“With the arrival of autumn, thousands of Cory’s shearwater chicks take their first night flight from the cliffs to the sea. But instead of following the moonlight, many are dazzled by urban lighting, especially in densely populated coastal areas. This disorients them, causing them to fall to the ground, crash into lampposts or power lines, and even be run over.”
If you find an injured shearwater, the first thing to do is to catch it, using a rag if it tries to bite you. Don’t leave it for later, because they’re capable of hiding.
Then carefully place it in a cardboard box; other materials tend to damage the feathers, and they are more delicate than they appear at first glance.
It’s also a good idea to fill the bottom of the box with sawdust or newspaper shavings, which act as absorbents for any animal droppings. You can ventilate the inside of the box by making a few holes in it.
Once closed, leave the box in a quiet place, protected from the sun or rain, and call the emergency numbers: 112, Guardia Civil, Local Police, Red Cross, Civil Protection, or the Environmental Department.
Do not give any water or food.

Gáldar is celebrating the third Animal Welfare Day this Saturday. From 09:30 to 13:30 in the Plaza de Santiago, the event will turn the historic centre of the city into a space for awareness, responsible adoption, and entertainment for pets and their families.
Following the resounding success of the previous two editions, which brought together hundreds of residents, visitors, and their pets in a festive and engaging atmosphere, this new event reinforces its commitment to education, responsibility, and respect for animals. The program includes activities for all ages, from children’s workshops and dog demonstrations to specialized talks on the protection of the Cory’s shearwater, a native species of the Canary Islands.
One of the central focuses will be responsible adoption, with the participation of several animal shelters and associations. There will be a meeting point to present dogs and cats looking for homes. At the same time, there will be demonstrations of dog training and skills, emphasizing positive reinforcement and understanding animal behaviour.
The youngest attendees will have a dedicated space for fun and educational workshops that promote values such as respect, empathy, and care for animals from an early age. The day also includes an informational and awareness-raising session on the protection of Cory’s shearwater chicks. In addition, technical and informative talks will be given on responsible pet ownership, veterinary first aid, nutrition, and overall pet well-being, aimed at owners, prospective adopters, and the general public.
The initiative is complemented by a solidarity campaign to support the work of local animal shelters, inviting the public to contribute donations of food, veterinary supplies, or hygiene products. The event features the participation of some twenty organizations committed to animal welfare, including animal welfare associations, veterinary clinics, companies in the sector, and community groups. It’s an unmissable event for those who believe that a more just society begins with the way it treats its animals.
