The new race was presented in a ceremony presided over by the Minister of sports of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Angel Victor Torres, the Mayor of Mogán, Onalia Bueno, and President of the Challenge Family, Felix Walchshöfer, son of the founder of this international sporting event series.
The date of the Challenge Mogán event favors the presence of the European elite who practice this sport on the island as they prepare for the World Championships, which take place three weeks later in Hawaii. More than 700 participants are expected in the first edition to reach 1,500 by the third year. More than half of the athletes will be from Europe with representation from more than 20 different nationalities, mainly British and German.
The race, open to all, is to be held in the municipality on the southwest of the island and comprises 1.9 kilometres of swimming, 90 km cycling and 21 km running. In addition, separate events are included exclusively for women and for children. Amadores beach will host the Triathlon, and is the location of the swimming section. The cycle and run routes will be extended throughout the spectacular coastline and mountain areas of Mogán.
