#GranCanariaWeather for the weekend ahead
-
Top Tips for this Weekend
The weather has taken a dramatic turn! We are facing a “Winter Storm” scenario with AEMET warnings for wind and rain. This weekend is about staying safe, checking for cancellations, and enjoying the cosy side of Christmas.
⚠️☔ Weather Warning: Storm Alert! A major Atlantic front is sweeping over the island. AEMET has issued yellow and orange warnings for strong winds (gusts up to 90km/h) and rough seas. Conditions in the mountains and northern slopes will be harsh, with heavy rain and even a chance of snow or hail on the highest peaks. Please avoid unnecessary travel to the summits and stay away from coastal breakwaters and edges during high winds.
🚦🚩 Check Before You Travel With the adverse weather, many outdoor events are at risk of last-minute cancellation or postponement (the Telde Tapas Night on Friday is already postponed). Before driving to markets in Moya, Ingenio, or Sardina del Sur, check the official Town Hall social media pages for the latest updates.
🛍️🥑 Markets: Avocados & Artisans (Weather Permitting) If the winds allow, Sunday sees the 10th Avocado Fair in Arguineguín (Plaza Pérez Galdós), which should be more sheltered than the north. The “Ingeniarte” craft fair in Ingenio and the Moya Christmas Market are also scheduled for the weekend—perfect for unique gifts, provided the tents stay up!
🧥🧣 Swap Flip-Flops for Waterproofs The “Endless Summer” is on pause. Temperatures are dropping significantly, with highs struggling to reach 20°C in the north and 23°C in the south. If you are heading out, leave the beach gear at home and pack a raincoat, warm layers, and sturdy shoes. It’s definitely jacket weather!
🎄☕ Cosy Christmas Vibes Use the rainy weather as an excuse to enjoy the island’s indoor delights. It’s the perfect weekend to hit the shopping malls (Las Arenas, Atlántico, Alisios) for Christmas gifts, visit the sheltered stalls at the San Telmo or Santa Catalina markets in Las Palmas, or simply find a local cafeteria for hot chocolate and churros while the rain falls.
🏄♂️🌊 Watch the Waves (From a Distance) The sea will be rough, especially on northern and western coasts. While there are no major swimming events this weekend (the Open Water was last week), the ocean will be spectacular to watch from a safe distance. Surfers might find epic conditions, but for everyone else, it’s a “look but don’t touch” kind of weekend.

Overview ☀️
🌴 #GranCanariaWeather
Winter Arrives with a Bang (…And Maybe Snow!) ❄️⛈️
Hold onto your hats—literally! After weeks of glorious stability, the weather is taking a dramatic turn this weekend.
A small “Winter Storm” is headed this way from the north, bringing much-needed rain, strong winds, and the very real possibility of snow on our highest peaks.
AEMET has issued yellow and orange advisories for wind and coastal phenomena. The “North/South split” will be extreme: the northern midlands and summits will bear the brunt of the rainstorm with heavy showers and gusts, while the south will see calmer, albeit breezier, conditions. If you are planning to drive up to the mountains to hunt for snow, please proceed with caution—roads may be icy or closed due to rockfalls.
#GranCanariaWeather Dec 12 - 14
🌧️ The Weekend Outlook (Dec 12 – 14)
Friday 12 Dec |
-
Vibe: Clouds thickening and winds picking up.
-
Conditions: Rain will start in the north and east, becoming heavier by evening. The south (Maspalomas/Mogán) will remain mostly dry but will lose that “beach day” heat as the wind turns northerly.
-
Temperatures: Highs dropping to 20°C in the capital, 23°C in the south.
Saturday 13 Dec | 🌬️❄️
-
Vibe: Wild, windy, and wintry. This is the day to watch.
-
⚠️ The Alert: Strong northerly winds will batter the island, with gusts exceeding 90 km/h in exposed highlands and eastern/western slopes.
-
❄️ Snow Watch: The freezing level is dropping. We expect precipitation in the summits (Tejeda/Pico de las Nieves) to fall as snow or sleet!
-
Rain: Heavy showers and potential hailstorms in the north. The south may see occasional spill-over showers, but will mostly just be very windy.
-
Sea: Very rough conditions (Force 7-8). Avoid swimming on northern/exposed coasts.
Sunday 14 Dec |
-
Vibe: The worst passes, but it stays fresh.
-
Conditions: The wind decreases significantly but remains breezy. Showers will become lighter and confined to the north.
-
South: A mix of sun and cloud. A good day for the Avocado Fair in Arguineguín, which should be sheltered from the remaining northerly winds.
🔭 Looking Ahead to Next Week
Looking Ahead:
🔮 Into Next Week (Dec 15 onwards)
Monday 15 – Tuesday 16 As the storm system moves away, stability returns—but slowly. Monday will still see plenty of cloud and lingering showers in the north (Arucas/Moya), but the sun will break through more frequently. Temperatures will begin to recover slightly, lifting the “winter chill” from the air.
Outlook for Mid-Week By Wednesday, we expect a return to our classic trade wind weather: sunshine in the south, partly cloudy mornings in the north, and calm seas. The snow on the peaks (if it stuck!) will likely melt rapidly as the sun returns. It looks like a dry and pleasant run-up to the main Christmas week.
Telde Orange Fair | Sunday 14th 🍊🍊 ***POSTPONED*** NEW DATE 21 DECEMBER
Plaza de San Gregorio will host the 2025 Orange Fair this Sunday, from 09:00 to 15:00.

The event features children’s workshops and musical performances. Other local farmers will also be present with their high-quality “Saborea Telde” products, such as wines, olive oil, olives, gofio (a type of flour), honey, yoghurt, avocados, and other products made with Telde oranges. Participating restaurants will offer special dishes featuring Telde oranges as the star ingredient. Sorbets, mojitos, orange chicken and fish, churros with chocolate and orange, orange cheesecake, and chocolate and orange gummies are just some of the delicacies that can be found in the heart of the city during this festival.
The businesses participating in this edition will be La Canela, Cafetería Manhattan, Churrería Melian, Antequera, Oasis Chill Out, La Cervecita, and Ca’Nerea.
