British sci-fi, satire series “Black Mirror” will be filming in the beautiful village of Tejeda, Gran Canaria, this coming Sunday and Monday (22-23 May) for an episode in which about 60 extras have been hired.
The production company “Great Babieka SL” plans to create “a traditional market in a mountain village”. Among the actors expected to be visiting are Jessica Brown, Hayley Atwell, Oona Chaplin, Daniel Kaluuya and Jon Hamm.
The series broadcast on the UK’s Channel 4 and on Netflix (Cuatro and TNT in Spain) revolves around how technology affects our lives, sometimes bringing out the worst in us.
Writer Charlie Brooker has said, that “each episode has a different cast, a different setting, even a different reality. But they’re all about the way we live now – and the way we might be living in 10 minutes’ time if we’re clumsy”
Brooker explained the series’ title to The Guardian, noting: “If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the side effects? This area – between delight and discomfort – is where Black Mirror, my new drama series, is set. The ‘black mirror’ of the title is the one you’ll find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone.”
Production sponsors, Endemol, said in a press release that the series is “a hybrid of The Twilight Zone and Tales of the Unexpected which taps into our contemporary unease about our modern world”, with the stories having a “techno-paranoia” feel.
Channel 4 described the first episode as “a twisted parable for the Twitter age”.
The news comes just as Tejeda has been named as one of the most beautiful villages in the world.
Viewers may have seen, or heard of, the very first 2011 episode, in which a British prime minister was made to have intercourse with a pig on live national television, as part of a ransom demand following the kidnapping of a princess. Charlie Brooker has denied any previous knowledge of the PigGate scandal which involved real Prime Minister David Cameron last year…
