Foundation Investigated for Alleged Mismanagement of Public Funds Meant for Care of Unaccompanied Migrant Minors

The 7th Investigative Court of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has opened a preliminary investigation into the Social Response Foundation Siglo XXI and four of its directors. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in Las Palmas filed a complaint against them, alleging crimes that could include forgery of commercial documents, mismanagement, and embezzlement of public funds. The investigation aims to determine whether this nonprofit organisation, and its officials, could have misused public funds intended for the care of unaccompanied migrant minors, during the migration crisis of 2020 that was precipitated by the pandemic confinement on the islands, leading to a build up of arrivals having to be assessed and cared for by the Canary Islands Regional Government, using hotels left empty due to the lack of tourism. The estimated amount involved in the alleged misuse stands at around €12.5 million between 2020 and 2022 on Gran Canaria alone.

Vox Enters Canarian Politics, Stage Right: Anti-Migrant, Anti-Feminist, Anti-Green, Anti-Autonomy, Anti-LGBT, Anti-Multiculturalism, Pro-Franco politics find a foothold on The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands were unable to avoid the rise of the far right on Sunday, unlike in 2019, writes Natalia G. Vargas in Canarias Ahora. Vox, which previously had no representation on the islands, managed to make its presence felt in several municipalities and councils this May 28. They also secured seats in the Canary Islands’ regional parliament, securing four deputies. “Defending what is ours, our own, and fighting against insecurity” were the slogans that underpinned Vox’s campaign in The Canary Islands, along with “family, employment, and freedom.” This rhetoric, coupled with an electoral program that was repeated across all local elections in Spain, proved sufficient. Dozens of cities and towns on the islands welcomed their first far right candidates of the modern democratic era into Canarian politics, with urban areas serving as their main strongholds.

Siam Park Gran Canaria: Largest water park attraction in Europe edges ever closer to final approval, hoping to break ground this year

The San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Hall Governing Board, this Thursday, have announced their long awaited approval of the urbanisation project for the waste land area known as El Veril, between the GC1 north-south highway and the entry point to the southern resort areas of Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, where the construction of a new Siam Park Aqua Adventure attraction has been planned since at least 2013. This is a preliminary step to granting the final license to building the much anticipated tourist attraction, an initiative that has repeatedly stalled in the municipality over several years. The aim of the southern Town Council is, if everything moves in the right direction, for the works to break ground before the end of 2022.

The document, presented by the Consistory in a statement, initially approves three fundamental points. On the one hand, to agree on the establishment of the private execution framework for the urbanisable land at El Veril; second, a concerted management agreement and annexes, subjecting it to the public consultation process for one month; and, finally, the urbanisation project for the material execution of the planning determinations approved for said zone, which will be divided mainly into three plots: one for the park, another for a new hotel and a third in the municipal domain destined mainly for areas greenery and landscaping.
Councillor for Urban Planning, Samuel Henríquez declared the project to be “a strategic work for our tourist destination”
“One of the Department of Urban Planning’s objectives was to unblock [this project] and begin to take steps with the Siam Park, allowing us in four months to have been able to respond to the State hydraulic resource and today carry out this initial approval of the file”,  Henríquez added.
He continued “it is a strategic work for our tourist destination, as has been stated by both the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, because it represents a boost for the Playa del Inglés area, a boost for leisure and family tourism and will serve as a driving force for the rest of the investments and actions carried out in that area. Throughout these eight years there have been many missteps, but the public administration have to do our homework, which is about walking within the legalities to facilitate investments and generate legal guarantees for people who want to invest in San Bartolomé de Tirajana”.
“With the approval of this project we all win,” says the mayor, Concepción Narváez
The Town Planning councillor is confident that “before the summer we will be able to license the project and before the end of the year we could see the start of it, after more than eight years of paralysis, since the project reached the Town Council in the year 2015”. At the time the town hall was under the control of a previous administration, headed up by the PP/AV candidate Marco Aurelio Perez, whose governing group were suspected of obfuscation and sloth in the processing of the file, according to one of the several judges who have reviewed the case.
Current Mayor, Conchi Narváez concluded by saying “this step will give us a level of leisure offering that we need so much, at the heights of our Maspalomas Costa Canaria, a focus attraction for thousands of local, national and international visitors”.
Finally adding “the number of jobs that are going to be generated and the reactivation of the space where it is going to be developed is also positive. With the approval of this project we all win and I think it is a clear example of commitment by the current government group to employment and management”, within the municipality.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 25-27 March 2022

A little unstable weather is forecast for the weekend ahead. The Canary Islands Government has announced the suspension all the COVID-19 restrictions, it is going to feel a bit different than it has over the last 2 long years. Remember that preventive measures are still in place in some cases and masks are still in use indoors.
It’s Mother’s Day in UK this Sunday. Summer is a step closer with the spring forward of the clocks this Sunday as 1 AM becomes 2 AM. This will also mean sunrise and sunset will be about an hour later with more daylight to enjoy in the evenings.
Earth Hour is on this Saturday, 26 March between 20:30 -21:30. Many municipalities on Gran Canaria, including Agüimes, Teror, Las Palmas and many more, have also adopted this so no need to worry if some of the lights on large buildings are switched off for an hour this Saturday evening. This mainly happens in governmental buildings and on some streets. The annual Earth Hour lights-out event is held worldwide and the theme for this year’s campaign is “Re-think Plastics.
The symbolic turning off of lights for Earth Hour began in the city of Sydney in 2007. Since then, thousands of cities and towns around the world have joined this initiative, year after year, considered the largest environmental mobilisation campaign in history.
Overall a pretty great weekend ahead with sports, music and some carnival events taking place but it’s good to be aware that bad weather conditions can sometimes affect outdoor events taking place, particularly in case of heavy rain, which is expected as Storm Diego makes its way towards us.
Upcoming events:

TUI confirms high tourism expectations for the summer with longer stays and higher spending

The world’s largest tour operator, TUI Group, communicated on Thursday morning, to the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands. its strong commitment to the islands, confirming good expectations for the summer, with the arrival of tourists who will enjoy longer stays and spend more on vacations.

Regional Tourism Minister, Yaiza Castilla received the news, in a meeting held on Thursday morning, attended by the CFO of TUI Group, Sebastian Ebel; the CEO of Markets and Airlines, David Burling; and the director of Purchasing, Helen Caron, as well as the managing director of Tourism Board for the Canary Islands, Promotur, José Juan Lorenzo.

“The Canary Islands are a very reliable destination that has come out stronger, that has known how to do things well and that is better than before the pandemic,” explained Sebastian Ebel, who in fact announced that for the first time, this year, they will have more business in the summer than in winter on the islands.

The company’s finance director explained that they anticipate the summer season will bring 1.3 million tourists to the archipelago, the same number as before the pandemic, although with significant changes since these visitors will now on average extend their stay by at least one more day, going from 9.5 overnight stays to 10.5, and are spending 20% more on average on their vacations due to booking higher quality rooms. “The destination has been able to take advantage of these two years of tourist ups and downs to improve its facilities and its offer, and make higher-class establishments available to customers,” acknowledged Mister Ebel.
For Ebel, the work carried out by Turismo de Canarias has given rise to a destination that has all the necessary ingredients to be more successful than before the pandemic, even despite the war unleashed in Ukraine. “Although the war is turning out to be a nightmare, fortunately it is not having the expected impact on tourism as a whole, with the exception of countries like Poland or Finland, which are closer to the conflict,” he said.
TUI Group figures
TUI is the leading tourism group in Europe and one of the most important worldwide. It has a presence in more than 140 countries, has five airlines (TUI UK, TUI Netherlands, TUI Belgium, TUIfly (Germany) and TUI Nordic), 150 aircraft, three cruise ship companies with 16 ships, 1,600 travel agencies and a workforce made up of more 70,000 employees, of which a thousand are based in the Canary Islands, where the tour operator boasts 29 hotels.
The group has a greater presence in Germany and the United Kingdom, although it is also important in the Nordic countries and in central Europe.
With regard to the Canary Islands, in 2019, the pre-pandemic year, the five TUI airlines transported 2.5 million people to the Canary Islands from different European countries, which represented 14.2% of the total number of passengers arriving on the islands.
Regional councillor Yaiza Castilla meets with Chief Finance Officer of tourism giant, TUI, Sebastian Ebel, who announced that this summer season they plan to transport 1.3 million tourists to the archipelago, who will extend their stay, on average, by one more day and spend 20% more than before the pandemic

“TUI is fully aligned with our sustainability strategy, which is why we have created a working group to continue advancing together on this path with which we intend to increase the quality and not the quantity of our tourism”, explains Castilla.
“The Canary Islands are a destination that has all the necessary ingredients to be successful, even despite the war in Ukraine which, although it is turning out to be a nightmare, fortunately is not having the expected impact on tourist activity,” assured Ebel.

Accessibility improvements on the southern beaches of San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and San Agustín)

In recent months, various improvements have been carried out on different beaches in the southern municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, aiming to to secure nothing less than to have the best beaches available for residents and the tourists who visit throughout the year, as well as recovering Blue Flags, which were lost two years ago.

Works to improve accessibility, like the installation of walkways to facilitate access to the shore, with a canopy to provide shade area. These walkways and canopies have been installed on the beaches of Faro de Maspalomas, San Agustín and Meloneras, in addition to those already existing in Playa del Inglés.
On the other hand, new selective rubbish collection containers have been installed at the exits of the beaches, one of the requirements requested from the management organisation who coordinate the official Blue Flags system. The rehabilitation of the foot washing facilities and showers and the installation of stainless steel railings on the access stairs have also been added. over the next few days, all the information totems on each of the beaches will be renewed, with new maps and updated pictograms on each of them.
Months of effort have been aimed at making sure these beaches achieve the quality levels required by the organisation. The town hall say the are confident that with these actions they can recover the blue flags, the seal of quality for beaches, since they have fulfilled all the established requirements.

Over the last week, the sundbeds/hammocks that were pending renewal of their tarpaulins have been installed on the beaches of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Specifically, there are now 500 hammocks, which are distinguished by their chocolate brown colour, in addition to the 1,045 that were installed on February 14 when the service was resumed.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 18-20 March 2022

Spring has finally sprung, as the sun crosses the equator from south to north, the March equinox is this Sunday.
A festive weekend ahead with Spanish Father’s Day this Saturday, Día del Padre. It is also the feast day in honour of San José, Saint Joseph, the patron saint of families, fathers, pioneers and travellers and many more. After two years of postponements, religious processions start taking place once again on Gran Canaria. You’ll find some notable traditional celebrations around the churches of Tejeda, as well as in San Lorenzo and La Milagrosa in Las Palmas this Saturday.
Also, the first Gran Canaria Km.0 Fair of the year takes place this weekend in Valsequillo. On Sunday, enjoy cheese tastings, and artisanal cheeses from all over the Island of Gran Canaria accompanied by traditional music performances in the ancient pre-hispanic Gran Canarian Royal Capital, Gáldar.

It almost feels like the weather is playing tricks with us as strong winds, rainbows, hail, snow and even Calima mix to entertain us this week.
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, have forecast a weekend starting with predictions of occasional instability but light breezes, some cloud, and sunshine prevailing throughout Sunday, particularly in the southern municipalities.

Weather at this time of year can be quite changeable, and hard to predict, even just a short distance inland from the usually much sunnier coastal weather on the south.

Saturday and Sunday might be a little grey around the island, so it’s always good to be prepared. All in all average daytime temperatures of ” 19-20ºC in the shade, though certainly a touch colder up at the summits, with the predicted snow levels lower that the highest point of Gran Canaria.
