February is here and with it the first weekend of the month, meaning that the island’s network of museums run by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria will open their doors for free to visitors, the main shopping area of Triana in Las Palmas will also be hosting  a range of extra activities on Sunday.

There is rock music galore in the capital, henna art and african food in San Fernando and the most beautiful mountain village of Tejeda are celebrating their almond blossom festivities all weekend.

FIESTAS DEL ALMENDRO EN FLOR

This years main almond  blossom festivities in Tejeda will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

The 48th edition of Fiestas del Almendro en Flor Tejeda, one of the most popular winter season festivities on Gran Canaria, is a most wonderful event to visit at this time of year. This will mark the last traditional celebration of the almond trees blossoming up in the mountains… until next year.

Saturday, “Dia de Turista”.  This day has been dedicated for foreign tourists and for everyone who wants to come and enjoy all that this village, officially one the most beautiful villages in Spain, has to offer.

Starting from 10:30 on the main street, an Artisanal fair with food tastings of traditional Canarian tapas, and very affordable prices of €1 per item, as well as performances from various folk music groups throughout the day, including the most famous of all Los Gofiones.

10:00 to 16:00 at Municipal Park Exhibition of animals: Hens, black pigs, sheep, goats and donkey walks.
10:30 to 13:30 at Plaza de Ntra. Sra. Del Socorro Popular games for all ages.
11:00 to 12:00 – Top floor of the new parking area; Traditional Sports Exhibition: Canarian wrestling at the Battle Club of Tinamar, Demonstration of Salto del Pastor, (shepherds’ leap) Demonstrating the traditional way shepherds used to use a large pole to travel quickly across mountain terrain, and there will be the traditional martial art of stick fighting.
12:30 Plaza Ntra. Sra. Del Socorro: Musical performance of the group Timple and Other Small Guitars of the World.
16:30 from Cruz Blanca to Plaza Ntra. Sra. Del Socorro ; street parade with Gran Canaria band.

SUNDAY 3 February

From 10:00am the village of Tejeda, will celebrate a broad sample of Canarian traditions and culture. Artisans, folkloric groups, ventorrillos, selling typical produce of the area, all of the villagers will meet from the early hours of the day to set up an authentic backdrop to welcome the most important element of the festivities: the people who visit. The day will be enlivened by folkloric groups.

The band Cactus pay tribute to infamous American alt rock group Pixies, this Saturday, in The Paper Club

After the concert, a night full of alternative music hits with Diego Hernández and PoliSHound; and all free to enter.

The doors open at 23:00 to host the sounds of one of the most influential alternative rock groups of the 20th century, influencing especially the Seattle grunge bands of the early 90s, with Kurt Cobain, of Nirvana, having always confessed to being a fan.

Triana celebrates the ‘First Open Weekend’ of February with various free workshops for the little ones in the family.

The Business Association of  Zona Triana takes up the Open Weekend initiative after the Christmas holidays with a program of activities focused on the youngest members of the household.

Workshops include: in las
musical crocodiles 11:00-14:00 (at Triana 20).
animal agamographers – optical art formed by hidden images- 11:00-14:00 (Triana, 60) and much more besides aimed at providing that the little ones their own entertainment space while their parents enjoy the shops during the sales period.

In addition there will be face-painting workshops and body details 11:00-14:00 (Calle Travieso with Calle Cano) , where the most daring of children will be painted as some of their favourite characters.
