Return of The Saint: Las Palmas V Atletico Madrid

First home game of the new season brought Atl Madrid to the Canary Islands. Madrid finished in 3rd place last season compared to the home side who finished 14th. Last season Madrid ran out 5-0 winners in a poor display by the home team.

Las Palmas have brought in some fresh players over the summer, a much needed new goalkeeper Chichizola, Calleri from West Ham and they manged to get Spanish international Vitolo on loan until January.  But they have lost 3 of their most influential players, Mesa leaving for Swansea, Jese joining Stoke City and in my opinion probably the biggest loss to the team is Prince Boetang who is going back to Germany.  3 very important players from last season.

After losing away to Valencia last Friday night LP need to start well but inside the first 2 mins they find themselves behind.

Neat play by Madrid sets up Correa who slots one home into the bottom corner.

Things get even worse for the home side as 2 mins later Yannick Carrasco finds himself in space and again finds the back of the net. 0-2 down!!!

LP finally get into the game and win their first corner.  Good work by Viera sets up Calleri but his first touch is poor and the chance gets wasted.

LP begin to find their passing game, and Viera shoots just over.

Madrid gets a good break away but the cross gets deflected away to safety though they have players unmarked in the box.

And just before halftime Lemos sees a long range free kick go just over the bar..

The Saint’s First Half Verdict – After a disastrous start to the match and going 2-0 down in just 5mins, LP came back into the match, late on, but looked again weak upfront. New man Calleri is struggling against an experience defence. I hope the comments from my West Ham mates aren’t true, as they and most West Ham fans don’t rate him from last season as he struggled in the Premiership.

Lively start to the 2nd half with both sides looking to attack. On 57mins, good work by Mono and Viera down the left and a great cross by Mono finds Calleri who puts his powerful header past the keeper, 1-2 – Game On!!!  (He didn’t do that for West Ham!!)

Unfortunately it doesn’t last long, LP lose the ball in midfield, then fail to clear a cross and the ball is curled home from 20yards by Spanish International Koke. 1-3

On 74mins, more poor defending by the home team, Castellano gives the ball away and Koke again slots home an acrobatic volley, 1-4.

79mins LP have another chance to get back into the game as they win a penalty. But Viera sees his side foot shot saved. On 84mins good work by Simon, pulls the ball back but Viera overshoots.

In the closing mins of the game, man of the match Partey for Madrid curls his shot from the outside of the box into the bottom corner, 1-5.

Final Score – Las Palmas 1 Atl. Madrid 5

The Saint’s Verdict – A disastrous start to the match left LP with an uphill battle. They came back well in the second half but some very poor defending gave 2 more goals away. LP need some more attacking options or I can see this season being a struggle. The 20,384 crowd will be hoping for an improvement in the coming weeks.

Next home game – September 17th Athletic Bilbao – 17.30 KO.
