#WeekendTips 29-31 August 2025#WeekendTips & #GranCanariaWeather

Hello “Noche de Finaos” and November.  It is going to be a busy first weekend of the month with traditional and new-ish events to celebrate the traditional “Noche de Finaos” on Friday, infused with Halloween madness. This will be combined with monthly markets, the last of the patron saint festivities in Vecindario, and even a rally on the south of the island.

It’s a great weekend to get out and about, into the mountains, up to the rugged North Coast, to the capital or wind to the wild west, for some of the wonderful monthly markets happening all across the island as it is the first weekend of the month.

 Highlights

• In the south, enjoy an Artisan Fair by the Maspalomas lighthouse, ‘Mas Comerio SBT’ fair in Parque del Sur, and then there is also the Maspalomas Rally taking place. And when there is a rally going on, it also means road closures during the stages.

• In Artenara, the highest altitude village on Gran Canaria, there is the traditional monthly market on Saturday and concerts in the evening, and on Sunday, discover the Traditions fair. What a great weekend to stay up in the mountains for the night in one of the rural houses or hotels.

• Monthly markets to enjoy also in Tejeda and La Aldea, and the English Market in Las Palmas. Then there are the newer craft fairs in Gáldar and Guía.

• Vecindario is celebrating their last weekend of Fiestas San Rafael with some big concerts and then some.

Noche de Finaos

The 31st of October has long been celebrated here in the Canary Islands. A most traditional celebration where families gather and tell each other stories of family members long departed, ancestors of note, parents, grandparents, and the occasional spooky ghost story.  Of course, US influences have seeped in over recent years, but the more traditional Canarians have always seen this as a great opportunity to reconnect with the past and munch on sweet chestnuts, freshly roasted over open fires, as each community gathers together to celebrate mid-autumn and remember their dead.

Whether it is the Christian Fiesta de Todos los Santos, the more pagan Halloween from which it comes, All Saints Eve, All Hallows’ Eve, the Canarian Noche de Finaos, which lead to the Mexican Day of the Dead or simply the Fiesta de la Castaña (the chestnut) there are plenty of seasonal celebrations going on this Friday night all around Gran Canaria, and on into the weekend. The cemeteries will have extended opening hours for the families to visit. These days, it’s a mix of traditions and commercial activities here, and if it encourages a night out, many bars and restaurants will do their best to entertain and frighten, so dressing up is ALWAYS encouraged!

Saturday, 1st of November 2025 is also a National bank holiday throughout Spain.  Some local stores might be closed,  so good idea to double check the opening hours before planning a shopping trip.

“With the arrival of autumn, thousands of Cory’s shearwater chicks take their first night flight from the cliffs to the sea.  But instead of following the moonlight, many are dazzled by urban lighting, especially in densely populated coastal areas. This disorients them, causing them to fall to the ground, crash into lampposts or power lines, and even be run over.”

💙  If you find an injured shearwater, the first thing to do is to catch it, using a rag if it tries to bite you. Don’t leave it for later, because they’re capable of hiding.

💙  Then carefully place it in a cardboard box; other materials tend to damage the feathers, and they are more delicate than they appear at first glance.

💙 It’s also a good idea to fill the bottom of the box with sawdust or newspaper shavings, which act as absorbents for any animal droppings. You can ventilate the inside of the box by making a few holes in it.

💙  Once closed, leave the box in a quiet place, protected from the sun or rain, and call the emergency numbers: 112,  Guardia Civil, Local Police, Red Cross, Civil Protection, or the Environmental Department.

💙 Do not give any water or food.
