It’s the first weekend of May, the month of growing named for Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility. Gardens are blooming, birds chirping and Summer is truly just around the corner.

This weekend has so much to offer when it comes to places to visit and a multitude of festivities and events to explore.

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates of the year each country and in Spain 2019, it is this Sunday, 5th of May.

The Canary Islands are a starlight destination and the eta Aquarids meteor shower will peak on 6-7 May, so do take a moment to enjoy this beautiful sight.


2-4 May, Gran Canaria The 43th Rally Islas Canarias

A total of 115 teams will be competing on the island including the current leaders of the FIA European Rally Championship. This is the biggest rally event on the Islands and it will also cause some major road closures for the duration of the stages around various parts of the north of Gran Canaria. Road closures start 1,5 h before the beginning of each leg. Check for more info at the bottom of this article.

The main hub of the race will be in Las Palmas, Parque Santa Catalina, and from Thursday at 20:30 the ceremonial start kicks things off with the the qualifying stages having been held earlier in the day around Valsequillo, Lomo Magullo. On Friday, the race stages take in Valsequillo, San Mateo, Tejeda, be prepared for road closures. On Saturday, Arucas, Moya, Galdar, Valleseco will see all the action.

3-5 May, Santa Lucia
International Street Theatre Festival – Sal Pa ‘Out 2019 –

Throughout the weekend, street theatre to be enjoyed in the Pedestrian area of Avenida de Canarias in Vecindario.

On Friday from 19.30 a street parade launches the festival (from the north end to Plaza de Los Algodoneros)  with La Charanguita ‘Los Amigos’

On Saturday, “La Calle de La Risa“, “The Street of Laughter” between 11:00-13:00 with Rafaelillo Clown, Chan Chan Pimienta, Kaleido Zirkus on the pedestrian area of Avda Canarias.
At 13:00 Karcocha clown spectacle.
Between 17:30-20:00 Multi Adventures, including bouncy castles, face painting and music.
At 18:00 A lively little Street parade and animation.
At 18:45 Music at Plaza de Los Algodoneros
19:00  “Laughter, Music and Rock&Roll”-show.
At 21:00 Street Theater spectacle -“The Power of Time”  Plaza de los Algodoneros followed by a concert at 22:00

On Sunday, a lively little street parade at 11:00 and at 12:00 Clin Clon Clown show and at 13:00 “La Jungla show by Clown Rafaelillo.


3-5 May, Las Palmas Summerland – Gran Canaria Moda Calida

SummerLand” combines swimwear and beachwear fashion catwalks from Gran Canaria Moda Cálida with the rhythm of live music at Las Canteras,  a score of designers will exhibit and sell their creations and there will also be a gastronomic area throughout the weekend.

On Friday, Live the Summer starts at 12:00 with the opening of the commercial and gastronomic area , while a parade sponsored by Heineken will move to the rhythm of the music played by Mario Vaquerizo.

Later, in the evening at 20:30, the creations of 14 signature designers of Gran Canaria Moda Cálida will make a hot fashion show.

On Saturday at 12:30, the children’s catwalk sponsored by the Siete Palmas Shopping Centre with LadyBug’s Cris, Teen Store of El Corte Ingles and Koku Kids , and at 18.30 there will be a fashion show of other local companies of beach accessories .

The fashion market will be open on Friday and Saturday from 12:00-20:30 and Sunday until 18:00 The gastronomic area is open from 12:00-00:00 and on Sunday until 18:00.


3-5 May, CC Yumbo, Maspalomas
Maspalomas Pride

Every night free shows and galas at the famous Shopping centre Yumbo, in the heart of Playa del Inglés and up on the stage of the main square . Starting from 22:00 every night.

On Friday, the opening Gala.

On Saturday it’s “Tributes Night” and on Sunday ” Made in Canarias Gala”.

All events are free.  The organisers claim a quarter of a million people are expected to attend over the next week!…


4-5 May, Artenara Descubre Artenara

The highest village on the island and also one of the oldest are showcasing their best, with the 3rd edition of “Discover Artenara 2019” a fair that will take place on Saturday and Sunday. It will be a meeting point between crafts, traditions, gastronomy, farm animals, pottery workshops, live music, wine tastings, cheese making and everything that Artenara has to offer. A perfect day for the whole family.

4-5 May, Teror
Fiesta de San José y la Santa Cruz

Teror is celebrating the Feast of Saint Joseph and the Holy Cross and this weekend, the main festivities.

On Saturday, the “carpenters’ festival” centres around the Burning of the Boat and the Castle, a show in Plaza de Sintes, which recalls the pirate attacks on the island of the past.

This tradition has been maintained for almost a century from generation to generation thanks to the family of Benjamín Dávila.

In recent years, with the collaboration of the Town Council of Teror the town have continued this spectacle. The Burning of the Boat and the Castle will be preceded by the concert of La Trova and their  ’15 Anniversary’ show, starting at 21:00.

After a pyrotechnic display, the night will close with the concert of the very famous Cristina Ramos, at 23:00 and later a Verbena de La Cruz by the Furia Joven orchestra, at Alameda Pío XII, starting 00:30

On Sunday, the main day of the Feast of the Cross, with a Mass in the Basilica, at 12:00 and then the procession of San José and Santa Cruz, starting at 13:00.


4-5 May, Gran Canaria “Museums Weekend” Museos en finde

The history of Gran Canaria is put on display in an extensive network of museums where the thousands of ingredients that made the island a conclave of diverse cultures are all mixed together.

Pre-hispanic mummies, ancient ships and contemporary art. Great writers, painters and musicians. Architecture, indigenous ceramics, sculpture and an ocean of history.

The Island Government Cabildo de Gran Canaria’s network of museums open their doors every first weekend of the month for FREE visits.

Saturday 4 May, La Aldea de San Nicolás
III Feria del Tomate

The 3rd edition of the Tomato Fair in La Aldea de San Nicolás on Calle Real and the surrounding areas.

About 1,500 kilos of tomato will be distributed among the visitors and used for the preparation of different food items. Between 9:00 to 14:00, Agricultural and Craft Market with the possibility of visiting the Live Museums network of the Cultural Community Development Project. Live music at 13:00 with Harmonía Show in Plaza la Alameda.

Sunday 5 May, Valsequillo
Feria de la Fresa

The 7th Strawberry fair, probably the best strawberries grown in the Canary Island, this Sunday in Valsequillo. There will be 1000 kilos of strawberries collected just for tasting.

You will get to try and to buy strawberries straight from the local producers. Taste them in many different ways with cream, delicious juices, smoothies, ice cream.

There will be animation, children’s activities and live music to make the VII Feria de la Fresa de Valsequillo a day for the whole family.

Sunday, 5 May, Santa Maria de Guía Feria del Queso – Montaña Alta

Didn’t get enough cheeses last weekend?

Don’t worry… The second Cheese Fair of Santa Maria de Guía takes place in the district of Montaña Alta, Piedra Molino (aim for the surroundings of the church).

Enjoy a day of delicious cheeses, market, artisans, live music and tastings of local delicacies.
