A more tranquil couple of weekends ahead before the Carnival season starts with a bang in the capital Las Palmas at the end of the month along with one of the most scenic & nature-infused festivals: the Almond blossom season, held in Valsequillo and in Tejeda.

In the meanwhile, enjoy the January sunshine and take full advantage of the sales, get out and explore as the. almonds are in blossom and all the wonderful markets that Gran Canaria has to offer are returning to normality after the Yule Time frenzy.

34th INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL OF THE CANARY ISLANDS

S. Prokofiev Ivan The Terrible op. 116

The 34th International Music Festival of the Canary Islands concert series on Gran Canaria starts on January 12th  with a great production by José Carlos Plaza, a prestigious theatre director who has won the Spanish National Theatre Prize three times.

He will stage Ivan the Terrible by Prokofiev, with narration by the actor José Coronado and performed by the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra and the Spanish National Choir led by César Álvarez, with Polina Shamaeva, mezzo-soprano and Alexey Zelenkov, baritone.

Saturday 13 January, Artenara 

Mercado Agrícola y Ganadero 

The highest altitude mountain village on the island, Artenara, have an agricultural and farmers market on Saturday from 11:00-15:00 at the picturesque Plaza de San Matias.

This gorgeous mountain side market will be livened up with traditional folk music groups singing and dancing.

A lovely car ride indeed to get to see some of the most impossibly beautiful places on Gran Canaria.  Well worth a trip up to the summits!

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria (OFGC) play a family and children´s concert series in the Sala Gabriel Rodó, by the Alfredo Kraus Concert Hall, every month until the summer. This month’s is billed as a ‘journey into the beat of three’

The production is based on the story by Jakob Grimm, “The Musicians of Bremen” tells the tale of four animals: a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster that live in the village of Dibbsersen, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Their owners have decided to sacrifice them because of their old age, because they only consume food and are no longer useful for domestic service. The animals are discovered one by one as each, independently, has fled from the
home of their respective owners.

Recommended for little children aged 3-8 years.

Belly teacher and choreographer, Valentina Petrillo, returns weekly as ‘Leyla’ to bring the dances of the exotic east to the south of Gran Canaria in the outstanding Ethiopian Restaurant Afrika at the CC Ronda shopping centre. She was the semifinalist in Italia’s Got Talent and organises bellydance events across Europe. Gastronomy and Music pairing, Mercado del Puerto

The #MercadodelPuerto presents the voice of a promising young musician, Gabriela Suárez Díaz. Soul, Jazz, Blues, nothing and no-one can resist him.

The old port market area has become one of the trendiest nightspots in Las Palmas, on the divide between the main port and Las Canteras.  Awash with bars and gourmet restaurants, these musical interludes only go to heighten an already electric weekend atmosphere.


Sunday 14 January, Agaete

Mercado Artesanal 

On Sunday, an artisanal market in the beautiful port town of Agaete, on the northwestern coast of Gran Canaria. The coastal neighbourhood of Las Nieves welcomes the first Artisan Market of the year this Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00 and it will take place every second Sunday of each month.

From Calle Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves (from El Mesón ‘El Bocadillo‘) until the entrance to the Old Dock. The street will be closed to traffic, so it will be pedestrian only from 09.00 to 17.00. The road to Puerto de Las Nieves will be of double direction to facilitate access to the car parks, entering via the GC-172 towards the Old Dock.

To continue with the traditional musical accompaniment of last year, this Sunday, the Artisan Market will feature the best Mexican music from the group El Mariachi.

The Artisan Market is organised by the Town Hall of the Villa de Agaete, through the Department of Crafts, and has the collaboration of the Foundation for Ethnography and Development of Canary Island Crafts (Fedac) of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.


Sunday 14 January, Ingenio 

Mercado Agroalimentarios y Artesanales de La Pasadilla

This Sunday,  the food and craft market of La Pasadilla will reopen, an activity launched by the Union of Small Farmers and Livestock Farmers of Las Palmas in collaboration with the town Council of the Villa de Ingenio.

The La Pasadilla Market offers a space where you can buy fresh, local and quality produce, while offering the opportunity to participate in interesting workshops, tastings and activities related to the agricultural sector and restoration.

Also during the day there is a draw for a basket with products from the area. Market open from 9:00 to 14:00.
