Searching for patera south of Gran Canaria

A Salvamento Marítimo (Maritime Rescue) Sasemar 103 aircraft and a rescue boat, the Guardamar Talía, are searching for a patera (open boat) thought to have 62 sub-Saharan migrants on board, known to have departed from Western Sahara on Sunday morning, heading in the direction of Gran Canaria.

Travelling in the patera, in addition to two children, are 21 women and 39 men all assumed to be on board.

The plane and the search boat began their quest late yesterday, after having been alerted by the Guardia Civil and by the NGO “Caminando Fronteras” that the vessel had left from the coast of Dakhla on Sunday morning
