The Canary Weekend Tips 4-6 August’17

August is here and it is warm! Over the first weekend of every month, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria’s network of museums offer free visits and open doors to the public. The capital’s original shopping area, Triana, also celebrates with their open weekend offering various activities for kids and families. This weekend sees the first Mogán Tuna Fair in Arguineguin, celebrating one of the areas great traditions and industries.  Free big screen outdoor movie nights in the Maspalomas Parque Sur and around the island various other festivities are on offer… here are some of the highlights of our hand picked events for this weekend ahead on Gran Canaria.

3-6 August, Parque Sur, Maspalomas 

‘Cine De Una Isla De Verano’ – One Summer Island Cinema

As part of an island-wide series of outdoor movie events ‘Cine De Una Isla De Verano’, you can enjoy great movies through 20 municipalities on Gran Canaria over 59 FREE movie nights.

The films will be in Spanish but watching great movies outdoors sounds pretty great, especially if you’re learning to speak the language, it’s a perfect time to catch up on your Spanish and enjoy an in expensive evening out with friends and family =)  (psst… most of the kids won’t even notice!)

In Maspalomas the movies are being shown in Parque Sur de Maspalomas starting at 21:00

4-6 August, Arguineguín, Mogán

Feria del Atún 

The municipality of Mogán’s is having their first ‘Feria del Atún’, Tuna fair in the port of Arguineguín.

On Friday August 4, the fair will open for the public from 20:00 to 01:00 with the evening dedicated to wine tasting in “Noches de Vinos” and gastronomy. Tasty Canarian wines on offer and tapas made with tuna caught by Mogán’s fishermen. Various delicious dishes and wines at very reasonable prices.

On Sunday, the big day, events start at 12:00 with the presentation recognising and awarding local professionals in the fishing sector. During the day between 12:30-19:00 fishing demonstrations on a traditional fishing boat, a tuna cutting show, children’s activities, live music and live cooking exhibits as well as the opportunity to buy and taste tuna with various recipes and find out firsthand all the possibilities offered by this produce of the sea.

Also present will be professional chefs who will explain various recipes enlivened by live music between the experts. The chef of the Santo Santo Restaurant, Abraham Ortega (12:30-13:30) the chef from the Bohemia Hotel, Juanma Bertolín (14:15-15:15 ), and the cook from Casa Enrique Restaurant Alejandro Álamo (16:00-17:00) as well as pastry chef Luis Fuentes, members of the Acyre Gran Canaria Cooks Association, (17:45-18:45)

4-6 August, Agaete 

Las Fiestas de Las Nieves, Agaete 

Agaete, on the northwestern coast of the island is celebrating Fiestas Virgen de Las Nieves 2017 with festivities continuing until August 27

On Friday, the ever popular Bajada de la rama, lowering the branch procession starting at 10:00 and an evening of music followed by a firework show at 01:00

Traditional Religious events on Saturday: Eucharist at 09:00 and 10:30 at the hermitage de Las Nieves followed by the procession to Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Conceptión at 12:00

On Sunday, solemn Eucharist and procession with the image of Virgen de la Nieves starts at 11:30

Tip : Romeria, the pilgrimage offering  is on Saturday 12 August. See the full program here

4-5 August, Las Palmas 

Temudas Festival

The 21st edition of this unique and super spectacular Theatre, Music and Dance festival is the meeting point for various world class artists and finishes this weekend. The festival features many free free outdoor performances for the public.

Friday and Saturday, both evenings, the visual theater Titanick (from Germany) performing:  Alice on the Run starting at 22:00 at Plaza de Santa Ana. free entry to this 75 minute long show.  Think mad cap action, stunning light shows, pyrotechnics and much more.

Theater Titanick, which already surprised the public on Gran Canaria at the 16th Festival of Theater, Music and Dance Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in 2012, with its show Firebirds, returns five years later with a spectacular inspired by the world of Lewis Carroll. Alice’s journey, through strange places and situations, is a metaphor for the odyssey of those seeking a new home.

5-6 August, Gran Canaria

Museos en finde …

As with every first weekend of a month, the island network of museums run by the island council, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, will open their doors for free visits.

Museums: Casa de Colón, (in Las Palmas) Saturday 10:00-18:00 and Sunday 10:00-15:00
Casa-Museo Perez Galdos, (in Las Palmas) Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00
Casa-Museo Tomas Morales, (in Moya), Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00
Casa-Museo León y Castillo , (in Telde), Saturday 10:00-22:00 and Sunday 10:00-19:00.
Casa-Museo Antonio Padron -Indian Art Centre (in Gáldar) Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00-19.00.
Museum and Archaeological Park Cueva Pintada (in Gáldar) Saturday, from 10:30-19:30 and Sunday, from 11:00-19.00. First visit on Saturday at 10:30 and Sundays at 11:00. Last guided tour on Saturday at 18:00 and Sunday at 17:30. Limited capacity.

5-6 August, Triana, Las Palmas 

Primer Fin de Semana Abierto

First weekend of the month also means Triana shopping area in Las Palmas is open for business with activities on the side, with circus as the main ingredient for the weekend fun on offer.

Saturday activities ( 11:00-14:00) includes among other things; workshops in juggling and Rafaelillo the clown cabaret from 12:00 to 13:00 in Triana 72.

On Sunday ( 11:00-18:00) extra activities includes musical performances at the Shack Bar, Rafaelillo cabaret at Plaza Cairasco from 12:00-13:00 as well as face painting, more circus performances among other things.

5-6 August, La Aldea de San Nicolas 

XII Slalom Automovilístico La Aldea 2017

Thirty vehicles, some from Tenerife, will participate in the 12th Slalom Automovilístico La Aldea 2017, which takes place this weekend in the Barranco de La Aldea. In this edition there will be two scoring tests for the Championship of Gran Canaria, instead of one, and a circuit of five kilometers, two more than in the previous edition. Driven in the channel of the main ravine of the municipality, a space with exceptional conditions for the race

On Saturday, the verifications and training in Avenida de San Nicholas, from 12:00. At 15:30 publication of list of pilots participating. From 16:00, start of the first timed section of four legs in the Barranco. At the end, trophy delivery.

On Sunday 6 will be the second stretch, also four legs, starting at 10:00 hours, ( at 8:30 starts the checks, also on Avenida de San Nicolás.)

Saturday 5 August, Agüimes

Actividades de Dinamizacion 

Playa de Arinaga will host the first Saturday of August a day of leisure for the whole family. On Avenida Polizón de Playa de Arinaga.

On Saturday, between 11:00 and 14:00 hours, many leisure activities like workshops, crafts, games, children’s animation and bouncy castle among others.


Saturday 5 August, San Lorenzo, Las Palmas 

Fiestas de San Lorenzo 2017

On Saturday, Romeria, the Pilgrimage Offering to the patron of the neighbourhood San Lorenzo. Participating associations of neighbours of the District San Lorenzo Tamaraceite and various folklore groups. The route of the entourage will be from Calle Hermanos Álvarez to the church square.

( Fuegos de San Lorenzo ; The famous fireworks will happen on Wednesday and Thursday night  (9-10 August ). At 01:00 the sky will be illuminated by the colourful firework spectacle)

Sunday 6 August, Puerto Rio, Mogán

Puerto Rico Farmers ad Craft market 

The bi-weekly Farmers’ market is in Puerto Rico’s urban park this weekend. A  chance to take a stroll around the market stalls and see what a varied range of products there are on offer.
