Foundation Investigated for Alleged Mismanagement of Public Funds Meant for Care of Unaccompanied Migrant Minors

The 7th Investigative Court of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has opened a preliminary investigation into the Social Response Foundation Siglo XXI and four of its directors. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in Las Palmas filed a complaint against them, alleging crimes that could include forgery of commercial documents, mismanagement, and embezzlement of public funds. The investigation aims to determine whether this nonprofit organisation, and its officials, could have misused public funds intended for the care of unaccompanied migrant minors, during the migration crisis of 2020 that was precipitated by the pandemic confinement on the islands, leading to a build up of arrivals having to be assessed and cared for by the Canary Islands Regional Government, using hotels left empty due to the lack of tourism. The estimated amount involved in the alleged misuse stands at around €12.5 million between 2020 and 2022 on Gran Canaria alone.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 13-15 May 2022

It’s mid-May already, and what a marvellous weekend we have ahead indeed. This weekend’s events, activities, and festivities will be as widespread as the unusual weather conditions we have experienced this past week, when Calima met thunder, lightening, rain and heatwave (though that’s all calmed down a bit now). There are patron saints’ festivities, flowers, parades, an Andalusian fiesta, museums, music, and markets to see, explore and enjoy, among many other attractions around the island. There is even a double whammy of celebrations going on around Maspalomas with the first Pride parade in two years and a traditional Romería, the first big one of the summer, both happening on the same day.

Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend starting with light breezes, some cloud cover and sunshine throughout the weekend, particularly in the southern resort areas of Mogán and Maspalomas. The weather has been playing around this week with some hot weather, then out of nowhere tropical thunderstorms, and grey skies. There are days when it is simply hard to predict the weather on Gran Canaria, especially on the long-range forecasts, but summertime is easier and just around the corner now…
The weekend looks good all around the island, so a great weekend for any kind of activity. All in all, average daytime temperatures should stay around 24-25ºC, in the shade, even up at the summits during the day, though you will need a jacket in the evenings. Some sunshine, some cloud cover so all in all, a very fine weekend indeed for Gran Canaria.

The Canary Guide Weekend Tips 1-3 April 2022

April begins with a few clouds and an occasional shower, but there are a few big fairs happening around the island this weekend, a great chance to really start to celebrate the Spring as we relentlessly move towards the Easter holidays. The island is enjoying some beautiful greenery due to the long-needed rainfalls over the past weeks, and Springtime blooms pepper the mountainsides.  Sunday’s weather forecast and the start of the new week warn of a possibility of further rains, especially in the north and mountainous areas, so be wary of adverse weather possibly causing cancellations or postponements of outdoor events. Tejeda and La Aldea enjoy their monthly markets on Saturday, with Tejeda is celebrating in Carnival style. Two big fairs in the north of Gran Canaria return with ENORTE in Gáldar and The Institutional Fair of the Canary Islands Products of the Land this weekend in San Mateo. Anfi Beach to the south will be busy on both Saturday and Sunday with big sporting events planned.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday look pretty good all around the island, so great days for any adventure. So far, the weather forecast is for rain for Sunday, in many places around the island, so good to be prepared for that possibility.  All in all average daytime temperatures should stay springlike with average of 21ºC in the shade, though certainly a touch colder up in the summits, and much hotter in direct sunlight on the coasts. Rain showers are predicted to start this first week of April 2022.
Weather at this time of year can be quite changeable, and hard to predict, even just a short distance inland from the usually much sunnier coastal weather on the south.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 25-27 March 2022

A little unstable weather is forecast for the weekend ahead. The Canary Islands Government has announced the suspension all the COVID-19 restrictions, it is going to feel a bit different than it has over the last 2 long years. Remember that preventive measures are still in place in some cases and masks are still in use indoors.
It’s Mother’s Day in UK this Sunday. Summer is a step closer with the spring forward of the clocks this Sunday as 1 AM becomes 2 AM. This will also mean sunrise and sunset will be about an hour later with more daylight to enjoy in the evenings.
Earth Hour is on this Saturday, 26 March between 20:30 -21:30. Many municipalities on Gran Canaria, including Agüimes, Teror, Las Palmas and many more, have also adopted this so no need to worry if some of the lights on large buildings are switched off for an hour this Saturday evening. This mainly happens in governmental buildings and on some streets. The annual Earth Hour lights-out event is held worldwide and the theme for this year’s campaign is “Re-think Plastics.
The symbolic turning off of lights for Earth Hour began in the city of Sydney in 2007. Since then, thousands of cities and towns around the world have joined this initiative, year after year, considered the largest environmental mobilisation campaign in history.
Overall a pretty great weekend ahead with sports, music and some carnival events taking place but it’s good to be aware that bad weather conditions can sometimes affect outdoor events taking place, particularly in case of heavy rain, which is expected as Storm Diego makes its way towards us.
Upcoming events:
ENORTE 1-3 April in GáldarFeria Institucional de Canarias de Productos de la Tierra 1-3 April in Vega de San MateoTejeda Market Carnival edition 2 April

Sunday looks a touch unstable around the island, so good to be prepared for all weathers, seeming to continue into next week. All in all average daytime temperatures should stay a comfortable, 22ºC in the shade, though certainly more chilly up in the summits.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 11-13 March 2022

The second weekend of March arrives with some excellent events taking place. The Artisan’s craft fair by FEDAC kicks off this Friday just next to the Maspalomas lighthouse. There is a European cheese Fair in Teror, an Eco market in Las Palmas and some covid friendly carnival celebrations taking place over the coming days.
Upcoming events:
Rally Villa de Santa Brigida 18-19 MarchKm.0 Fair Valsequillo 19-20 MarchENORTE 2022 in Gáldar 1-3 AprilThe 9th Institutional Fair of the Canary Islands Products of the Land 1-3 April
St. Patricks Day festivities next Thursday, 17 March

Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend starting with light breezes and some possible cloud cover in the southern municipality of Mogán with highs of 23 degrees celcius in the shade.
Weather at this time of year can be quite changeable, and hard to predict, even just a short distance inland from the usually much sunnier coastal weather on the south.
The weekend weather forecast looks pretty decent but by Monday some changes are expected pretty much across the whole island, except perhaps for the southern tourist enclaves, which will usually escape the heavier rains.

*** Check the regular markets and a range of other events on our main calendar at The Canary Guide website***
