visitors, pay a ticket of one euro, will also have access to the Movelec Electric Vehicle Show to find out about and try out the latest models of cars, motorcycles and electric bicycles.
At the Wellnes Expo the participating companies will offer massages, alternative therapies, reiki, chiromassage, foot reflexology, healing techniques based on traditional Chinese medicine, nutrition, sports and personalized training. There will also be exhibitors in aromatic incense sticks, stones and minerals, organic clothing and natural cosmetics such as brand Mussa Canaria offering body and face creams with extract of organic bananas of The Canary Islands which has protective moisturising properties, antioxidants and whose benefits lie in stimulation of collagen fibers, recommended for wounds, insect bites, acne or psoriasis.
In addition, the only store on Gran Canaria with biodegradable cleaning and hygiene products available in bulk, Goccia Verde, will be present offering its products with packaging that can be filled again and again. They also market a rather curious nut soap, which grows in Nepal and India and until now has been only available here online.
La Fiesta del Agua
The Water Festival in Teror commences this Friday. There is a wide variety of events going on including a beer festival over the weekend in Alameda Pío XII. The Festivities happenn from 7 – 29 July in the municipality of Teror. See the full program here ( in Spanish )
The 18th Handicraft Fair Villa de Teror on Saturday and Sunday in the Casco de Teror, with the participation of about 90 artisans from the Canary Islands. Plaza del Pino and surroundings on Saturday from 10:00- 20:00 and on Sunday 09:00-15:00.
On Saturday there is also children’s activities going on in Plaza de Sintes in front of the auditorium from 17:30-20:30 with inflatables workshops and animation and then some.
The 21st edition of this unique Theatre, Music and Dance festival is the meeting point for various world class artists and starts this weekend.

The festival of culture from 40’s, 50’s and 60’s with music, movies, and fashion. This is their main weekend of events so a good weekend to head out to Pueblo Canario in Las Palmas

III Rally Comarca Norte
The 3 edition of this northern region rally is on this weekend. The show stage on Friday and actual stages are driven on Saturday across the north of Gran Canaria. If you are a really keen rally fan you can check the road book here for the stages. The stages are Agaete-Gladar, Barranco de Moya, Firgas-Azuaje and Los Tilos-Guia.
When there is a rally going on it also means many traffic restrictions in the areas of the rally so stay vigilant up north on Saturday.

Nite race Holiday World
Night time running race happening around Holiday World on Saturday evening 20:00-23:00. As with any sporting events The Nite Race, (which ends in Holiday World) will mean that most of the streets surrounding this fun park will be closed on Saturday from 19:00 to midnight including the main street to access the underground parking of Holiday World.
Night race boasts 2 modalities (7K and 10K) with music, parties, a shopping area and various activities.
Fiestas Mayores de Santiago 2017
Galdár is celebrating their patron festivities and on Saturday a very local gala in the evening with a pre-hispanic native twist. The gala Election of the young Guayarmina ( a native Canario princess ) and the Bentejuí ( the warrior son of the the fifteenth century King of Galdár), starting at 21:00 in the Plaza de Santiago.

The 29th edition of the windsurfing world championship on Gran Canaria starts this weekend in Pozo Izquierdo. The competition will feature the best 68 riders on the professional circuit of the PWA World Tour Windsurfing in mens’ and womens’ categories, who have arrived on Gran Canaria, representing 15 nationalities, while the junior competition will break a new record with 30 promising young entries.
The program of activities of the Festival starts next Saturday, July 8th at 22:00 with the opening ceremony followed by a live concert at 23:00 by the group from Barcelona, Santo Machango, who will be the first group to take the stage of the ‘CarpadePozo’ (tent of Pozo) ‘. Weather permitting the competition itself starts on Sunday at 11:00. With a Beer Festival from 14:00, children’s workshops at 16:00. You can see the full program in English here.
There are many other events going on throughout the weekend. We definitely recommend you turn up to the Maspalomas Parque Sur at midday on Sunday for a bit of stretching with Lilly Rikhter.
