According to those present, the actor arrived discreetly with his team, greeting a few staff before spending time in a portable dressing room on site. After more than an hour, he was taken straight to the dock where a boat had been prepared for filming. Security measures ensured there were no interruptions: journalists were escorted away from the work area, equipment was hidden from view, and communication among the crew was kept to short instructions over radios.
Travolta’s appearance formed part of the production of Black Tides, an action-thriller directed by Renny Harlin, known for films such as Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and Deep Blue Sea. The story follows a family stranded at sea off the southern coast of Spain and targeted by orca attacks. Travolta plays a father, with the film mixing survival drama with ocean-based action sequences.
This is not the first location at which the production has been spotted on the island. Last week, scenes were shot in Sardina del Norte, a small fishing village in the municipality of Gáldar, on Gran Canaria’s north-western coast. No other filming locations have yet been officially confirmed, with the studio keeping details under tight wraps.
The choice of Gran Canaria reflects the island’s growing profile as a destination for international film productions. Its varied landscapes, from volcanic mountains to coastal waters, combined with tax incentives, have attracted both European and American crews in recent years. While locals are becoming accustomed to film set activity, Travolta’s visit is one of the most high-profile this year.

At the marina itself, filming went largely unnoticed by the general public. The city’s waterfront is open to pedestrians and joggers, and a few passersby caught sight of the activity from a distance. For most, however, the day continued as normal, even as one of Hollywood’s most recognisable actors worked his magic just metres away.
Travolta, now in his early seventies, has a long career spanning more than four decades, from Grease to Pulp Fiction, and numerous other major titles. His presence on the sub-tropical island of Gran Canaria highlights the scale of the current project, though the production continues to maintain a high level of secrecy.
The actor, who flew himself here on his own jet, is expected to remain on the island until the end of October, with filming taking place at several undisclosed locations across Gran Canaria.
