“With the arrival of autumn, thousands of Cory’s shearwater chicks take their first night flight from the cliffs to the sea.  But instead of following the moonlight, many are dazzled by urban lighting, especially in densely populated coastal areas. This disorients them, causing them to fall to the ground, crash into lampposts or power lines, and even be run over.”

💙  If you find an injured shearwater, the first thing to do is to catch it, using a rag if it tries to bite you. Don’t leave it for later, because they’re capable of hiding.

💙  Then carefully place it in a cardboard box; other materials tend to damage the feathers, and they are more delicate than they appear at first glance.

💙 It’s also a good idea to fill the bottom of the box with sawdust or newspaper shavings, which act as absorbents for any animal droppings. You can ventilate the inside of the box by making a few holes in it.

💙  Once closed, leave the box in a quiet place, protected from the sun or rain, and call the emergency numbers: 112,  Guardia Civil, Local Police, Red Cross, Civil Protection, or the Environmental Department.

💙 Do not give any water or food.

🌞 Sun & Heat

Daytime temperatures will reach a comfortable 25–27°C in most coastal resorts, sometimes feeling hotter during sunny afternoons, especially in the south and west. UV levels are moderate to high (6–7), so using sunscreen (SPF 30+), sun hats, and taking breaks in the shade is important, particularly at midday. Occasional cloud will offer relief, but it’s wise to avoid extended exposure between 12:00 and 16:00. Carry water for all outdoor walks and festivals. If you’re traveling inland for events or joining The Long Walk, expect slightly cooler mountain weather: 20–23°C, with evenings dipping as low as 14°C.

🏖 Beaches

Southern and western beaches—Mogán, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas—will enjoy long periods of sunshine and gentle breezes, ideal for swimming, relaxing, or joining charity runners near the coast. Weekend water temperatures remain pleasant at 23–24°C. A few clouds and occasionally moderate swell may appear, especially Saturday, but by Sunday most areas will return to bright weather with only a slight chance of a quick shower. The north coast starts cloudier but clears up by afternoon—perfect for water sports fans. UV is still strong on the sand and in the water, so protect young children accordingly.

🎉 Main Events & Safety

This weekend’s highlight is The Long Walk Gran Canaria, a 3-day coast-to-coast hiking adventure supporting food banks in the south. Expect special activity and some bus/service changes, especially near La Aldea, Cruz de Tejeda, Guayadeque, and El Burrero. In Las Palmas, Sonora Festival brings free live music to Plaza de Santa Ana on both Friday and Saturday. The last big fiestas of La Naval take over La Isleta, with street parties, folklore processions, and fireworks on Sunday. South of the island, El Tablero hosts the Gathering of Southern Dancers Saturday night, while Vecindario throws open-air fiestas and comedy. Gáldar presents the world’s best bodyboarding at the Frontón King, plus a new farmers’ market on Sunday. If you’re driving or using Global Bus, allow extra time for event traffic.

Sea conditions remain generally calm, but always watch for local safety flags and heed lifeguard advice. Remember to hydrate, use reef-safe sunscreens, and take care traveling mountain roads, especially at night as temperatures drop and visibility can decrease.

Overview ☀️

🌴 #GranCanariaWeather

A gentle autumn weekend is in store for Gran Canaria with comfortably warm daytime highs (25–27°C) and mild nights (lows around 19–21°C). While most days will bring long periods of sunshine, scattered clouds are expected, and there is a growing risk of showers, especially in central and northern areas Saturday afternoon. Winds remain mostly light and breezy, so conditions are pleasant for open-air events and sea activities. No significant weather warnings are currently in place.

#GranCanariaWeather 17-19 October

Friday 17 October:
Cloud intervals in the morning, turning sunnier by midday with warm highs around 26°C across the island, both in the south/coast and Las Palmas. Winds are light from the east and southeast. There’s only a slight (5–10%) chance of a brief shower later in the day, mainly north or inland.

Saturday 18 October:
Expect more cloud, especially from midday, with patchy rain (particularly in central and northern hills). Rain probabilities climb from 25% mid-morning to 75% for interior zones in the afternoon. Temperatures remain stable—highs of 25–26°C (south) and 22–25°C (Las Palmas), but it may feel humid. Light to moderate southerly winds and the sea stays calm and inviting for swimmers.

Sunday 19 October:
Cloud cover reduces and bright, sunny spells are forecast for most regions, with only isolated light rain possible inland early. Expect a fresh, warm day with temperatures 25–26°C and gentle breezes. Beach conditions will be excellent by the afternoon, especially in southern resorts.

🔭 Looking Ahead to Next Week

Moving into Monday and beyond, the island sees a quick return to fair weather. Highs inch upwards to 27°C by midweek, with calm nights (lows 19–20°C). Humidity remains moderate and the sun dominates, though a patch of cloud may linger in the early mornings, particularly on the northeast slopes. Winds settle from the northeast, and the UV index stays at moderate-high levels, so sun protection is still advised. The outlook is ideal for travel, outdoor adventures, and beach activities across the south and Las Palmas, with only brief, isolated showers possible midweek mainly in upland areas.

Whether you’re supporting The Long Walk, enjoying autumnal fiestas, or just making the most of Gran Canaria’s world-famous coast, conditions should support a fantastic weekend and an active week ahead.

Community is THE most powerful thing we have in this world, and there are so many ways you can help us here, so if you have a few euros or some time, we hugely appreciate it 🙏

Friday Day 1 – The Long Walk Challenge
________________________________

La Aldea de San Nicolás → Cruz de Tejeda (31 km)

We begin on the wild west coast of Gran Canaria, in La Aldea de San Nicolás, a remote municipality long marked by isolation, tomato farming, and its famous Fiesta del Charco — a celebration with roots in pre-Hispanic traditions. From the cliffs of Andén Verde we climb inland past reservoirs toward the island’s highlands.
Midway, the route touches Artenara, Gran Canaria’s highest village (1,270 m), known for cave dwellings and its UNESCO-listed Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains. Continuing across the high ridges, we enter the volcanic amphitheatre of the Caldera de Tejeda, guarded by Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga.
The day ends at the Cruz de Tejeda, the symbolic crossroads of the island. At sunset, we look out across a landscape Miguel de Unamuno described as a “petrified storm,” with Tenerife’s Mount Teide visible on the horizon.

☁️ Day 2 – A Stroll Through the Clouds

________________________________

Cruz de Tejeda → Guayadeque Ravine (20 km)

Climbing higher, we reach the Pico de las Nieves, traditionally the highest point of Gran Canaria (1,948 m), named for its historic snow pits that once supplied ice to Las Palmas’ clergy. This summit toast to the “Goddesses of the Peaks” is a Long Walk tradition.
From here, the descent takes us through vast Canary pine forests into the eastern slopes. We pass into the Barranco de Guayadeque, one of the island’s most sacred and fertile valleys, once home to thousands of cave dwellings. Today, many still serve as homes, restaurants, and chapels carved directly into the rock. Guayadeque is protected as both a Natural Monument and an archaeological zone of Spanish cultural heritage, with finds ranging from ancient settlements to mummified remains.

🌊 Day 3 – Descent to the East – JOIN US for The Last Leg
________________________________
Guayadeque → Ingenio → Playa de El Burrero (16 km)

On the final stage we emerge from the ravine into Ingenio, whose name recalls the sugar mills that shaped its colonial history. In the 16th century, the fertile Vega de Aguatona supported large cane fields, powered by ingenious water systems built with Madeiran expertise. Today, Ingenio is known for its folkloric traditions, hand-cut embroidery, and annual International Folklore Festival.
From here, the route continues to the coast, ending at Playa de El Burrero. This windswept beach of volcanic sand and Atlantic waves is rooted in fishing heritage and more recently in windsurf and kitesurf culture. Archaeological remains and the discovery of an 18th-century corsair wreck nearby give El Burrero a storied past.
Together, we’ll gather for the final photo by the ocean, The Big Picture, celebrating not only the crossing of the island but also the solidarity that fuels this journey.
