Jul, 2022 | Events & Leisure, Fairs & Markets, Weekend Tips
Hello July and Hello Summer!
The summer months of July to September witness some of the most popular celebrations and the biggest traditional festivities and ‘romería’ pilgrimage offerings, on Gran Canaria.
In July, we have the Virgen del Carmen festivities in multiple locations, patron saint festivities in the name of Santiago Apóstol in Gáldar and San Bartolomé de Tirajana (This is also the Holy Year of ‘the Way of St. James’ on Gran Canaria ) and then there’s the Maspalomas Soul Festival towards the end of the month.
La Rama is in Agaete during August. The Fiestas del Pino, for the patron saint of Gran Canaria and the Fiesta del Charco, in La Aldea, in September, just to name a few of the biggest. Not forgetting all the other music festivals and concerts, bringing some most famous artists to the island including March Anthony and Pet Shop Boys.
This weekend will see history being made as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria celebrates its Carnival festivities in the summer season, for the first time. It’s the main Fataga Apricot festivalv weekend, just 20 minutes from the beaches of Maspalomas; experience a traditional Farmers’ Feast in San Mateo, as well as commercial street fair in the town of Ingenio, together with their Patron Saint San Pedro’s festivities coming to an end at the same time. Don’t forget to check The Canary Guide calendar for other events and festivities.
Upcoming local bank holidays: Saturday 16 July, Mogán- Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen.Monday 25 July, Gáldar and San Bartolomé de Tirajana – patron saint festivities in honour of Santiago Apóstol, Saint James the ApostleTuesday 26 July, Gáldar – Festivities Santa Ana

Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend of warm weather and sunshine and some possible morning clouds in the southern resorts of Mogán and Maspalomas. With a UV index of around 11 and temperatures in the shade staying around the upper 20s, sea breezes from the south will put next week in to the low 30s and climbing.
It is good to remember that the weather can occasionally be quite changeable, and hard to predict, even just a short distance inland from the usually sunnier coastal weather on the south, other things can happen.
Throughout the weekend in the south, day time should have clear skies, according to the weather forecast, and the north of the island will experience more prominent cloud cover, and the possibility of rain.

The Canary Guide #WeekendTips 17-19 June 2022
Jun, 2022 | Carnival, Tourism, Weekend Tips
It is the weekend before the midsummer San Juan Festivities, one of the biggest celebrations on Gran Canaria, and with summer solstice one of the oldest with spring officially becoming summer. This year San Juan lands on a Friday, and together with the eve of San Juan, both days will put ancient traditions on show, and there will be a lot of festivities and events to see and experience. The next Canary Guide #WeekendTips will be out in time to highlight some of these cultural traditions celebrated en masse on Gran Canaria.
This weekend is pretty full of worthy must-see seasonal events. For the first time ever (to our knowledge) Maspalomas Carnival is being held in June, with this main weekend of celebration including “The Day of the tourist”, and the rescue of the Sardine on Friday, from Maspalomas Lighthouse to Playa del Inglés beach, then later an “international” show at the Yumbo, you can expect thousands of people for the parade on Saturday and then the “Sardine’s funeral and cremation” with the “last will and testament” with fireworks on Sunday will mark the end of this hotter than usual Carnival affair in the south.
There will be another edition of the Km.0 Fair Gran Canaria, also happening this weekend, in Arucas along with their Patronal Saint festivities, San Juan is big on this island and no mistake; making it the perfect time to visit this beautiful town and not forgetting their traditional Corpus Christi religious ceremony, with handmade street carpets of coloured salt on Sunday. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria continues with their Foundational Festivities, culminating in one of the biggest celebrations in the city, next week, on the eve of San Juan at Las Canteras beach.
Upcoming bank holidays on Gran Canaria:Monday, 20 June is a local Bank holiday in Moya – Festivities of San Antonio de Padua ( St. Anthony).Friday, 24 June is a local Bank holiday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde, Arucas, La Aldea de San Nicolás, TerorFoundational festivities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, festivities in honour of San Juan Bautista in Telde, Arucas and La Aldea and Festividad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Teror

Weather Outlook
Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, forecast a weekend starting with light breezes as well as sunshine throughout the coming days in the southern tourism heartlands of Mogán and Maspalomas. Average daytime temperatures will be a rather gorgeous 30ºC, in the shade, on the south, with the possibility of some calima haze, and perhaps some choppy seas with a yellow advisory waning in place for coastal phenomena. In direct sunlight, it is going to feel much hotter.
The weekend looks good around the island, so a great weekend for any adventure or event, whether it’s Carnival, Patron Saint festivities, or just having a walk in the mountains or a beach day. All in all average daytime temperature is looking around 25º-30ºC in the shade. A perfect weekend across Gran Canaria!

Guardia Civil arrests two men for animal abuse and abandonment in Santa Lucía de Tirajana
The Guardia Civil’s Seprona Patrol (Environment and Animal welfare) from the Vecindario Post, between January 08 and 14, arrested a 26-year-old man and another 50-year-old man, as the alleged perpetrators of a crime of animal abuse and abandonment. The events occurred after several residents of Santa Lucía de Tirajana provided the Guardia Civil videos and photographs of the unfortunate state the animals were being kept in, suspecting a possible case of mistreatment or omission of the necessary care for their subsistence.
A uniformed SEPRONA patrol moved to the place, indicated by the local residents, and found twelve dogs, most of them hunting dogs.
The habitats where the animals were found were in a state that was incompatible with life, due to a lack of hygiene and, furthermore, the dogs were in a state of extreme malnourishment with obvious infestations by different parasites and many had unhealed wounds.
One of the dogs was missing half a leg and the wound was still unhealed due to lack of veterinary care.
Of the twelve animals, 4 lacked the requisite identification or documentation for their possession, for which Seprona initiated several administrative files, including lack of vaccination, lacking town hall registrations in the census and lack of a zoocan identifications.
It should be noted that, during the inspection carried out by the Guardia Civil, several interested people approached, requesting to be able to express their objections to the treatment that these animals. Subsequently, 9 people filed official complaints, arguing that the facts had already been exposed to other institutions outside the Guardia Civil, not only because of the state of the animals but because they did not stop barking all day.
The Guardia Civil communicated with those responsible for Santa Lucía Town Council, requesting they collect the animals, also requesting the presence of a veterinary doctor to come to the scene, for an in-situ assessment of the state of the animals and their kennels before seizing the animals. Once an examination of each animal was carried out, they were handed over to the municipal services of the Santa Lucía de Tirajana Town Council, remaining in custody at the Council’s facilities until a resolution or judicial pronouncement can be made in this regard.
During the inspection, SEPRONA detected two buildings in the area where the animals were located that were built illegally on protected rustic land, also carrying out the appropriate steps in terms of urban planning for a crime Against Territorial Planning.
Proceedings and detainees were handed over to the Duty Court of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
