  • Top Tips for this Weekend

The island is buzzing this weekend with major events and the final days of a long “Puente” bank holiday!

🚴‍♀️🚦 Plan Ahead for Bike Week & Congestion The Gran Canaria Bike Week is running its final, most popular stages all three days until Sunday, causing extensive road closures and delays, particularly on routes inland. Expect heavy traffic in the North and in the Capital area due to the popular Christmas Markets in San Telmo and Santa Catalina. Furthermore, the Regional Wine, Cheese and Honey Fair in Tejeda on Saturday and Sunday is going to be busy, so allow extra time if heading to the summits.

🎄✨ Christmas Sparkle: North, South, and Capital Catch the festive light-up ceremonies this weekend: On Friday, the Christmas lights are switched on in Arucas and on Avda. de Gáldar in Maspalomas. On Saturday, the lights come on in Moya and La Aldea (which also hosts a Christmas market). In the capital, you can enjoy the Christmas program and the illuminated displays at Mesa y López and Santa Catalina.

🛍️ Explore Gran Canaria’s Festive Markets & Fairs December is peak market season! Head up to Tejeda on Saturday and Sunday for the renowned Regional Wine, Cheese and Honey Fair. In the capital, you have the Beefeater Christmas Market in Parque San Telmo (running until Monday, Dec 8) and the market at El Corte Inglés, Mesa y López. On Saturday, you can also combine a trip to the La Aldea Christmas Market with the lights-on event.

☀️🧢 Warm Days, Chilly Heights Expect outstanding weather for all coastal activities. The South will be sunny and warm, reaching highs of 23–24°C. The North and Las Palmas will see mild conditions around 22°C, but with morning cloud cover. If you are heading to the Tejeda Fair or the Agaete Fiestas, remember temperatures drop sharply in the evenings and in the mountains. Pack a warm layer for the nighttime concerts and a hat and sunscreen for the daytime.

🎉 Culture & Fiestas Finale This weekend marks the end of several important traditional celebrations. Join the last days of the Fiestas San Nicolás de Bari in Sardina del Sur (Santa Lucía) and the Fiestas de la Inmaculada Concepción y la Caña de Azúcar in Jinámar (Telde), which runs until the public holiday on Monday. Also, on Saturday night, enjoy music at the “Musicando” concert in Parque Doramas or the “Castillo en clave de mar” event in Castillo del Romeral.

Overview ☀️

🌴 #GranCanariaWeather

Gran Canaria is firmly settled under the influence of an Atlantic high-pressure system, which means our weather will be characterised by the classic, and welcome, trade wind regime. This weekend promises stable conditions, allowing all major events—especially the high-altitude stages of the Gran Canaria Bike Week and the outdoor Christmas celebrations—to proceed smoothly.

The defining feature will be the typical north/south contrast. The southern and western coasts, from Maspalomas to Puerto de Mogán, will enjoy abundant, unbroken sunshine, with maximum temperatures feeling like a comfortable summer’s day. Meanwhile, the northern half of the island, including Las Palmas and the coastal towns up to Agaete, will experience the Panza de Burro (Donkey’s Belly), or trade wind cloudiness. This cloud will be most persistent in the early morning and late evening, but sunny intervals are expected to break through, keeping conditions mild and pleasant.

Coastal breezes will dominate, ensuring the air is fresh but not strong enough to cause disruption, with wind gusts remaining light. The humidity is manageable, and more importantly, the chance of rainfall across the entire island remains negligible (0-10% probability) for all three days of the weekend. This is fantastic news for the final stages of the Gran Canaria Bike Week, which will see cyclists tackle some challenging and beautiful mountain roads that will be dry and safe.

For the higher-altitude areas and the summits, particularly for those attending the Christmas switch-on in Teror or the festive markets in the medianías, expect crisp, clear mornings with significantly cooler air compared to the coast. While the peaks will be sunny and boast spectacular views, temperatures will drop to around 8-10°C overnight, peaking in the high teens during the day. Layering up is essential, but the visibility will be superb. Overall, it’s a stellar start to the festive month, offering fantastic, safe weather for all weekend plans.

📅 The Weekend Outlook

Friday, December 5: Sand, Sun & Chill

A beautiful day to kick off the weekend and a big night for the capital.

  • Coastal South & West: Full Sun from morning until evening. Highs will settle comfortably at 23°C to 24°C in Maspalomas and Mogán. Light trade winds will make beach time perfect.

  • North & Capital (Las Palmas): Cloudy start, but a low chance of light rain. Cloud cover will break up by midday, giving way to bright intervals. High of 22°C. Perfect weather for the evening opening of the Sand Nativity Scene at Las Canteras.

  • Summits/Medianías: Sunny and clear at altitude. Bike Week riders tackling the Risco Blanco stage will enjoy dry roads and a high of around 18°C, but a significant chill factor in the shade.

Saturday, December 6: The Highs

Statistically the brightest and most settled day of the weekend, perfect for the major Fiestas.

  • Coastal South & West: Wall-to-Wall Sunshine. Temperatures will hold at the weekend high of 24°C, with virtually no cloud cover and minimal wind. Sea conditions are calm.

  • North & Capital: Mostly sunny spells throughout the day. The “Donkey’s Belly” cloud will be less persistent than Friday, offering an excellent day for the capital’s markets. High of 23°C.

  • Summits/Medianías: The ideal day for the Gáldar/North stage of Bike Week and the final weekend of the Fiestas San Nicolás de Bari in Sardina del Sur. Expect clear skies above the cloud layer and a high of 17°C. Low humidity and light north-easterly winds (max 15 km/h) make for comfortable cycling and celebrating.

Sunday, December 7: Calm Coasts

A consistently pleasant day, concluding both major island events with mild temperatures.

  • Coastal South & West: Another day of nearly uninterrupted sunshine for the final, more coastal stage of Bike Week in Maspalomas. Highs remain stable at 23°C.

  • North & Capital: Cloud intervals will return, but they will be light and high. Mostly dry and mild. High of 22°C.

  • Summits/Medianías: Clear and sunny, ideal for mountain drives or hiking before the temperature dips in the evening. Winds remain light. Temperatures consistent with Saturday.

🔭 Looking Ahead to Next Week

Looking Ahead:

The high-pressure system is forecast to remain dominant over the Canary Islands, guaranteeing a prolonged period of dry, stable, and unseasonably mild weather well into the next working week. There are no signs of any significant cold fronts or instability on the horizon.

  • Monday, Dec 8 – Tuesday, Dec 9: Temperatures remain absolutely consistent. Southern coasts will bask in continuous sunshine, reaching 24°C daily. The North will be largely cloudy, but with a slight improvement in the afternoon, hitting 22°C in Las Palmas. Wind remains light trade-wind strength (NE 10-15 km/h).

  • Wednesday, Dec 10 – Thursday, Dec 11: The weather remains largely settled. There is a slight chance of increased cloud and wind in the central peaks and the Northwest coast on Wednesday, but temperatures remain high (23-24°C South, 21°C North). By Thursday, conditions settle back down to the week’s average. Rain probability remains very low across all areas. The summits will stay dry, sunny, and cool (highs around 18°C), maintaining excellent visibility for high-altitude activities.

In summary, expect Gran Canaria to remain the perfect winter sun destination with no major weather disruptions to anticipate for all your outdoor plans over the next seven days.
