La Alcaldesa Bueno Secures Incredible Majority in Mogán

Mogán, May 29, 2023 – The often controversial incumbent, O Bueno, La Alcaldesa, has achieved an unprecedented and resounding victory once more in Mogán. The candidate who switched her party’s name, for these elections, to “Juntos por Mogán”, a local ally of the regionalist conservatives “Coalición Canaria” (CC), will once again assume the role of mayor. Her party has clinched a rather noteworthy 17 out of the 21 seats in the Municipal Council of this popular tourism destination located on the sunny southwest of Gran Canaria.

What an interesting last weekend of May ahead. Weather predictions are showing some rain showers are likely across Gran Canaria. There’ll be some gorgeous Patron Saints’ festivities happening in San Fernando de Maspalomas as well as in Valleseco.

Valleseco literally means “dry valley” in Spanish, but is actually one of the wettest municipalities Gran Canaria. Nestling between the famous fresh water sources of Firgas & Teror, half way up the island’s mountainous northern slopes, this area is well known for its apple growers, cider and its weekly market

Six weeks since the unexplained disappearance of Anna-Karin on Gran Canaria

The authorities on Gran Canaria have been engaged in a rigorous search for Swedish tourist Anna-Karin Bengtsson, who went missing in the south of Gran Canaria around April 9. Her unexplained disappearance has caused her family much distress, with no clues to her whereabouts having emerged in the six weeks since they first realised her phone was no longer functioning.

An exciting May weekend ahead with abundant events and festivities taking place all around Gran Canaria. There are Patron Saints’ festivities for Motor Grande, in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, and in El Tablero in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and up in the mountains of Artenara. There is also a two day lively exhibition event in Meloneras boulevard and the Rally Gran Canaria is held this Friday and Saturday.

2019 Netflix series ‘The Witcher’ shot on location on Gran Canaria 

The filming of the international Netflix series ‘The Witcher’, which will debut in 2019, has taken place on Gran Canaria. For nine days the production shot at emblematic spots around the island including Maspalomas, Roque Nublo, Cuevas Blancas, Tamadaba and Agaete.
Starring the Henry Cavill the series is based on a series of fantastic novels by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and this first season will feature eight episodes in which the island will feature heavily.

Producer Simon Emmanuel previously visited Gran Canaria to film part of the feature film ‘Fast & Furious 6′, and has returned to continue the relationship with the island due to the enormous possibilities offered by its landscapes along with the facilities for location shoots on the island.
The filming of this series joins a Scandinavian television series that begins shooting this week, and another series of Finnish-German co-production that is in the very advanced preproduction phase and will be shot in April.
In ‘The Witcher’, Cavill plays the sorcerer Geralt de Rivia, “a genetically modified monster hunter who seeks his place in a world where humans often prove to be worse than beasts,” according to the Netflix synopsis.
The cast of this first season include Freya Allen, Anya Cholatra, Eamon Farren, Joey Batey, Lars Mikkelsen, Royce Pierreson, Maciej Musial, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte and Anna Shaffer.

Newsbrief: Gran Canaria will host the filming of six feature films before the summer

The exotic sub-tropical island of Gran Canaria will host six feature film productions before the summe the president of the Cabildo, Antonio Morales, has announced during his visit to the set of the Spanish film ‘Mirage‘ together with the Spanish Government´s delegate to the Canary Islands, Mercedes Roldós, and the general director of Cultural Promotion of the Canarian Government, Aurora Moreno. , Two of the planned productions will be by film companies based in The Canaries, two national producers from Spain and still two more international film companies coming to shoot on the island.
The shoots add to an ever growing and prestigious list of film productions filmed on location in Gran Canaria including recent releases: The Titan (Sam Worthington, Taylor Schilling and Tom Wilkinson), World War II adventure Allied (Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard) and comedy romp Wild Oats (Demi Moore, Jessica Lange, Shirley MacLaine, and Billy Connolly) which add to the ever growing litany of top films being shot in the archipelago
