The Maspalomas neighbourhood of San Fernando, once a simple village of tomato growers, this week begin to enjoy their patron saint celebrations from 23 May – 2 June. Saturday 1st of June. is the day for the main Romeria pilgrimage offering for the patron saint San Fernando, where attendees will be likely dressed in traditional costume and processing through the streets around the church. The playful festive programming under the slogan ‘Vive San Fernando’ emphasizes in this edition of 2019 its vocation for traditional and participatory popular event and acts.
Highlights for the festivities :
On Friday 24.5. Children’s animation at 18:00 at Plaza de San Fernando. There is a eucharist mass at 19:30 in the park next to the church. DJ competition at midnight in the Chiringuito area (in front of the municipal swimming pool).
On Saturday 25.5. An event called Masparranda Juerga starting at 21:00 is organized in the old part of San Fernando, with the Bejeque Group offering guest training in traditional forms of revelry with local music groups, rope runs between single and married women and the tasting of typical and traditional homemade dishes. At midnight an after party at Plaza de San Fernando with music by Legenda Joven and DJ Sammyto
On Sunday 26.5. the second hand market at the municipal market place starting at 09:00. There is a eucharist mass at the church at 09:30, 11:30 and 19:30. Later during the day children’s animation at Plaza de San Fernando from 18:00 and at 19:30 the Gala electing the Juvenile and children’s Queen of the fiestas with performances by the local ballet and music groups.
On Monday 27.5. A Circus spectacle at the Plaza starting at 17:00 with clowns, magic, acrobats, theatre and comedy etc.
Wednesday 29.5. a big birthday party for all the children from 18:00 at the plaza. There is a Folkloric Festival, starring Los Sabandeños, Parranda Las Dunas and the Argones Groups starting at 21:00. In the Plaza de San Fernando, a plaque in tribute and gratitude to the local television program Tenderete on the main TVE channel in the Canary Islands, for its work disseminating traditional music.
On Thursday 30.5. on Canary Islands’ day, the celebration of the patron saint of San Fernando will begin with a mass-procession at 11:30. The most popular part of the event will be the traditional fish barbecue organized in the parking lot of the Maspalomas Colegio I at 13:30, with performances from musical band La Salle and Paco Guedes. At 18:00 children’s animation at the plaza as well as a taekwondo exhibition
Friday 31.5. The IV Wine and Tapas Fair in Plaza de San Fernando, starting at 21:00, with performances by the Altahabana group, salsa and traditional Cuban music, and the Star Músic orchestra.
On Sunday 2 June, eucharist at the church at 09;30 and 11:30. There is a foam party at 12:00 and then at 18:00 Children’s animation. The festivities come to an end with a ballet performance at 19:00 in the main Plaza de San Fernando and a Eucharist blessing at 19:30.
