The hot weather this week looks set to continue in to the weekend, and there are lots of events and festivities around the island to go and see over the next few days including a Wine night in Santa Lucia, the main patron saint’s festivities in Motor Grande/Puerto Rico (Mogán), one in Arucas as well as in El Tablero and in the tiny little dirt road enclave of Salinas de Matorral at the most northerly coastal point in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. A latin music weekend is also planned, a big second hand rental-car sale, a night at the Castillo de Mata museum in Las Palmas as well as a “bio and sustainable produce” fair at the Cabildo’s agricultural development farm in Arucas.
Next week all the islanders start celebrations for the ‘Día de Canarias’ which is on Tuesday 30th of May. This also puts a lot of the planned events for the weekend on the Monday. Tuesday the 30th will also be a bank holiday throughout the Canary Islands.
La Noche de Vinos y Enquesques
A third edition of the Night of Wines and Cakes held in the Museo La Zafra (Harvest Museum) on Friday with more than a dozen island wineries, 5 local restaurants/bars, pastry shops and live music. Starting from 20:00 until midnight and offering the opportunity to visit the La Zafra Museum, which keeps its doors open for free throughout the event.
A chance to enjoy various wines for the price of 1 or 2 euros a glass as well as food stalls.
The island bodegas participating will include well known and traditional winemakers Mayor Monzón, Mogarén, Beliandra, Ventura, Lava, Hinojo, Aya, La Higuera Mayor, La Montaña, Finca El Troncón and Mondalón who will all be present at this third edition, which also includes foods from the restaurants Humus, Hatuauey, La Era, El Pequeño Bodegón, La Abuela Canaria among others. Las Salinas de Tenefé will also be present to offer the public a range of natural sea salts that are produced here on the coast of the municipality.
Traditional fiestas in honour of María Auxiliadora (Mary the Helper)
Friday 19 May : starting at 19:00 performances from the local school of dance and at 21:00 traditional Taifa dancing at the Motor Grande Plaza.
Saturday 20 May: IX Romeria, the pilgrimage offering in honour of Maria Auxiliadora starting at 19:00 followed by a party with concerts and fireworks at midnight. A great time to see everyone dressed up in traditional Canarian clothing, and well worth joining in yourself. Romerias will cause some traffic restriction on the main artery in Puerto Rico.
Sunday 21 May : II Fiesta del Agua, the second annual water party starts from 13:00 with DJ’s and in the evening from 21:00 a concert with a very popular music group ‘Ultima Llave

Fiestas de El Tablero 2017 en honor a la Santísima Trinidad
El Tablero, the lovely local community, located just over the other side of the main GC-1 highway from Maspalomas and Sonnenland has been celebrating their patron saint festivities in honour of la Santísima Trinidad, the holy trinity. See the full program (in Spanish) here.
On Friday at the Plaza there will be a night of taifas. (traditional dancing) from 21:00
On Saturday a foam party from 11:00-12:30 at Plaza de El Tablero (just in front of the church). At 12:00 the ‘Bajada de la Rama’ (lowering the branch) procession starts from the school I.E.S Talbero to the Plaza. At 17:00 the third edition of ‘Encuentro de Mascotas’ (Pets’ meeting) is organised by the local veterinarian, including an exhibition of local dog breeds. At 21:00 a concert from Christina Ramos, a local girl who won the ‘Spain’s got talent’ televised competition last year with her mix of opera and rock, and the party continues with music, DJ’s only interrupted at midnight with fireworks.
Sunday 21 May, traditional religious mass – procession from 11:00 followed at 14:00, the traditional paella enlivened with music from Paco Guedes. The festivities will come to a close with a gala starting at 21:00 bringing together music and humour from local television personalities Yanely and Matías (in Spanish)
Feria La Latina
Weekend La Latina family fair over the weekend at Edificio Miller – Parque Santa Catalina with a Latin Music Festival. Gastronomy and cultural offerings from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru and Venezuela, with clothes and crafts for sale, dance classes and plenty of live music.

La Feria Avis Canarias
The car-rental company Avis is holding their big annual sale again of ex rental cars throughout the weekend in the Gran Canaria stadium parking lot.
The fair is held simultaneously in Tenerife and Gran Canaria and will be open on Friday starting from 12:00, on Saturday 10:00-19:00 and on Sunday 10:00-15:00. With more than 600 cars on offer, brands like Volkswagen, Audi, Citroën, Hyundai and Honda. All cars come with a one year warranty and will be reviewed by official dealers, prices starting from 3,990 euros.
Even if you are not buying right now its a good opportunity to see whats on offer and compare prices. This is the 10th edition of their carefully driven ex-rental cars.
Fiestas patronales San Isidro Labrador y Santa Maria de la Cabeza
The main feast of patronal festivities of this northern town will be celebrated on Sunday with the solemn celebration of the Eucharist in the Montaña Cardones Church at 11:30 followed by a procession with images of saints.
A lovely way to get to know more about the island is to experience local traditional festivities such as these.
Feria De Ecologia Y Sostenibilidad
Ecology & Sustainability Fair on Saturday from 09:00-16:00 in the Experimental Agricultural farm, run by the island’s governing Cabildo, located in the north, Arucas.
The opportunity to enjoy a multitude of activities related to sustainable fashion, recycling, organic farming, maternity, complementary therapies … and much more. And of course Fair Trade items.

Noche de los Museos
Museo Castillo de Mata is having a museum night on Saturday. At 21:00, 22:00 and 23:00 theatrical live performances reproducing the moment when the fortress undergoes the attack of the Dutch fleet during the summer of 1599, when several thousand raiders, commanded by Pieter van der Does, took the city. The re-enactments start next to the Alonso Alvarado monument.
Also in the program is a quick painting competition by five artist as well as live percussion music from the per-Qt Duo.
Fiestas de La Sal, Romeria y Alfombra de Sal
The feast of the Salt. This tiny coastal community La Salinas del Matorral, located just after Castillo de Romeral are celebrating their romeria on Saturday. The Pilgrimage offering starts at 18:00 after mass by the seashore out in the open.
Rastro, secondhand market and farmers’ market
The Sunday must for all previously-owned-item lovers. The second hand rastro market, where you’ll find brick-a-brack and so much more. This Sunday joined by the local farmers market, as it is every second weekend.
