The long hot August is here and as it’s also the first weekend of the month, a busy summer weekend ahead with a bundle of events happening all around the island. Not even going to comment about the weather ….but it’s looking marvelous as ever.

Friday 3 August, Arguineguín, Mogán
Noche de Vinos 

What better way to spend your Friday night than with good company, some wine and music.  The Night of Wines and Tapas will have the participation of wineries of Gran Canaria, several restaurants and ambient music to liven up the evening. At the Arguineguín port area from 20:00-01:00

This is part of the 2nd edition of the Tuna Fair so it’s a win-win situation for a perfect evening.

 


3-5 August, Mogán, Arguineguin 
Feria del Atún 

The Port of Arguineguín hosts the second edition of the Mogán Tuna Fair between Friday and Sunday. The second edition honours the values and traditions of the two fishing towns in the municipality.

Friday  the fair  program will start in the gastronomic area with the Night of Wines and Tapas that will have participation of various Gran Canaria wineries, several restaurants along with ambient music to liven up the evening.

Saturday begins at 18:00 and is dedicated to children with exclusive activities for them related to the theme of the Fair as well as various craft stalls. At the same time, in the kitchen area, chefs from various areas of the island will make a range of local dishes. That same evening, at 20:00 a tribute will be paid to the sailors of the municipality with the delivery of recognitions and awards to the representatives of the Fishermen’s Guilds of Arguineguín and Playa de Mogán. Next, the gastronomic zone will open to allow attendees to enjoy the different elaborations,  show cooking will be  at the hands of various top restoration professionals invited for the occasion.

On Sunday there will be the great festival of tuna, from 11:00 hours, the gastronomic area will open, workshops will be held for children as well as a crafts fair. The authorities will officially open the event with a presentation by Chef Juanlu , the Cádiz-born expert in the various methods of using the star product of this Fair, Local artisanally caught Tuna.

One of the novelties of this second edition, the gastronomic contest for the Best Plate with Tuna in Gran Canaria will be held from 12:30 and the awards ceremony for the participants for this and the Best Tapa will be at 16:30, shortly before the end of the second edition of the Mogán Tuna Fair.


3-4 August, Las Palmas

The 22nd edition of Temudas, the International theatre, music and dance festival will come to an end this weekend but there are still free outdoor events happening on Friday and Saturday.

The vibraphonist Aridane Martín presents his first record project as director: Tiébélé. In this breeding ground is where the seven original compositions that shape the project are gestated.

The western coastal Village of San Nicolás is the perfect destination to spend a rather different Saturday. This Saturday, the Market and Exhibition of Crafts and Accessories. The Craft and Accessories Market offers a wide variety of stands, which will remain open from 9:00 to 14:00 pm, on Calle Real.

In addition,  the collaboration of the Cultural Project of Community Development of La Aldea,  will open a fortnight of Living Museums that can be visited for free.
Fifteen museums will show an old unitary school, water machinery, a farm, an old store of oil and vinegar, a consultation of a Rural Doctor, trades such as those of a potter or carpenter, a traditional butcher shop or another where the history of the musicians of the municipality.

Also, you can enjoy a car slalom show in the Barranco de La Aldea, from Castañeta to the surroundings of Punto Limpio.
The verifications will be on Saturday morning, and contests start at 15:00 and then the trophies at 19:00.

Summer activities: Tai chi chuan & Chi kung 

Once again, this summer, the town council of San Bartlomé de Tirajana has organised free activities during the coming summer months.

Every Saturday, there is a free Tai Chi class in Chuan (Yang Style) and Chi Kung (Various Styles), in Playa del Inglés. In collaboration with The Canary Association of Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung, directed by the Sifu Jordi Moya Pizarro.

Saturday 4 August, Arucas
El Mercado Agrícola y Ganadero de Arucas

The Agricultural and Livestock Market of Arucas began to develop in June 2008, at the initiative of the Coag (Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Cattle Ranchers) and the Federation of Cattlemen of Gran Canaria (Fedegran), later moving to the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, institution in charge of the organization at present.

This market takes place every fifteen days in the facilities of the Cabildo’s Agricultural Farm, located next to the exit toward Arucas from the GC-2 northern motorway, on the north coast of Gran Canaria. The market comprises some 65 exhibitors (farmers and ranchers) who market their products directly to the  consumer, with the aim of lowering the costs added by intermediaries. From 08:30 – 14:30


4-5 August, Agaete
Fiestas de las Nieves

One of the major symbols of identity of the island of Gran Canaria is, without a doubt, la Fiesta de La Rama in Agaete. This is the main fiesta of the town in honour of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows), which was declared a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest in 1972.

August 5th is the main fiesta in honour of the Virgin Mary, but it is the day before, August 4th, when the Fiesta de La Rama is held, when thousands of dancers go through the town waving palm branches in the air, to the rhythm of the two municipal bands, as far as the sanctuary of la Virgen de Las Nieves.

La Fiesta de La Rama, according to those who have studied it, may have a similar meaning to a rain dance ceremony once practiced by the native Canary Islands inhabitants who brought palm branches down from the mountain of Tirma with which to strike the sea while they sang songs asking their Gods for rain. In the modern-day Fiesta de la Rama of Agaete the branches are not used for hitting the sea, but are offered to the Virgin Mary.

The farmer’s market and handicrafts. Every fortnight, on a Sunday, in a small park , surrounded by palm trees and to the sound of typical Canarian music, early in the morning there is a farmers and crafts market.

Locally grown fruits and vegetables, cheese, sweets and so much more. This weekend also the new market season starts, so there are also tastings of typical Canarian delights.

The market is open from 08:30-14:30, right beside the famous Angry Birds Activity Park.

 


Sunday 5 August, Triana, Las Palmas 
Primer Fin de Semana Abierto

It’s the first weekend of the month so the First Open Weekend initiative will take place again on Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00. The shops and restaurants assigned to the Business Association of Triana will welcome the summer by opening their doors to the public, the initiative of commercial and entertainment revitalization will once again host activities for children and adults, aimed at complementing the Sunday shopping day.

The first visitors of the zone will be able to participate in the Bailoterapia Workshop ( 11:00-13:00), in charge of the toy store Eurekakids, in which the smallest ones will be able to unleash their creativity through dance. For this they will have a monitor that will teach them steps and pirouettes that will bring them values ​​that go beyond fun (Triana, 35). Also, at the same time, the puppet workshop ( 11:00-14:00) will take place, in which the youngest will learn to make guiñoles (Triana, 56).

The La Caja de Canarias Foundation will place, in calle Triana, number 20, ( 11:00-14:00) a chess workshop in which the children can learn the moves of this strategy game or practice it, depending on their level of game.

Likewise, the Triana Business Association has also planned a face painting workshop ( 11:00-14:00)v and face painting so that the children can decorate their faces with fun motifs and symbols. (Triana, 102).

The Business Association has also planned actions for adults. Again, at number 13 on Calle Torres, the Shack Bar will host the exhibition of vinyl and second-hand clothes (11:00-18:00), and a musical performance (13:00-18:00) .
