Jimmy Breaks appears in court charged with alleged assault on a member of Guardia Cvil, pleads not guilty

Sources close to this tragic incident have informed us that Spanish daily La Provincia, seem to have joined in the chorus of misreporting around this case. We are amending our article to reflect new information received, including key points:

  • – Jimmy Breaks has not at this moment been charged with allegedly assaulting Donna C, and so has not yet entered a plea, pending the recommendations of the coroner, when the police will decide if there is a case to answer. At this time neither the autopsy results nor the forensic report have been received, and so no charges can yet be made regarding the sequence of events, or their consequences.
  • – A charge has been made regarding alleged assault on a member of the Guardia Civil who was trying to arrest Mr Breaks, to which he has plead not guilty
  • – Donna was not his partner, according to our source, and never has been, though she did work for Jimmy at a bar he owned some years ago, and more recently he did allow her to live with him at his apartment as an informal flat share.
  • – Jimmy Breaks has only been married twice
  • – He was born March 25 1937, making him 80 years of age

British ex-professional wrestling star, Jim Breaks, 80, was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning suspected of having assaulted one Donna Cowley, 47, at his Puerto Rico apartment.  Spanish daily newspaper La Provincia has reported and that the accused has admitted the assault in court over the weekend, going on to suggest that physical clashes had been relatively frequent between the two. Donna died several hours after the alleged fight, having been admitted to the Insular Hospital in Las Palmas.

Our sources, intimate with the case, tell us that he can in no way have entered a plea for an assault on Ms Cowley, as no charges regarding her or her subsequent death have yet been made.  The only allegation so far is for alleged assault on a member of the Guardia Civil who arrested Mr Breaks, for which the accused has entered a plea of Not Guilty.

He and Donna had shared the address but, according to Breaks, they were not in a relationship, but she took care of him because of his age. Judicial authorities initially hesitated over whether to handle the case as gender violence. Now La Provincia is reporting that In the face of the evidence presented, the judge has decided to treat it as such and has remanded Breaks to the Salto del Negro prison as alleged perpetrator of a homicide.

While it is true that Mr Breaks has been remanded to Salto del Negro jail, we have seen no evidence of this being a case of “Gender Violence”, particularly as there seems to be no history of anything similar having happened

UK Tabloid The Sun newspaper has reported “relatives” stating that at some point the two had had a romantic relationship, but they were not together now. Breaks stated in court that this was not the first time that an argument had taken place between them, claiming, said La Provincia, that Ms Cowley could be quite burly. After an alleged altercation between them on Thursday night, it was reportedly Donna herself who called the emergency services claiming that she had been assaulted.

Policia Local were the first to appear at their Bahía Azul apartment owned by Breaks. He was, say police, found sitting on the couch and calmly watching television; Ms Cowley was conscious and in the bathroom cleaning blood from injuries, police supposed were caused by blows inflicted by Mr Breaks. Police attended Ms Cowley first, reporting the incident to the main 112 Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (Cecoes 112) to mobilise an ambulance. They also made the Guardia Civil aware of an alleged assault, who then proceeded to arrest Breaks, who is accused of having actively resisted the agents trying to detain him.

Donna Cowley was taken first to the Arguineguín health centre and then referred to the Insular Hospital in the capital of Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, her wounds, however, did not seem to be life-threatening when she was admitted to the hospital. Some hours later, however, she passed away from a heart attack while the doctors were running tests to confirm the seriousness of her injuries.

What had been an assault case up until that point then became a suspected homicide.

Spanish government Minister of Health, Social Services and Equality, Dolors Montserrat, on Sunday, through her personal Twitter account, expressed  her “full condemnation” of the murder of this British citizen, according to Spanish news agency Efe. Montserrat conveyed her condolences to the family and friends of the victim, denouncing the murder as the thirty-second gender violence related death so far this year, the third to have occurred on the Islands.

Breaks arrived more than two decades ago on Gran Canaria after a successful sporting career, spanning more than thirty years winning national and international titles. News reached his hometown, Bradford, on Saturday as UK tabloids scrambled to get comments from people who might have known Jimmy, and where the Telegraph & Argus local newspaper reported Breaks’ friends to be ‘shell shocked’ by his arrest as the alleged perpetrator of a homicide, stating that he had been married three times.
