Christmas programs are in full swing with concerts, markets, Santas, and also postponed events from last weekend due to Storm #Emilia.  There’s still a winter chill in the air, some wet weather around… perhaps even a chance of snow… take time to take time.

Merry Christmas!

Top Tips for this Weekend (Dec 19-21)

It’s the final weekend before Christmas, and the island is buzzing with activity. While last week was dominated by Storm Emilia, this weekend sees a mix of festive programs in full swing and the return of several events that were previously postponed.

  • ⚠️🌤️ Weather Update: Post-Storm Recovery
Following the harsh conditions of Storm Emilia, the weather is stabilising, though some residual effects may remain. Temperatures in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are expected to range between 17°C and 22°C on Friday and Saturday, with a slight drop to 16°C–21°C on Sunday. Expect intervals of clouds with occasional light rain, primarily in the north and mid-altitude areas.
  • 🍊🛍️ Sunday Highlight: The Telde Orange Fair
If you missed out on market trips last week, this Sunday, December 21, features the Telde Orange Fair (Feria de la Naranja). It’s the perfect opportunity to grab fresh local citrus and enjoy one of the island’s most popular seasonal agricultural events.
  • 🏍️🎅 Santa on Wheels: Bikers’ Parades
Keep an eye out for the annual Bikers’ Santa Parades taking place across the south6. The roar of engines and red suits will take over Mogán on Friday, Dec 19, followed by a second parade in San Bartolomé de Tirajana on Saturday, Dec 20.
  • 🎄✨ Christmas Markets & Programs
The festive season is hitting its peak with several markets opening this weekend:
    • Friday, Dec 19: Gáldar celebrates “La Noche Blanca” (White Night) with a variety of late-night activities and its ongoing Flower Week.

    • Saturday, Dec 20: New Christmas markets open in Agaete, Guía, and Playa de Mogán.

    • Maspalomas: The “Christmas Around The World” program at Parque Sur begins this Saturday, Dec 20, and runs through early January.

  • 🚜🎶 Traditions in Santa Lucía
The town of Santa Lucía concludes its patron saint festivities this weekend. The main event, the Romería de Los Labradores, takes place this Sunday, featuring traditional music, costumes, and local offerings.
  • 🏎️💨 Carrizal Motor Show
For those looking for something beyond Christmas carols, the Carrizal Motor Show is happening in Ingenio throughout the weekend.
  • 🧥🧣 Packing Advice
While the “Winter Storm” has passed, it’s not quite “flip-flop” weather yet, especially in the evenings. Stick with light layers and a jacket for the north or when visiting the higher altitudes for the Romería.

Note on Weather: While the south of the island (like Puerto Rico) is looking relatively stable with only light passing showers, the higher altitude of Santa Lucía de Tirajana means it will likely be cooler and potentially cloudier. If you are heading up to the mountains for the Romería, a warm layer or a jacket is definitely recommended!

Overview ☀️

🌴 #GranCanariaWeather

The Weekend Forecast

The third weekend of December brings a shift in the atmosphere as we transition into the festive season. While the mainland prepares for a sharper winter chill, the Canary Islands remain a sanctuary of stability, though not without the seasonal touch of the trade winds. The focus this weekend is on local community spirit, with Christmas markets and automotive shows taking center stage across the island.

As the astronomical winter begins this Sunday, December 21, the archipelago faces a minor “unstable” pulse of weather. This will bring some cloud cover and the return of light precipitation to the northern slopes and peaks. While temperatures remain pleasant for exploring, the arrival of slightly cooler air marks the official start of the winter season in the Atlantic.

For those planning their Christmas Eve and Day celebrations, the long-range outlook suggests a “typical” December for the islands. While there are no major heatwaves or severe storms on the immediate horizon, the forecast confirms that the northern midlands will see more frequent cloudiness and occasional light rain, while the southern coasts continue to enjoy drier, brighter conditions.

🌧️ The Weekend Outlook

  • Friday, December 19

The day begins with cloudy intervals across the island, tending to become more overcast by the afternoon. In the north, expect occasional light rain that could be more persistent in mid-altitude and summit areas. In the south, specifically at Puerto Rico beach, the morning will be cloudy, transitioning to “intervalos nubosos” (cloudy intervals) with some chance of light rain later in the day. Winds will generally be light from the north, shifting to the northeast and strengthening by evening.

    • Puerto Rico: Max 21°C | Min 15°C

    • Las Palmas: Max 22°C | Min 17°C

  • Saturday, December 20

Cloudy skies continue in the north with a high probability of light, occasional rain, particularly in the midlands. The rest of the island will see cloudy intervals. For those in the Puerto Rico and Amadores area, there is a high probability (95%) of light, scattered rain throughout the day. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with stronger gusts possible in the southeast and northwest, while the southwestern coast should remain sheltered.

    • Puerto Rico: Max 20°C | Min 14°C

    • Las Palmas: Max 20°C | Min 17°C

  • Sunday, December 21

The pattern remains consistent, with the north of the island seeing a predominance of clouds and light rain. Elsewhere, expect cloudy intervals, though light and occasional precipitation cannot be ruled out, especially in the south during the afternoon. In Puerto Rico, the chance of light rain remains very high (100%), with skies mostly overcast in the morning and becoming more broken as the day progresses. Temperatures will stay stable or see very slight local decreases.

    • Puerto Rico: Max 20°C | Min 14°C

    • Las Palmas: Max 21°C | Min 16°C

🔭 Looking Ahead to Next Week

Looking Ahead:

As we head into Christmas week, the unsettled weather from the weekend begins to stabilize, though the island remains under the influence of the northern trade winds. The initial sharp drop in temperatures will level out, returning to a consistent and pleasant seasonal range. While the “Endless Summer” heat of early December has faded, the week ahead looks bright for the south, while the north will continue to see its characteristic “Panza de Burro” (donkey’s belly) cloud cover and the occasional light morning mist.

Monday, December 22

The week begins with a continuation of the weekend’s pattern, characterized by the persistent presence of the trade winds. Expect predominantly cloudy skies in the north with weak, occasional precipitation that could be more persistent in the midlands and higher elevations. For the rest of the island, expect alternating intervals of sun and cloud, though there remains a small chance of light, scattered showers reaching the southern slopes during the afternoon. Winds will be moderate from the north, shifting to the northeast by the morning.

Las Palmas: Max 20°C | Min 16°C

Tuesday, December 23

Conditions start to settle further as we approach Christmas Eve. Temperatures will see a slight recovery, feeling a touch warmer in the sun, particularly in the southern coastal areas. The cloud bank in the north may begin to break up more frequently in the afternoon, while the southern beaches enjoy mostly clear, sunny skies. Winds remain a steady northeast breeze, maintaining the island’s typical fresh atmosphere.

Las Palmas: Max 21°C | Min 17°C

Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve)

A very stable day for the holiday celebrations. Expect a classic Gran Canaria Christmas Eve with bright sunshine across the southern tourist resorts and coastal areas. The north will maintain some cloudy intervals, but any risk of rain is significantly reduced, becoming very unlikely. It will be a perfect evening for outdoor dining and festive strolls, though a light jacket will be needed as temperatures dip once the sun sets.

Las Palmas: Max 21°C | Min 17°C

Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day)

Christmas Day looks set to be beautiful and bright across most of the archipelago. Following the stable trend of the previous days, temperatures remain consistent with plenty of sunshine for those planning a festive dip in the ocean or a beach-side lunch. Any northern clouds will be high and thin, with the potential for more sunshine than the preceding days, allowing for a warm, pleasant holiday across the island.

Las Palmas: Max 21°C | Min 16°C
