It’s time for those 12 grapes again, a mix of tradition and superstition in Spain. Eat one grape for every chime leading to the stroke of midnight for luck in the new year.
You will find ready packs in supermarkets and grape sales going through the roof. A very festive weekend with celebrations, parties, concerts, fireworks and then some in true Gran Canaria fiesta style.
New Year celebrations will be happening in most bars, restaurants, and hotels. Las Palmas is putting on a double firework show and there is a lovely concert happening on the 1st of January at the Dunes of Maspalomas Costa Canaria viewpoint behind the Hotel Riu Maspalomas.
Here (below) are just some of our highlights from the various free and community events occurring around the island, a major crowd gather in most places to go and celebrate the New Year festivities.
Worried about visiting the capital and getting home again? Global have several busses that run through the night. North – south the number 5 runs all night and the number 1 leaves at 0454 from Las Palmas to arrive 2 hours later in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria.. there are a few others listed New Year’s celebrations. As part of the town hall’s Christmas program, activities are planned this Friday.
In Playa de Mogán at Plaza Gañanias activities for children with workshops, bouncy castles and much more between 11:00-18:00
In Arguineguín at Plaza Pérez Galdós, a children’s musical “Un sombrero para Navidad” ( “A hat for Christmas”) starting at 19:00
“Party-Gala de fin de año”
As part of town hall’s events, aimed primarily at the youngest in the family, on Friday the “Party-Gala New Year”. Shows with Disney characters, performance artists, inflatables, a mechanical bull, and a lot of other activities in Plaza de Sintes, from 17:30-21:00
“Noche de Navidad”
This Friday in Gáldar’s center a ‘Christmas night’ event, from 17:30 until 03:00, with workshops, magic shows, clowns, as well a parade. Many concerts, activities for all ages and the museums are open until very late to enjoy.
The event was re-scheduled due to bad weather last weekend. 17:30-03:00.
At 19:30, the traditional Children’s parade with Royal pages accompanied by floats, music bands, Disney characters and papagüevos ( big papier-maché dolls ) touring the main streets.
At 22:00 A concert from Gospel choir Star D
Live music, ringing bells and fireworks! This year the main show will take place at Plaza de Canarias – next to Parque Santa Catalina starting at 23:30. Onstage bands and DJ’s to entertain until 04:30 encouraging the public to gather around the port to bid farewell to 2016 and welcome the new year with a big digital clock countdown and the a HUGE 25 minute fireworks spectacle.
The second fireworks show that evening (12 minutes) will be the traditional one on Las Canteras beach at La Puntilla (the end where the sand nativity scene is)
One lovely place to be for New Year’s eve daytime celebrations will be Vegueta, the old town of Las Palmas, where the festivities start at midday and continue throughout the day until late.
HPS San Silvestre
HPS San Silvestre charity run competition will this year exceed 10,0000 participants.
The Las Palmas charity race celebrates its 15th year and has been included in the annual calendar of Major Events on Gran Canaria.
The 6 km route will start and finish on calle León y Castillo, at the Parque Romano.
The children’s race will take place at 16.00 and the adult race starts at 17.00h

The town hall of San Bartolomé de Tirajana bids farewell to 2016 with a (FREE) New Year’s Eve Party on the 31st at the Covered Skating Rink (near the stadium) of San Fernando de Maspalomas, followed the next day by a welcoming you to 2017 with a new New Year’s Concert presented at sunset as the first day of the new year darkens.
For fireworks, Meloneras and the Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse area are always a sure bet to see some great light shows as the various hotels try to out do each other with fireworks by the ocean.
New Year’s Eve Party, at the Skate Rink in San Fernando, from 23:30 until 06:00. Enlivened by 3 of the best local Djs and pumping out 20,000 watts of sounds as well as spectacular led lighting with giant screens and special effects.

The end of the year will be celebrated in Mogán at several points around the municipality.
In Arguineguín at the tent installed in Plaza Pérez Galdós performances feature at midnight from Güira Latina, Carácter Latino and the DJ’s Josué Garrido, Aitor Gruz y Samu.
Playa de Mogán in Plaza Doctor Pedro Betancor León and party will be animated by Yony and Aya and DJ Javier.
Pueblo de Mogán Casco, the party will count on Güira Latina, Carácter Latino and the DJ Juanjo.
For fireworks in Arguineguín, places facing Anfi del Mar and the various beach hotels. In Puerto Rico, the higher up you are the better the views you have down to the beach and harbour. Shopping centers in Puerto Rico will be good places for some entertainment to welcome in the new year.
The big party in Santa Lucía is once again in La Karpa from 0:30–6:30. One of the biggest on the island with 5500 tickets for sale for just €5. All night partying with DJ’s Promaster and Dany Masakoy. Only for adults +18

New Year’s eve party in Plaza del Pino from 23:30-05:00. Live music from DJ Ulises Acosta and band Última Llave. and a chance to say farewell with the balls of the Basilica del Pino.
The New Year’s concert by Olga Cerpa and Mestisay on Sunday starting at 18:30 at Las Dunas de Maspalomas Viewpoint, behind Hotel Riu Maspalomas. A unique event, with lovely music at dusk and night falling, acoustic music without stage, the premiere of 8 new songs from their next album. Free entry, limited places.
