San Agustín beach will once again play host to the Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival at the end of July, in a three day event marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the legendary singer and performance artist Rufus Thomas, whose images graces the poster.
Confirmed artists will also include the legend´s two daughters Vaneese and Carla, each of them well known and respected in their own rights as outstanding performers, who will participate in the tribute to their fathers legacy. They will be joined by whole host of incomparably authentic soul music performers transported from the USA, via the Poretta Soul Festival in Italy, including the stellar talent’s of the Anthony Paule Soul Orchestra, Vasti Jackson (in tribute to Johnnie Taylor), Scott Sharrard, Willie Walker, Barbara Blue and Falisa Janaye, Earl Thomas, Banadú, Baton Rouge Dixieland , and DJs Jaime Falcón and Sergio Palmer. And of course compered by they laid back Liverpudlian dude of cool Rick Hutton.
Dania Dévora, director of the festival and promoters DD & Company Productions, joined the local mayor to exclaim how “surprising” it was “to return to the beach of soul, the beach of the soul: San Agustín”. The soul festival is utterly unique in Spain and showcases live acts including swing, soul, funk and rhythm and blues performed by the whole international scene, said Dania Dévora.
The 2017 edition shares its poster theme with the Porretta Soul Festival which this year commemorates 30 years at the Italian town, bringing the most talented and authentic live performers direct from the USA every year, now for the third year in a row stopping off on the golden sands of Gran Canaria to play their final European gigs before heading back across the Atlantic.
San Agustín beach is a natural, sunny setting which attracts greater numbers of attendees every year, with tens of thousands arriving down to the seashore to enjoy the sounds with soul in Maspalomas over two nights of free concerts, with morning workshops and DJ sessions, and all totally free of charge.
The event, which is organised by DD & Company Producciones and sponsored by Porretta Soul Festival, has the support of the Town Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which helps to promote and sponsors the infrastructure of the event. It is the only one of its kind in Spain.
This outstanding festival event is utterly unmissable for any fan of 20th century music and has already established itself as a quality event aimed at residents on the island, but also now attracts thousands of visitors who, spend their vacations on the South of Gran Canaria. The programming, suitable for adults and children, is aimed at pleasing a broad demographic and a demanding public.
