May is here and summer is just around the corner, yet weather predictions by Spanish Meterological Agency AEMET show possibilities of some rain this weekend across the Island.  Remember too that this Sunday Spanish Mother’s Day, El Día de la Madre, is celebrated also.

Its Rally time and when there is a rally it also means road closures and traffic restrictions.
On Friday stages are driven in Valsequillo, San Mateo and in Artenara. On Saturday Arucas, Moya and Gáldar

Free shows to kick off Pride Maspalomas

There will be free outdoor events around the main stage in the middle of shopping centre Yumbo in Playa del Inglés.

On Friday starting at 22:00 The Welcome Gala
On Saturday at 22:00 a Tribute Gala with Cher, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
On Sunday Made in Canarias with José Saavedra, the Rainbow Gospel choir, Rubén Dizá, Jia Miles.


Friday 4 May, Las Palmas 
Good Night Triana Fiesta de La Primavera (Spring Party)

The Triana commercial area in Las Palmas is celebrating a spring fiesta on Friday with shopping, discounts, live music and gastronomy and a multitude of activities from 17:00 to 23:00. Click here to see the full program

Also the Cabildo’s cultural buildings and museums in Las Palmas will have extended opening hours for visits, like  Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós. Cabildo de Gran Canaria guided visits until 22:00,  CAAM, Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno. Cabildo de Gran Canaria is open until 22:00 as well as
Librería del Cabildo .

 


Saturday 5 May, Las Palmas 
English Church Spring Fair 

Spring is in the air at the Anglican Holy Trinity church yard, a beautiful corner of Las Palmas that remains forever England, in the Ciudad Jardin, Garden City of the old British Colonial Merchant Quarter.

Spring fair delights from 11:30 to 15:30 with  food, drinks, English teas, activities for kids, and a variety of stalls and of course the famous drinks raffle (so many winners!).

The Cabildo’s network of museums open their doors again this weekend for FREE visits, as they do every first weekend of the month.

5-6 May, Tejeda
Fiesta de San José y La Santa Cruz

Teror is preparing for the Burning of the Ship and the Castle at 22:30 with a concert by Los Gofiones on Saturday in the Plaza de Sintes, from 21:00

The ‘Burning of the Ship and the Castle’ is an artisanal pyrotechnic exhibition of fire, colour and noise unique to the Canary Islands, which has been maintained for several generations through the Dávila family, recalling the pirate attacks on the island and the Defence of the Cross.

The pyrotechnic show takes about three months of preparation and includes a display of some 15 moving figures to which fire and colour effects are applied, which vary each year. The protagonists are the Cross, the Ship and the Castle.

On Sunday, on the morning of the main day of the Feast of the Cross in Teror a celebration Mass at the Basilica del Pino at 12:00 noon, and then the procession of San José and the Holy Cross through the streets of the Casco de Teror.

Remember that in Teror there is a market happening from 9:00 to 15:00



Sunday 6 May, Guia
Fiesta del Queso 

Cheese!!! The last weekend of the cheese fair in Guía and this time the traditional gastronomy and artisanal fair is in the neighbourhood of Montaña Alta Piedra Molino.

Montaña Alta, is the neighborhood of the Guianian midlands where this popular celebration was born around the local Cheese and the Canarian traditions more than four decades ago. Head to the church.
The market starts at 10:00. At twelve o’clock noon, the stalls will be opened to offer thousands of tastings of Canarian traditional gastronomy. During the day the fair will be enlivened by live Canarian folkmusic groups.


Sunday 6 May, Tejeda
Mercado agrícola y artesanal 

On Mothering Sunday, in tejeda, located in the mountainous central part of island and mover than 1000 meters above sea level, there is Tejeda’s agricultural and handicraft market, and this Sunday the market will be held in Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Socorro. Do not miss!

And since it is also a Spanish Mothers day, a rose will be given to all mothers.

 


Sunday 6 May, Las Palmas
Triana Domingo Abierto

The opening of the shops in the commercial zone of Triana, on the first Sunday of May, between 11.00 and 18.00, will be complemented with activities aimed at the whole family, especially the youngest of the house.

The day includes a children’s kitchen workshop, to prepare fruit skewers and cupcakes, between 12.00 and 14.00, on Calle Triana, on the corner of Calle Travieso; Origami workshops, on Calle Triana, further up the main street there will be inflatable castles, in the Alameda de Colón, between 15:00 and 18:00.

Outdoor musical performances will take place between 12.30 and 15.00, on Calle Lentini, on Hurtado de Mendoza, next to the Monopol Shopping Center; on Calle Triana, 20; at Calle Constantino, 12; Calle Perdomo, 11 and Calle Travieso, 8.
