Policia Nacional have detained six men in the touristed southern municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana between the ages of 20 and 68, three Spanish and another three Moroccan, several of them with previous police records, for alleged crimes against intellectual industrial property. The arrested men were found to be selling leading brand name counterfeit articles, mainly to foreign tourists. Six searches were carried out in commercial premises across the south of Gran Canaria, where counterfeit products were seized with a supposed value of €491,815.
The police investigation was initiated after officers learned of the alleged sale of counterfeit goods in several stores in southern Gran Canaria, primarily aimed at tourists.
The agents carried out inspections in six commercial premises in Playa del Inglés, where they had the help of an expert from the Antipiracy Commission of the Ministry of Culture. A large number of items were found to be counterfeit and whose supposed market value would nearly half a million euros. Among the counterfeit items confiscated by agents there were a large number of clothing items, footwear, accessories all with logos from well recognised trademarks.
The police investigation culminated in the arrest of a total of six men, including owners and employees of commercial establishments. They were identified by agents as being those responsible for the storage, marketing and sale of the aforementioned products, for which reason they were detained as alleged perpetrators of a crime against industrial property.
When the corresponding police report was issued, it was sent to the competent Judicial Authority.
The police intervention was carried out by agents of the Local Brigade of the Judicial Police of the Maspalomas Police Station.
