The Canary Weekend Tips 17-19 February

It’s a perfect Carnival weekend ahead, though there is a small chance of rain on Sunday afternoon in the north. A frenzy of festivities are planned in Las Palmas, Ingenio, Agüimes, Gáldar and in Mogán so plenty to choose from, particularly by way of Carnival events. There are also markets and a lovely new event happening in El Tablero on Saturday.  What are your favourites from this weekend’s highlights on Gran Canaria?

Friday 17 February, Mogán 

Mercadillo Municipal 

The Friday municipal market from 09:00-15:30 in Puerto de Mogán. A lovely day out to visit our very own “Little Venice” and check the fine array of produce, and other assorted items, on offer direct from producers and professional traders.

17-19 February, Las Palmas

Carnival Las Palmas

On Friday, Adult Comparsa contest is all feathers, glitter and sequins to the rhythm of the Batucadas that identify the night of the comparsas. (Thing intense Samba, with a more African drum feel, and very colourful routines) Starting at 21:00 on the stage in Parque Santa Catalina, these dance groups reflect the essence of Carnival as much for the spectacular of costumes and choreographies as for their relation with music, rhythm and dance. Afterwards you can party the night away, Carnival style at the back of the Elder and Miller buildings and Plaza de Canarias until 04:30

Vegueta day carnival in 2016

On Saturday its day time Carnival fiesta time starting at 12:00 in the historic old town centre, Vegueta. The Streets will be filled with mascaritas in this sixth edition of this day time party in the beautiful old town district, Vegueta.

Also the re-scheduled Childrens fiesta from last weekend, postponed due to rain, is happening on Saturday in Plaza de Santa Ana starting at 11:00.

In the evening the popular Murgas competition at 21:oo on the stage and Carnival night party for those whose energy keeps on going …

On Sunday, the ever adorable Canine Carnival at 12:00 on stage in Parque Santa Catalina.

Day time Carnival in Santa Cantalina starts at 12:00 and in the Evening the Children’s Queens gala starts at 19:00 on the stage in Parque Santa Catalina

17-19 February, Ingenio 

Carnival Ingenio, theme: Venice

Ingenio begins their Carnival festivities this weekend.  If you want to see more of what’s happening in Ingenio during Carnival you can find their full program here.

On Friday, The Drag Gala, on at Plaza de La Candelaria

On Sunday, pets are protagonists for the day with the second edition of Ingenio’s very own Animal Carnival  (cats 12:00-12:30 and dogs 13:00-14:00), the event runs from 11:00-16:00 at Plaza de La Candelaria, with the collaboration of legitimate local animal associations and volunteers from the official local animal shelter, CETA GES de Ingenio.

17-19 February , Gáldar

Carnival in Gáldar, theme:  dedicated to Africa, the great continent

Gáldar start their Carnival celebrations on Friday too. All main events in Gáldar are concentrated in Plaza de Santiago. To see more what’s happening in Gáldar during the Carnival you can see the full program here

18-19 February, Agüimes 

Carnival Agüimes, theme : Carnaval de profesiones / Carnival of professions

Agüimes start their Carnival on Saturday at 12:00 in Plaza del Rosario with music groups taking to the streets around the plaza. At 21:00 the inauguration parade from the parking lot of the municipal swimming pool. 21:30 the pregón and opening party continues throughout the night until 05:00 at Plaza de Rosario.

On Sunday, there is a Children play park at Plaza del Rosario from 11:30-14:30

Saturday 18 February, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, El Tablero 

‘Vamos al huerto’ (‘Let’s go to the garden’ )

A nice new event happening on Saturday in El Tablero at the main plaza in front of the church. From 09:00-14:00 enjoy live music, children’s entertainment, exhibits and a sale of agricultural products, cheese tastings and workshops and show cooking.

An initiative organised by the City of San Bartolomé de Tirajana which has funding from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Handicraft of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.


Saturday 18 February, Mogán

Carnaval de Barrios de Mogán 2017 , El Horno

Neighbourhood Carnivals start the festivities in the municipal of Mogán. First one is at Plaza Centro Socio Cultural in El Horno from 17:00 onwards  (barranco de Arguineguín, GC-505) this Saturday, followed by Motor Grande, Barranquillos Sorua & Andres and Filipinas

Children’s costume fiesta with some tasty Carnival treats, animation, games, and a minidisco!

Saturday 18 February, Playa de Mogán

Carnaval de Barrios de Mogán 2017 , Playa de Mogán

Starting at 21:00 with Batucada group ‘Samba DA ILHA’, kicks off with rhythmic carnival salsa drumming, music and comparsa group ‘Kisamba’, some amazing dancers in their costumes celebrate around the streets, leaving from the municipal gym. Followed by a Carnival party at Plaza De. Pedro Betancor León.

Sunday 18 February, Mogán, Puerto Rico 

Mercadillo Agrícola y Artesanal 

Every fortnight, on a Sunday, in an ideal setting surrounded by palm trees and greenery, a little canarian music playing in the backround, the Farmers’ and craft market is on from 08:30-14:30 in Parque urbano in Puerto Rico. Just a few steps away from the main bus stop, if you are coming from out of town.
