Foundation Investigated for Alleged Mismanagement of Public Funds Meant for Care of Unaccompanied Migrant Minors
Jun, 2023 |
The 7th Investigative Court of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has opened a preliminary investigation into the Social Response Foundation Siglo XXI and four of its directors. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in Las Palmas filed a complaint against them, alleging crimes that could include forgery of commercial documents, mismanagement, and embezzlement of public funds. The investigation aims to determine whether this nonprofit organisation, and its officials, could have misused public funds intended for the care of unaccompanied migrant minors, during the migration crisis of 2020 that was precipitated by the pandemic confinement on the islands, leading to a build up of arrivals having to be assessed and cared for by the Canary Islands Regional Government, using hotels left empty due to the lack of tourism. The estimated amount involved in the alleged misuse stands at around €12.5 million between 2020 and 2022 on Gran Canaria alone.

Vox Enters Canarian Politics, Stage Right: Anti-Migrant, Anti-Feminist, Anti-Green, Anti-Autonomy, Anti-LGBT, Anti-Multiculturalism, Pro-Franco politics find a foothold on The Canary Islands
May, 2023 |
The Canary Islands were unable to avoid the rise of the far right on Sunday, unlike in 2019, writes Natalia G. Vargas in Canarias Ahora. Vox, which previously had no representation on the islands, managed to make its presence felt in several municipalities and councils this May 28. They also secured seats in the Canary Islands’ regional parliament, securing four deputies. “Defending what is ours, our own, and fighting against insecurity” were the slogans that underpinned Vox’s campaign in The Canary Islands, along with “family, employment, and freedom.” This rhetoric, coupled with an electoral program that was repeated across all local elections in Spain, proved sufficient. Dozens of cities and towns on the islands welcomed their first far right candidates of the modern democratic era into Canarian politics, with urban areas serving as their main strongholds.
La Alcaldesa Bueno Secures Incredible Majority in Mogán

Mogán, May 29, 2023 – The often controversial incumbent, O Bueno, La Alcaldesa, has achieved an unprecedented and resounding victory once more in Mogán. The candidate who switched her party’s name, for these elections, to “Juntos por Mogán”, a local ally of the regionalist conservatives “Coalición Canaria” (CC), will once again assume the role of mayor. The Canary Guide #WeekendTips San Juan 23-26 June 2022
Jun, 2022 | Events & Leisure, Fairs & Markets, Weekend Tips
Summer has officially begun with the June solstice on Tuesday and now the foundational San Juan festivities are upon us, celebrating 544 years since the Castillian army first set camp on the banks of the Guineguada fresh water stream, in what is now the old quarter of our capital city, Vegueta! It is a long “puente” weekend with one of the biggest and most magical celebrations on Gran Canaria, and throughout Spain, entailing many traditional fiestas, midnight dips in the sea and various rituals with smoke, bonfires and fireworks.
Every municipality and neighbourhood is likely to have their own official bonfire event, and there are strict rules to be followed, particularly at this time of year when we are ever-watchful for the dangers to our island from wildfires, so in case you are planning your own event, always check with your local town hall about specific rules and regulations.
This weekend offers so much beside San Juan, including Patron Saint festivities and “Romeria” pilgrimage offerings. There is also a Harvest Fair in El Tablero, a 90’s music festival in the Barranco del Aguila, a Romantic night in Tejeda and much more!
“Remember that San Juan festivities also mean fireworks, so make sure your pets are safe inside and secure as they can be easily scared and try to escape any perceived danger. Keep an eye out for any animals panicking outdoors”
Upcoming bank holidays:This Friday, 24 June is a local Bank holiday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, Arucas, La Aldea de San Nicolás, Teror.Foundational festivities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, festivities in honour of San Juan Bautista in Telde, Arucas and La Aldea and Festividad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Teror.
Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast changeable weather as the weekend gets going. San Juan festivities on Thursday should stay reasonable when it comes to the southern resort areas of Mogán and Maspalomas, temperatures remaining around the mid 20s in the shade, a touch cooler on the north of the island, with some potential for rain in the outlook, more likely in the capital, in the mountains and along Gran Canaria’s rugged north coasts. For the rest of the weekend… well, we will just need to wait and see.
It is good to remember that the weather at this time of year can be quite changeable, and hard to predict, even just a short distance inland from the usually much sunnier coastal weather on the south.
San Juan festivities on Gran Canaria most probably will be enjoyed in good weather but the weekend forecast looks grey around the island still and at the moment even possibility of rain all around. All in all average daytime temperatures should stay comfortable above 22ºC in the shade, though certainly a touch colder up in the summits. Not the best forecast as the summer 2022 has truly arrived…

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 17-19 June 2022
Jun, 2022 | Carnival, Tourism, Weekend Tips
It is the weekend before the midsummer San Juan Festivities, one of the biggest celebrations on Gran Canaria, and with summer solstice one of the oldest with spring officially becoming summer. This year San Juan lands on a Friday, and together with the eve of San Juan, both days will put ancient traditions on show, and there will be a lot of festivities and events to see and experience. The next Canary Guide #WeekendTips will be out in time to highlight some of these cultural traditions celebrated en masse on Gran Canaria.
This weekend is pretty full of worthy must-see seasonal events. For the first time ever (to our knowledge) Maspalomas Carnival is being held in June, with this main weekend of celebration including “The Day of the tourist”, and the rescue of the Sardine on Friday, from Maspalomas Lighthouse to Playa del Inglés beach, then later an “international” show at the Yumbo, you can expect thousands of people for the parade on Saturday and then the “Sardine’s funeral and cremation” with the “last will and testament” with fireworks on Sunday will mark the end of this hotter than usual Carnival affair in the south.
There will be another edition of the Km.0 Fair Gran Canaria, also happening this weekend, in Arucas along with their Patronal Saint festivities, San Juan is big on this island and no mistake; making it the perfect time to visit this beautiful town and not forgetting their traditional Corpus Christi religious ceremony, with handmade street carpets of coloured salt on Sunday. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria continues with their Foundational Festivities, culminating in one of the biggest celebrations in the city, next week, on the eve of San Juan at Las Canteras beach.
Upcoming bank holidays on Gran Canaria:Monday, 20 June is a local Bank holiday in Moya – Festivities of San Antonio de Padua ( St. Anthony).Friday, 24 June is a local Bank holiday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, Arucas, La Aldea de San Nicolás, TerorFoundational festivities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, festivities in honour of San Juan Bautista in Telde, Arucas and La Aldea and Festividad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Teror

Weather Outlook
Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend starting with light breezes as well as sunshine throughout the coming days in the southern tourism heartlands of Mogán and Maspalomas. Average daytime temperatures will be a rather gorgeous 30ºC, in the shade, on the south, with the possibility of some calima haze, and perhaps some choppy seas with a yellow advisory waning in place for coastal phenomena. In direct sunlight, it is going to feel much hotter.
The weekend looks good around the island, so a great weekend for any adventure or event, whether it’s Carnival, Patron Saint festivities, or just having a walk in the mountains or a beach day. All in all average daytime temperature is looking around 25º-30ºC in the shade. A perfect weekend across Gran Canaria!

Throughout its nearly quarter of a century of existence, artists and groups recognised at a regional and national level have passed through it and it has evolved hand in hand with the musical tastes of the moment but maintaining its essence of making citizens aware of the heritage value of one of the main sites of the Canary Islands.”

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 15-17 April 2022
Apr, 2022 | Events & Leisure, Fairs & Markets, Weekend Tips
A long, hot “puente” weekend lies ahead on Gran Canaria, with Thursday and Friday both being Easter bank holidays (but not Monday). The southern beaches have already seen a huge influx of people arriving to enjoy some Easter feasting in sun. The weather forecast for the coming days is simply marvellous across Gran Canaria, though seas may be a little rougher than usual, temperatures are expected to rise to 30º Celsius, in the shade, on the south of the Island.
All around the island, particularly the larger towns and churches, there have been processions, where icons and statues are carried through the streets, and which will continue until Sunday. The biggest, and most popular ones take place in the capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as well as other religious enclaves such as Teror, Agüimes and Gáldar. This weekend you can also enjoy a lively Spring market in Playa de Arinaga as well as weekly markets galore.
Did you know !The Canarian “Sancocho” is one of the most popular dishes in the islands’ culinary repertoire, and it is a tradition to eat it on Good Friday. Normally made with salted fish (cherne, corvina, pompanos or grunt), potatoes and sweet potatoes; it is accompanied with the infamous Canarian Mojo sauce (red or green) and Pella de Gofio (a mixture made basically with gofio, water and salt. The final result, baked in this perfectly compact and solid mortar, producing a soft, salted fish dish, and served as a complement to various staples of the traditional Canarian diet).
Upcoming events:21-24 April, Fiestas Santa Águeda22 April -1 May, International Film Festival Las Palmas de Gran Canaria24 April, Cheese Festival Santa Maria de Guía29-30 April, Spring Festival Vecindario29 April -1 May, Gran Canaria Me Gusta-fair, INFECAR Las Palmas de Gran Canaria6-8 May, LPA Motown
Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend of sunshine across the south of the island and in resort areas of Mogán and Maspalomas, with temperatures climbing to over 30ºC, in the shade. It’s beginning to feel a lot like summer!
This Easter weekend looks absolutely fabulous all around the island, with perhaps an occasional cloud from the north, but all in all a great weekend for any activity, or just staying still, and chilling by the pool or on the beaches, along with large numbers of native Canarians heading south for some down time. Whether it’s the beach, mountains, gardening, hiking or just enjoying days in the shade, conditions look superb for all.
Average daytime temperatures are expected to stay pretty close, on both sides, to 30º C depending on if you are closer to the summits or the ocean. It is always much hotter in direct sunlight, so get plenty of protection on, the UV index is set to climb to 10 or more.
Weather at this time of year can be quite changeable, and hard to predict, though from here on in we mostly expect warm winds and sunshine as temperatures continue to rise, however even just a short distance inland from the usually much sunnier coastal weather on the south, temperatures can drop, especially as you move towards the evening.

The Canary Guide Weekend Tips 1-3 April 2022
Mar, 2022 | Events & Leisure, Fairs & Markets, Weekend Tips
April begins with a few clouds and an occasional shower, but there are a few big fairs happening around the island this weekend, a great chance to really start to celebrate the Spring as we relentlessly move towards the Easter holidays. The island is enjoying some beautiful greenery due to the long-needed rainfalls over the past weeks, and Springtime blooms pepper the mountainsides. Sunday’s weather forecast and the start of the new week warn of a possibility of further rains, especially in the north and mountainous areas, so be wary of adverse weather possibly causing cancellations or postponements of outdoor events. Tejeda and La Aldea enjoy their monthly markets on Saturday, with Tejeda is celebrating in Carnival style. Two big fairs in the north of Gran Canaria return with ENORTE in Gáldar and The Institutional Fair of the Canary Islands Products of the Land this weekend in San Mateo. Anfi Beach to the south will be busy on both Saturday and Sunday with big sporting events planned.
Upcoming bank holidays:
Thursday, 14 April Public holiday in The Canary Islands/Spain – Holy Thursday, Jueves Santo.
Friday, 15 April Public holiday in Spain – Good Friday, Viernes Santo.
Upcoming events:
21-24 April Fiestas Santa Águeda, El Pajar
29.4-1.5 ‘Gran Canaria Me Gusta’ Fair, INFECAR Las Palmas
Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend starting with light breezes and some cloud cover possible, even in the southern municipality of Mogán. Sunday may see the return of some of those April showers as the new week gets started.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday look pretty good all around the island, so great days for any adventure. So far, the weather forecast is for rain for Sunday, in many places around the island, so good to be prepared for that possibility. All in all average daytime temperatures should stay springlike with average of 21ºC in the shade, though certainly a touch colder up in the summits, and much hotter in direct sunlight on the coasts. Rain showers are predicted to start this first week of April 2022.
Weather at this time of year can be quite changeable, and hard to predict, even just a short distance inland from the usually much sunnier coastal weather on the south.
*** Check the regular markets and a range of other events on our main calendar at The Canary Guide website***
