The weather forecast this weekend shows some expectation of relief after a warm week. It’s Eurovision song contest weekend and 19th hole Meloneras is showing whole show live.  International Museums Day is celebrated across Europe and on Gran Canaria on 18 May with special nit time events happening as well as free entry during the day.

17-19 May, El Tablero
Fiestas patronales en honor a la Santísima Trinidad

The patron saint’s festivities in El Tablero come to an end this weekend.  The residential neighbourhood on the other side of the GC-1 from Sonnenland has been celebrating their annual fiestas in honour of the Holy Trinity.

On Friday Children’s activities include a bouncy castles and workshops in the Plaza (in front of the church).  There will also be family theatre in the Cultural Centre at 19:00 and in the Plaza a traditional Night of Taifas, starting at 21:00

 

On Saturday the 18th,  between 11:00-12:30 there is a foam party for children at Plaza de El Tablero.

12:00 Bajada la Rama, the lowering the branch procession (a quirky pre hispanic tradition still included in many of the main island celebrations). Departure of the street procession will be from the parking lot of I.E.S Tablero school and travel via the main streets to the Plaza.

At 17:00 a birthday bash dedicated to all the children at the Plaza de El Tablero. There is also a salsa master class from 20:30 and at 22:00 a concert of Los 600.

A verbena street party 23:45 and fireworks at midnight and late night entertainment by Güira latina and Furia Joven.

Sunday starts early in the morning with the “diana floreada” marching band at 05:30.
Later Eucharist is celebrated at 11:00 in the church followed by a religious procession.

A giant paella, for about 5,000 people, is scheduled for 14:00.

Music will continue in El Tablero on in to the evening and at 21:00 the last gala to finish up this year’ celebrations with some Spanish humour from Kike Perez.


Saturday 18 May, Las Palmas
Spring Fair – Holy Trinity Church

A very British fare on Saturday at the Holy Trinity church in Las Palmas.

Between 11.30 – 15:30 at the garden of the church,  there shall be raffle, gifts, books, clothes, bar, food, baked goods White elephant and much more. All ingredients for a splendid time in the garden city of the Capital.

 

 


17-18 May, Salinas del Matorral, SBT
Fiestas de la Sal

A very intimate and family oriented tiny neighbourhood by the sea  Salinas del Matorral, on the outskirts of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, are celebrating their festivities in honour of Santa Rita de Casia. This year marks the 10th anniversary and the festivities and lasts 2 days.

On Friday, May 17, the neighbours gather at 16:00 to make a “carpet of salt”  for the Saint.

On Saturday, a religious mass ( held outdoors), begins at 17:00, followed by the Romeria Pilgrimage Offering and procession, ending with the festival enlivened by Music, starting at 19:30.

 

 


18-19 May, Arucas
XXVII Feria de Ganado Selecto de Gran Canaria

The traditional agriculture and primary sector Fair of Gran Canaria and the 27th exhibition contest of selected livestock is held at the Experimental farm (Granja Experimental) run by the island Cabildo. The farm is located on the Arucas coast in the north. Throughout Saturday and Sunday,  a wide range of animals including horses, goats, donkeys, pigs, of all shape and sizes. There will also be a shepherds’ leap exhibition (Sat at 11:00) , Canarian music performances, agricultural machinery, equestrian performances, children’s activities. You can enjoy the farmers market with stalls for wine, cheese, oil, fruit and vegetables and many other products.

On Saturday 10:00 – 18:30 and on Sunday 10:00 – 15:00  

 

 

 

 

 


18-19 May, Motor Grande Puerto Rico, Mogán
Fiestas patronales María Auxiliadora

The local patron saint celebrations in honour of Maria Auxiliadora, (Mary the helper of Christians) starts this Saturday in Motor Grande.

On Saturday, starting at 11:00 there is a children’s party with bouncy castles and a mini-disco. Later in the evening at 20:00 the opening show with music and is followed by a “Scala en Hifi”, a rehearsed karaoke show with the local young stars.

On Sunday, a championship on Rally simulator at 11:00 as well as a foam party and inflatable water toys. At 14:00 championship battle on Bubble football and later at 14:00 the Day party with a grand paella enlived with music performances.

Next Saturday, the 25th is the big day,with Romeria, the pilgrimage offering for the patron saint, starting at 19:00 and later fireworks at midnight after the closing show. 


18-19 May, Las Palmas
IV Evento Barberos Solidarios

The fourth edition of the “Solidarity barbers” charity event, dedicated this time to the “Día del Orgullo loco’, around the Plaza de Saulo Torón, on to the Paseo de la Playa de Las Canteras.

Haircuts and massages will be on offer by professionals, a solidarity race of 7 km, parades, beach volleyball, beach tennis, activities for the whole family, ‘batucadas’ rhythmic music bands and ‘papahuevos’ big paper mache dolls will animate an event that has already been consolidated in the city’s agenda due to its great work for local causes.

On Saturday 09:00-18:00 and on Sunday 10:00-20:00


18-19 May, Arucas
Fiestas de San Isidro Labrador Montaña de Cardones

The Arucas neighbourhood of Montaña de Cardones up in the north celebrate their patron saint’s festivities in honour of San Isidro the Farmer this weekend.

On Saturday , Romeria, the traditional pilgrimage offering at 18:00 from Avenida Pedro Morales Déniz (the main road , coming in to town).

On Sunday, Solemn Eucharist at 11:30 at the church and is followed by a religious procession with the images of San Isidro and his wife Santa María de la Cabeza.


Saturday 19 May, Artenara 
Romeria – Fiesta en honor a San Isidro Labrador

Artenara, the highest village on Gran Canaria are also celebrating festivities in honour of  Isidore the Farmer and on Saturday 18 May, the Romeria, a pilgrimage offering starting at 12:00.
