The Canary Events highlights July 2017

After the San Juan celebrations, with the most amazing midsummer weather, there are plenty of events and festivities to enjoy during the summer month of July 2017.  Here are some of our favourites; handpicked events for the month ahead.

A local bank holiday in the municipality San Bartolomé de Tirajana and in the municipality of Gáldar in July on Gran Canaria is 25.7 both celebrating the festivities in honour of St James the Apostle, watch out for the pilgrims following the 70km or so of the Camino Santiago across the island between the two towns.

Every Saturday there will be multiple pilgrimage offerings, ‘Romerias’ celebrated within the festivities of the various patron saints of towns and villages around the Island. Starting with the Apricot festival in Fataga just 20 minutes from Maspalomas in the heartland of the south, the very hectic Romeria and patron saint celebration fiesta season will go on throughout July, August and September all around the island. We will try to ad as many to our weekend tips as we can find in time.

25 June – 2 July, Fataga, San Bartolome de Tirajana  
Fiestas del Albaricoque

Apricot fair in the picturesque village of Fataga, with the main day being on Saturday 1 July, Romeria, the pilgrimage offering starting at 19:30

Global bus number 18 will get you to Fataga from Maspalomas

Well worth a visit into the traditional harvest celebrations not far from the main tourist zones

 


30 June – 9 July, Las Palmas
Big Bang Vintage Festival 

The festival of culture from 40’s, 50’s and 60’s with music, movies, and fashion
The main festival is on Friday, July 7th at Pueblo Canario,with national and international concerts (Rockabilly, Rock’n’Roll, Swing, Swing, Blues, Beat, Garage , DJ sessions on vinyl, burlesque cabaret, a vintage market, art exhibitions, themed talks, hairdressing, tattoos, retro dance workshops, competitions, food trucks, children’s workshops and a long list of activities aimed at all lovers of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.

Traiña Trail Spar Mogán

Night time mountain race with the starting point in Arguineguin on Las Marañuelas beach. Event starting at 17:00 with many distances to the main 24 km circuit.

 


6 July – 5 August 
Temudas Festival

The 21st edition of this unique Theatre, Music and Dance festival is the meeting point for various world class artists.

Just over 4 weeks of programming and many performances among which there will be family theatre, street theatre, opera, circus, aerobatics, dance and music.

There are many free outdoor performances for the public during the festival in Plaza de Santa Ana and Plaza del Pilar Nuevo in Las Palmas.

7 July – 16 July, Arguineguin, Mogán
Fiestas Virgen del Carmen, Arguineguin

Fiesta del Carmen is one of the most hotly anticipated celebrations of the year, particularly on The Canary Islands and in the south of Gran Canaria, as Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen – St. Mary of Mount Carmel,) is the patron saint of sailors.

The official religious feast day is on Sunday 16th of July, and pretty much every coastal town celebrates, with traditional processions and offerings.

On Gran Canaria, one of the most spectacular events is the Maritime Procession which sees a huge flotilla of fishing boats, leisure boats and even tourist ferries, accompany a statue of Maria del Carmen on a journey from Arguineguín to Playa de Mogán, with festivities during the days either side of the main event. Well worth getting yourself onto any one of the main ferry boats and enjoying a delightful day travelling along the Costa Mogán.

Saturday 15 July, Bajada de la rama , lowering the branch procession (pre-hispanic water celebration)
Sunday 16 July, Day of the virgin of the carmen and the maritime procession Arguineguin – Puerto de Mogan – Arguineguin

7 July – 23 July, Las Palmas  
Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & más Heineken

The 26th edition of the Jazz festival is happening at the same time on several Canary Islands. As well as performances and clubs night on Gran Canaria there are also free public outside concerts happening.

In Las Palmas at Plaza del Pilar on Friday 7 July @20:30 , in Plaza de Santa Ana on 20 July @ 21:00, 21 July @ 21:00 and 22 July@ 21:00.

Other free outdoor concerts at Plaza de San Rafael in Vecindario on 15 July 21:00
and in Parque municipal de Santa Brigida on 16 July at 21:00

7 July – 27 July, Teror 
Fiesta de Aqua 

Water Festival, the most outstanding festival in the municipality after the Fiesta del Pino, offers a wide program of traditional and cultural events until the end of July, where the highlights are the Romería pilgrimage offering and fireworks ( 15 July ), Beer Fest ( 6-9 July ) Handicraft Fair ( 8-9 July), Local Livestock Fair ( 16 July ).

And in the musical field the XXIII Latin Festival Villa de Teror  ( 17-20 July and 21 July ) and the VI International Festival of Saxophone and Jazz ( 24-28 July ) See the full program here.

15 July Romeria, the pilgrimage of Water, “the Little Pine”, in honour to San Isidro Labrador, from Castañero Gordo to Plaza de Sintes, starting at 18:30 


Saturday 8 July, El Talbero, San Bartolome de Tirajana
Feria de Cervezas

Canarian artisan beer festival on the main square in El Tablero, just in front of the church.

The town hall in its summer program, organizes the Second Edition of the “Sueño de una Noche de Verano“, which this year includes the Canarian Artisan Beer Fair El Tablero.

This event is unique for a summer afternoon in the southern municipality and combines  high quality produce, such as artisanal beer, with a warm summer afternoon music by Playacoco, Ochentour and Batucada.

All this makes this event the perfect combination for all to enjoy an unparalleled afternoon-evening. So, starting at 18:00 on 8 July a very good reason to visit this charismatic neighbourhood in the south of Gran Canaria with good beers, good music and great company,


8 July – 16 July 
Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival

Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival, PWA World Tour Windsurfing Gran Canaria in Pozo Izquierdo beach. With the best of the best in the world present for the competition, the event also features workshops, children’s activities, beach cleaning, live music, the best dj’s and other great surprises. Main hub and nerve centre will be the 700 square meter tent installed on the beach.

Pozo Izquierdo, a beach that offers its visitors the most radical conditions on the planet. Gusts of wind that surpass 60 knots of wind (more than 110 km / h) and waves of three meters, make the event on Gran Canaria the most extreme of those that make up the PWA calendar.

Saturday 22 July, Mogan 
11ª Travesía a Nado Playa de Mogán

11th edition of the swimming competition in Playa de Mogán. The crossing of 1,200 meters will start at 11:00 from Taurito beach towards Playa de Mogán.


28 July – 30 July, San Bartolome de Tirajana
Maspalomas Costa Canaria Soul Festival

The 3rd edition of Maspalomas Soul festival literally on the beach of San Agustin. This amazing new edition to the summer program of the southern heartland has already been a huge success from the beginning. This year is themed, dedicated to Rufus Thomas, to commemorate the 100 years since his birth.

The event has been declared of local tourist interest.
