The Carnival Costa Mogán 2018 officially starts on Tuesday, February the 20th. The theme this year, decided by citizen vote, is dedicated to Comics and Superheroes. Carnival, primarily held in the southern tourist-cum-fishing town of Arguineguín, is probably the most international festival held in the municipality and has in previous years brought together more than 20,000 people to celebrate the traditional end of winter and the coming of spring.
The Carnival program activities – all free– will once again this year have the support the Gran Canaria Tourism Board with an investment of €10,000, adding to the more than €73,000 that the Mogán town hall allocate for the organization of the main events.
With the aim of publicizing the program of the Carnival Costa Mogán 2018, and inviting tourists and residents to attend the numerous events, various parades have been organized. With the Batucada Samba (dance group) Da Ihla and the Comparsa Aragüimé (rhythmic drum group), where programs for the Carnival will be distributed in English and Spanish throughout the tourist areas of the municipality by comic book characters.
On Saturday 17th February, the mini street parade through Playa de Mogán will invite tourists and residents to attend the Carnival. On Sunday Feb 18th the mini street parade will move around the beaches of Amadores and Puerto Rico and, on the afternoon of Monday 19th, will bring music and dance to the Puerto Rico Shopping Center.
Tuesday 20 February
At 20:00 The Carnival Costa Mogán 2018 will begin with a Body Painting Competition on the Arguineguín main stage.
Wednesday 21 February
At 20:00 the Carnival Gala, will be presented by Dani Calero at which the Municipal Artistic Schools and several groups from around the municipality will be performing.
Thursday 22 February
At 21:00 the Drag Queen Gala, presented by native Canarian television star Roberto Herrera. 10 Drags competing, including the winners from Las Palmas Carnival. During the gala the spectators will be able to enjoy the performances of Brazilian artist Marcelo Kaufman and the vocal group MLOU.
Friday 23 February
At 20:00 the “Pelucas” Wig Party. An event, that premiered last year in which there will be animation with juggling, acrobats and stilt walkers and the music of Djs Samu, Dsua Ill Man and Ray Castellano. The party will continue until 01:00 with the festival street party entertained by likes of Güira Latina.
Saturday 24 February Grande Carnival Parade
The parade starts at 19:00 with dance groups, drums, music, people and and of course carnival groups, floats and mascaritas. The departure takes place from the El Timonel area at the top of Pino Seco and it will continue along Calle Francisco Navarro and then Calle Miguel Marrero to end at Calle José Manuel Santana, where the carts and floats will also be parked up. After the cavalcade, from 21:30 the big party with lots of music will commence.
Sunday 25 February
At 17:30 the Children’s Costume Festival at which the little ones can enjoy a photocall with puppets, chocolate and carnival tortillas, the main show will be ‘The adventures of Popi and Lopi’ and a costume catwalk parade.
At 19:30 begins the traditional Funeral and Wake of The Sardine, representing the passing of Carnival for another year, accompanied by the Band Charanga La Aldea and the whole carnival family.
The last act of the Carnival Costa Mogán 2018, will start at 20:15, the funeral procession to the beach for the cremation of the sardine and a big fireworks display.
