Las Palmas host the champion League semi-finalist Atletico Madrid. After another disappointing away defeat the previous Wednesday night, losing 3-0 at Leganes, the home side will need a much better performance against this very good side.
The visitors start off very lively and Varas produces a good save in the home goal. He couldn’t do anything a minute later when a good attacking move down the left wing, the ball played into the box and Gamerio, is left unmarked and finishes in the top corner. 1-0 down within 2 mins, not the start the home side were looking for.
More good play from Atletico with Griezmann looking very dangerous.
On 17mins, Atletico win a corner on the right, Niguez is left unmarked in the box and scores with a good header. A minute later Atletico make it 3. A ball down the centre of the pitch, finds Gameiro, who finishes in the top corner with a well taken shot.
23,570 fans are left looking shocked; the home side are being totally out played.
On 25mins, the LP finally manage a attempt on goal. Good work by the lively Halilovic sets up Castellano on the edge of the box, but his shot is easily saved.
Some good sportsmanship from Griezmann, after Macedo slips and hurts his knee, puts the ball out of play rather than attacking, even when he was in a good position. The home crowd really appreciated that.
Half Time = Las Palmas 0 Atletico Madrid 3
The HalfTime Verdict – Totally outplayed in the first 20mins and some great finishing leaves LP with a massive uphill battle to get back into this match. The home side only managing a couple of ½ chances. Atletico look far too strong for the home side.
Atletico starts the 2nd half where they left off, on the attack. Griezmann finds Gameiro in the box but his shot hits the post. He was unlucky not to get his hat trick then. Good play by LP, Halilovic, gets his shot in but it’s well saved.
With Atletico playing against Real Madrid in the champions League semi-final this Tuesday night, they make a few substitutes and give their key men some rest. The lively looking sub, Thomas on the right wing, plays a good one-two and then follows it up with a lovely finish in the bottom corner. 4-0 to Madrid.
With the home fans making their way to the exits, former Liverpool favourite Torres finishes off another good move to make it 5-0.
Final Score – Las Palmas 0 Atletico Madrid 5.
Verdict of The Saint – Atletico were just too strong for this poor looking home side.
They killed the game off within 20mins and the home side just couldn’t get going.
After the announcement manager Quique Setien will be leaving the club at the end of the season, LP have seen a massive drop in form and the players are losing confidence each week.
The defense are leaking goals for fun and it’s lucky that they had a good start of the season or else they could have been in trouble at the bottom of the table.
Last home game of the season is on the 14th May against the mighty Barça. With the Catalan club going for the league title, Las Palmas need to put in a much improved performance or the scoreline could be a lot worse.
