The poster and the program of events for the Carnival Costa Mogán 2019 were presented at the headquarters of the Gran Canaria Tourism Board on Tuesday, March 12, detailing an edition dedicated to the theme of the African continent. The streets of Arguineguín and Plaza del Mercadillo will be filled carnival from March 26 to 31, when more than 20,000 people are expected to gather for the annual Springtime celebrations.

A citizens’ vote selected the allegory for the third time, through Mogán’s official mobile app and the official Facebook page, with ‘Africa’ being the most popular choice, gaining 66.67% of the votes.

The support of the Tourist Board once more adds an investment €10,000 to the reported €73,000 that the Town Hall of Mogán have allocated to these festivities. There will be range of free shows and events to go and see including the ever popular body makeup contest, drag queen gala, verbenas, mogollones, the burial and the burning of the sardine, batucadas, comparsas and, of course, the grande parade on Saturday March 30th.

The Minister for Tourism of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria commented that “they participate from a tourism perspective to make this a great promotional resource …for all the tourists that are on Gran Canaria during these days and who also participate in this activity.”

Mogán has organized lively street parade performances with the batucada Samba Da Ihla and the comparsa Aragüimé as a visual method of informing tourists and the residents about the events of the Carnival Costa Mogán 2019 and this year Rafaelillo the Clown will be in charge of distributing the flyers and programs, prepared in English and Spanish, throughout several tourist areas of the municipality. On Sunday, March 24, the performance parade will pass through the avenida of Playa de Amadores at 11:30 and will move to the beach of Puerto Rico at 13:00. On Monday, 25, the performers can be seen at 20:00 hours in the Shopping Centre Puerto Rico.

On Tuesday, March 26, the Costa Mogán Carnival will start at 20:00 pm in an opening gala that will feature the presentation of the Canarian humorist Juanka and performances from the students of the Municipal Artistic Schools, the Occupational Centre of Mogán, municipal collectives and comparsas Samba Caribeña, Ritmo Sureño, the Ana Vega ballet and Acedance. The Chirimurga del Timple, already known throughout the archipelago, will also be present.

On Wednesday 27 the second edition of the Body Makeup Contest will be held. Presented by José Antonio Cabrera from 20:00.

On Thursday 28 the highly anticipated Drag Gala will be from 21:00. Conducted by television personality Roberto Herrera, with the Municipal Artistic Schools, the Popular University of Mogán all participating in addition to the performances of Pepón ‘Mayedrag’, Dácil Suárez and High Heels Performance.

On Friday 29 Party Wigs, a great party with the Djs Francd, José Viera and the singer of electrolatino DsC. There will also be animation, jugglers, acrobats and other performers from the MSB Circus Association starting from 20:00.

On Saturday the 30th, the Day of the parade, attendance of more than 10,000 people is expected. As every year, it will depart from El Timonel at 19:00 and arrive at Plaza Negra, where the rest of the Carnival events are being held, to make way for the Mogollón with the Dominican Combo, La Mekanica by Tamarindos and DJ Promaster.

On Sunday 31 at 17:30, the youngest ones in the family will be the protagonists in a costume party where there will be photocall, chocolatada and carnival pancakes. There will also be a costume catwalk with the animation of Rafaelillo Clown and DJ Aridane.

After the children’s activity it will be time for “the wake of the sardine” at 19:30, which will be accompanied by the Charanga La Aldea-music group and all those wishing to say goodbye to the Carnival Costa Mogán 2019. The cremation will occur after the sardine leaves from the Plaza Negra to go to the beach of Las Marañuelas beach at 20:15, where attendees can enjoy a fireworks display.
