The Canary Guide Día de Canarias #WeekendTips 26-28 May 2023

What an interesting last weekend of May ahead. Weather predictions are showing some rain showers are likely across Gran Canaria. This extended #WeekendTips covers up to Tuesday, when all things Canarian are celebrated on the Día de Canarias. There’ll be some gorgeous Patron Saints’ festivities happening in San Fernando de Maspalomas as well as in Valleseco.

Fun Fact:
Valleseco literally means “dry valley” in Spanish, but is actually one of the wettest municipalities Gran Canaria. Nestling between the famous fresh water sources of Firgas & Teror, half way up the island’s mountainous northern slopes, this area is well known for its apple growers, cider and its weekly market

Work begins on the new shopping centre in Puerto Rico after town hall approves license

The Local Government Board of Mogán granted the urban development license on Tuesday 10 April, to the “Comunidad de Bienes Mogán Mall” for the construction of the long awaited new shopping centre in Puerto Rico. The council will receive more than 1 million euros, to assist the Costa de Mogán Modernization, Improvement and Increase of Competitiveness Plan.
The new shopping centre is to be built on the plot where the long defunct and abandoned Atlántida water park was located, on Avenida Tomás Roca Bosch, 9.  Clearance work has already begun at the site.
The new commercial centre in Puerto Rico will bring an investment of €35 million to the southern municipality of Mogán, along with further transformation and additional leisure facilities to the popular tourist town of Puerto Rico. New businesses and numerous jobs are planned, resulting in just over an expected 1 million additional euros in capital gains for the municipal coffers.
“With this new work, the rehabilitation of the current Shopping Centre and the renovation of accommodation facilities, Puerto Rico is to be transformed in a brief time and be renewed as the mature destination that it is”, stated the Mayor of Mogán in a statement.
In addition to the granting of the urban development license, the Local Government Board of Mogán approved the calculation of the capital gains, for the amount of €1,006,833.98, which the town hall will receive as a result of the project, along with the provisional liquidation of the Building, Installation and Works Tax (ICIO) for €364,000.
The municipal license specifies that the works begin within a maximum period of two years and must be completed within a maximum period of 4 years, counted from the initiation of the agreement.
Today porta cabins, JCBs and workmen in hard hats and hi viz were on site to prepare the ground.
