The Canary Guide Día de Canarias #WeekendTips 26-28 May 2023

What an interesting last weekend of May ahead. Weather predictions are showing some rain showers are likely across Gran Canaria. This extended #WeekendTips covers up to Tuesday, when all things Canarian are celebrated on the Día de Canarias. There’ll be some gorgeous Patron Saints’ festivities happening in San Fernando de Maspalomas as well as in Valleseco.

Fun Fact:
Valleseco literally means “dry valley” in Spanish, but is actually one of the wettest municipalities Gran Canaria. Nestling between the famous fresh water sources of Firgas & Teror, half way up the island’s mountainous northern slopes, this area is well known for its apple growers, cider and its weekly market

Six weeks since the unexplained disappearance of Anna-Karin on Gran Canaria

The authorities on Gran Canaria have been engaged in a rigorous search for Swedish tourist Anna-Karin Bengtsson, who went missing in the south of Gran Canaria around April 9. Her unexplained disappearance has caused her family much distress, with no clues to her whereabouts having emerged in the six weeks since they first realised her phone was no longer functioning.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 26-28 August 2022

It’s the last weekend of August (already!) and the end of the traditional holiday month, which will mean a slow down in some of the summer season tourism traffic, to the enclaves of the south, as local preparations get underway for a new school year to start. Summer weather, as ever, continues on Gran Canaria, with lovely warm daytime temperatures predicted this weekend pretty much around the whole island, with some possibility of a little cloud cover in the capital and in the rugged north, though of course for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria the blue skies are only just getting going as they start to enjoy their later summer season.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 8-10 July 2022

A hot July weekend ahead full of summer festivities and events to enjoy. Top picks for this coming weekend include the Virgen del Carmen festivities, celebrating the patron protector of sailors and fisherfolk,  in Arguineguín (a Romería, pilgrimage offering, this Sunday), and in the neighbourhood La Isleta, up in the capital. The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 1-3 July 2022

Hello July and Hello Summer!
The summer months of July to September witness some of the most popular celebrations and the biggest traditional festivities and ‘romería’ pilgrimage offerings, on Gran Canaria.
In July, we have the Virgen del Carmen festivities in multiple locations, patron saint festivities in the name of Santiago Apóstol in Gáldar and San Bartolomé de Tirajana (This is also the Holy Year of ‘the Way of St. James’ on Gran Canaria ) and then there’s the Maspalomas Soul Festival towards the end of the month.
La Rama is in Agaete during August. The Fiestas del Pino, for the patron saint of Gran Canaria and the Fiesta del Charco, in La Aldea, in September, just to name a few of the biggest. Not forgetting all the other music festivals and concerts, bringing some most famous artists to the island including March Anthony and Pet Shop Boys.

This weekend will see history being made as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria celebrates its Carnival festivities in the summer season, for the first time. It’s the main Fataga Apricot festivalv weekend, just 20 minutes from the beaches of Maspalomas; experience a traditional Farmers’ Feast in San Mateo, as well as commercial street fair in the town of Ingenio, together with their Patron Saint San Pedro’s festivities coming to an end at the same time. Don’t forget to check The Canary Guide calendar for other events and festivities.

Upcoming local bank holidays: Saturday 16 July, Mogán- Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen.Monday 25 July,   Gáldar and San Bartolomé de Tirajana – patron saint festivities in honour of Santiago Apóstol, Saint James the ApostleTuesday 26 July, Gáldar – Festivities Santa Ana

Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend of warm weather and sunshine and some possible morning clouds in the southern resorts of Mogán and Maspalomas. With a UV index of around 11 and temperatures in the shade staying around the upper 20s, sea breezes from the south will put next week in to the low 30s and climbing.
It is good to remember that the weather can occasionally be quite changeable, and hard to predict, even just a short distance inland from the usually sunnier coastal weather on the south, other things can happen.

Throughout the weekend in the south, day time should have clear skies, according to the weather forecast, and the north of the island will experience more prominent cloud cover, and the possibility of rain.

The volcanic crater of Caldera de Tejeda watches over this area, which exists within the municipalities of Artenara, Tejeda, Agaete and Galdar.

The Canary Guide ‘Día de Canarias’ #WeekendTips 27-30 May 2022

It’s the last weekend of May and also a festive ‘puente’ long weekend. The busiest this year so far, and the summer season festivities have truly started.
The next few days are filled with a multitude of institutional and cultural celebrations with many other events and festivities besides. There is the ‘Tuna and Sea Fair’ in Arguineguín and the ‘Patronal festivities in San Fernando de Maspalomas’, including a “Romería” pilgrimage offering as well as popular Carnival main festivities in Carrizal.
Many different traditional cultural events around the island include The Wool Fiesta in Caideros de Gáldar and the Cattle Fair at the Cabildo’s experimental farm in Arucas. Where ever you might find yourself, most likely, there will be festivities throughout this “bridge” weekend of celebration as most of the island takes a four day holiday to welcome in the summer.
Monday, 30th May is ‘Diá de Canarias‘, Canary Islands Day, which is a bank holiday throughout the archipelago. It’s good to remember that government offices, banks, and many local shops etc. will be closed.

On the 30th of May 1983 The Canary Islands officially became an Autonomous National Region of Spain when The Government of The Canary Islands Parliament sat for the first time.  The day has been marked ever since by all municipal town halls, on all the 8 islands, in each of the two provinces that make up the archipelago, as the official day of celebration of all things Canarian.
You can expect nearly every town or village to have some sort of public event happening, either during the weekend and/or Monday, with locals dressed in traditional post-conquest clothing and performing folk dances as well as tastings of local produce among other attractions.
Of course, as tourism has long been the main focus of the economy here you’ll also find representations of traditional foodstuffs like gofio, potatoes, cheeses, mangoes, avocados, ropa vieja, almonds, wines, rum, honey rum, mojos rojo and verde and many items besides on display in hotels and tourist information centres.
This is truly a weekend of holiday, family, and celebration. Here we list just the tip of the iceberg, with a taste of the options for events that will be taking place and also to celebrate this Canaries Day during the weekend and especially on Monday, 30 May.

Gran Canaria Weather: Some grey skies, clearing into the weekend, but a little rain expected by Día de Canarias on Monday

The Canary Guide Weekend & Yule Tips 20-24 December 2019

From sunny Gran Canaria we wish you all Feliz navidad! Happy holidays! Merry Yuletime!
The last weekend before celebrations on the 24th and 25th and it looks like it is going to be wonderful. This week we extend our normal Weekend Tips to cover events all the way to christmas eve. There are loads of wonderful seasonal goings on all around Gran Canaria. You may also see the island’s now traditional cheery motorcycle gang dressed in seasonal costumes cruising all around and dispensing smiles and joy throughout the weekend.
Welcome to the season of bearded strangers, with gifts, from some far off land, entering your home in the dark… It is the last weekend before most foreign residents celebrate their Yuletime dinners and get togethers. Of course here in Spain, and on the Canary Islands, December 25th is a day of quiet contemplation, though more and more Northern European and American traditions are making their way into the collective consciousness, with Santa becoming an ever larger cultural figure, the main gift giving days are traditionally January 5th & 6th in celebration of the Dia de Los Tres Reyes, Day of the Three Kings, 12th night, the epiphany.

The Canary Guide events : Vintage cars in Teror

The beautiful mountain town of Teror will host a “classic” event with their very first Grand Villa de Teror Vintage car contest on Saturday 30 June.
Plaza de Nuestra Señora Del Pino and Calle Real will feature 40 “vintage” cars between 10:30 to 14:00 in an event organized by the Canarian Classic Car Club, with the collaboration of the local council of Teror enlivened by a concert by swing band Brave Missy & The Cavaliers, starting at 11:oo in the morning.
Considered a social, cultural and tourism event, the main requirement for contest participants is that the vehicles were manufactured before December 31, 1939. In the same way, both the driver and the rest of the occupants of the cars must be dressed according to the time of manufacture of the cars, this will be primarily the 20s and 30s.
The ‘Canarian Classic Car Club’ has selected the town of Teror for its beauty and its historic-cultural characteristics. In addition, the town council has identified the opportunity to offer its residents a unique exhibition on Gran Canaria while generating a new tourist attraction for the municipality, which may become part of the annual calendar of events in the town.
The main incentive to carry out this contest, according to members of the Club’s board is to avoid losing the taste for the romance of old cars. “This is part of the history of the Canary Islands, we have to rescue and take care of our heritage,” they say.
The route to Teror
All vehicles will arrive in Teror after completing a driving route through the mountains that starts from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and will take them first to Arucas. There they will open the “XIX Ascent of Arucas” (GC 330), a test organised by Escudería Aterura. After the “old” cars, the starting signal will be given to the competition vehicles.
From Arucas, the vehicles will follow the GC-21 to the “Villa Mariana”, where they will be exhibited from 11:00 in the Plaza del Pino and C/Real. At 13:30  and at the end of the exhibition, residents, supporters and visitors to the town can see these jewels on wheels circulating through the old town, which they will close to recreate and move all attendees into the spirit of the 1920s and 30s.
Time to dust off your pearls, flapper dress, trilby’s and spats!!
