The suspect had initially been intercepted on 7 August by undercover officers near the Centro Comercial Europa, where he was allegedly seen attempting to conceal suspicious items between a wall and a palm tree. Upon being approached, the man reportedly pushed one of the officers and fled the scene, running through the shopping centre and residential areas while tossing a white package into a roundabout.
A search of the area later recovered 20 packets of suspected cocaine and three bags of marijuana, with assistance from the Canine Unit. Despite intensive patrols and surveillance across the municipality’s nightlife zones, the suspect managed to evade capture for several days.
He was finally located and arrested during the night of 13 August in a nightlife district of Mogán.
The individual now faces charges relating to public health offences and serious disobedience to law enforcement.
🌴 Tourist Zone Concerns
Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria is a well-known tourist destination, particularly popular among international visitors. Like many resort areas, concerns about drug dealing near nightlife venues are not new. Local bar owners have long reported instances of dealers approaching customers in public areas, despite most establishments working proactively to keep their premises clear of such activity.
While many residents and businesses welcome the recent arrest as a sign of action, there is ongoing concern about the visibility and frequency of police operations in the area. Some business owners argue that enforcement is too often reactive, and that additional collaboration between Policía Local, Guardia Civil, and the local council is needed to sustain a safer environment.
🛑 Ongoing Enforcement
Although not all operations are publicised, this latest arrest suggests that coordinated efforts are underway to reduce illegal activity. The use of plainclothes officers, canine support, and ongoing patrols indicate that the municipality is actively investing resources to address street-level drug trafficking in tourist-heavy zones.
