Foundation Investigated for Alleged Mismanagement of Public Funds Meant for Care of Unaccompanied Migrant Minors

The 7th Investigative Court of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has opened a preliminary investigation into the Social Response Foundation Siglo XXI and four of its directors. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in Las Palmas filed a complaint against them, alleging crimes that could include forgery of commercial documents, mismanagement, and embezzlement of public funds. The investigation aims to determine whether this nonprofit organisation, and its officials, could have misused public funds intended for the care of unaccompanied migrant minors, during the migration crisis of 2020 that was precipitated by the pandemic confinement on the islands, leading to a build up of arrivals having to be assessed and cared for by the Canary Islands Regional Government, using hotels left empty due to the lack of tourism. The estimated amount involved in the alleged misuse stands at around €12.5 million between 2020 and 2022 on Gran Canaria alone.

Vox Enters Canarian Politics, Stage Right: Anti-Migrant, Anti-Feminist, Anti-Green, Anti-Autonomy, Anti-LGBT, Anti-Multiculturalism, Pro-Franco politics find a foothold on The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands were unable to avoid the rise of the far right on Sunday, unlike in 2019, writes Natalia G. Vargas in Canarias Ahora. Vox, which previously had no representation on the islands, managed to make its presence felt in several municipalities and councils this May 28. They also secured seats in the Canary Islands’ regional parliament, securing four deputies. “Defending what is ours, our own, and fighting against insecurity” were the slogans that underpinned Vox’s campaign in The Canary Islands, along with “family, employment, and freedom.” This rhetoric, coupled with an electoral program that was repeated across all local elections in Spain, proved sufficient. Dozens of cities and towns on the islands welcomed their first far right candidates of the modern democratic era into Canarian politics, with urban areas serving as their main strongholds.

The Canary Guide Weekend Tips 1-3 April 2022

April begins with a few clouds and an occasional shower, but there are a few big fairs happening around the island this weekend, a great chance to really start to celebrate the Spring as we relentlessly move towards the Easter holidays. The island is enjoying some beautiful greenery due to the long-needed rainfalls over the past weeks, and Springtime blooms pepper the mountainsides.  Sunday’s weather forecast and the start of the new week warn of a possibility of further rains, especially in the north and mountainous areas, so be wary of adverse weather possibly causing cancellations or postponements of outdoor events. Tejeda and La Aldea enjoy their monthly markets on Saturday, with Tejeda is celebrating in Carnival style. Two big fairs in the north of Gran Canaria return with ENORTE in Gáldar and The Institutional Fair of the Canary Islands Products of the Land this weekend in San Mateo. Anfi Beach to the south will be busy on both Saturday and Sunday with big sporting events planned.
Upcoming bank holidays:
Thursday, 14 April  Public holiday in The Canary Islands/Spain – Holy Thursday, Jueves Santo.
Friday, 15 April Public holiday in Spain – Good Friday, Viernes Santo.
Upcoming events:
21-24 April Fiestas Santa Águeda, El Pajar
29.4-1.5 ‘Gran Canaria Me Gusta’ Fair, INFECAR Las Palmas

Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend starting with light breezes and some cloud cover possible, even in the southern municipality of Mogán. Sunday may see the return of some of those April showers as the new week gets started.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday look pretty good all around the island, so great days for any adventure. So far, the weather forecast is for rain for Sunday, in many places around the island, so good to be prepared for that possibility.  All in all average daytime temperatures should stay springlike with average of 21ºC in the shade, though certainly a touch colder up in the summits, and much hotter in direct sunlight on the coasts. Rain showers are predicted to start this first week of April 2022.
Weather at this time of year can be quite changeable, and hard to predict, even just a short distance inland from the usually much sunnier coastal weather on the south.

The Canary Guide – Star Event: The II Romantic Night Tejeda

On a night for lovers and for romance under the stars ‘The Most Beautiful Kiss in The World’ will be just one of the many highlights of the II Romantic Night (Noche Romántica) to be hosted in one of Gran Canaria’s most picturesque little mountain villages, Tejeda in concert with 350 other “Beautiful Villages” around Europe. The Association for the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain has chosen Gran Canaria for the national presentation by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, for a Romantic Night under the stars, to be held on June 23, midsummer’s eve, at a synchronised summit of 350 villages from around Spain, Italy, France and Belgium all recognised for their outstanding beauty.
Last year more than 1,500 people visited Tejeda, the only Canary Islands town that is a member of this prestigious club,  to celebrate the summer solstice with ‘The Most Beautiful Kiss in the World’, a central act of this initiative that managed to unite ore than 100,000 “lovers” throughout Europe in a simultaneous kiss.
The Romantic Night program includes the turning off of public lighting throughout the town, which will allow visitors to contemplate the sky in a unique way and promote Tejeda as a key location on Gran Canaria, as an official Starlight Tourist Destination, from which to observe the stars.
The Tourist Information Offices of Tejeda received more than 25,800 tourists during 2017 attracted by the beauty of spectacular landscapes that put have Gran Canaria on the international map, and from whose summits, with Roque Nublo as the island’s iconic symbol, the island has grown in recognition throughout the world.
Tejeda
Aiming to attract visitors who are on holiday to participate in the event and to discover the interior of the island, the Tourist Offices located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Mogán and in the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will have posters and brochures about the Romantic Night prepared in three languages, Spanish, English and German.
Romantic Night Tejeda is to be accompanied by a schedule of activities that will begin on midsummer’s eve at 18.00 with a performance by the Malagan singer ‘La Pili’ who will tour the streets of the municipality. The music will continue in the hands of Adriana Medina on guitar and Thania Cantallops with cello, who will offer their wide repertoire of boleros from 18:30 to 20:30.
The ‘Mezcolanza’ of ‘Timple & Bohemia’ show will start at 21.30, with a cast of musicians of recognised prestige in their various musical disciplines who for this event mix their talents with the renowned voices of Abelardo García ‘El Tormento’, Patricia Muñoz, Pedro Manuel Afonso, Yoana García and Moneiba García.
The special moment will arrive at 23.00 the the “lights off” will allow attendees the rare opportunity to contemplate the starry sky of Tejeda in all its splendour and create a perfect atmosphere in which to celebrate the ‘Most Beautiful Kiss in the World’. Thousands of people in Spain, France, Italy and Belgium will all show their affection together illuminated by the stars, by the warmth of candles, lanterns and small lights that will be placed along the streets of the town.
An astronomy workshop is also being offered by AstroEduca which will allow you to enjoy the Tejeda sky from a privileged location in the Plaza del Mirador del Ayuntamiento, where attendees can enjoy an experience linked to the Starlight project.
In the Plaza de Nuestra Senora del Socorro a chill out area will be installed where you can relax and enjoy the night with live music from the Quartet de Saxofones Travesía, which will perform a repertoire of jazz, well known soundtracks and Latin American music. In addition to this, Archi Sinsalabin and ‘Elian, the Illusionist’, will offer a magic show up close.
The night will end with ‘Viviendo. Tribute to Marc Anthony ‘, a selection of the best songs from the Puerto Rican singer played by Manolo Estupiñán, who will be accompanied by a band of twelve musicians.
Tejeda is the only town in the archipelago that is part of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain, which boasts 68 locations nationwide. The objective of the association is to highlight beautiful little municipalities, preferably rural, grouped under the same mark of quality, through promotional actions and cultural events inside and outside of Spain. This network encompasses places of great natural beauty with real personality as well as historical and cultural attractions, villas marked by tradition through which travellers can enjoy walking their paths and mingling with the locals.
The Most Beautiful Villages in Spain brand is a reference of prestige and quality nationally and internationally. The initiative is based on the French model Les Plus Beaux Villages and follows the path of the numerous networks that already operate in other countries around the world, such as Italy, Japan or Canada.
The Association was created in Spain in 2011 and was presented two years later with a network of 14 villages. Progressively, the list has been increasing to the 68 current locations.
