It’s the last weekend of June and the Summer has officially arrived. It is also a weekend that follows some of the islands biggest celebrations, with San Juan last week, so there will be a little lull in large institutional festivities before the Virgen del Carmen season gets going in July along with many other big events for the summer here on Gran Canaria.
AEMET’s weather predictions suggest some cloud cover across the island in coming days, mostly lovely, warm summer weather, with clear skies up at the summits (over 1500m), so perhaps a great weekend to get up to the top of the island and experience our famous Mar de Nubes over which you might clearly sea Tenerife and even some of the other islands floating in a sea of clouds.
This weekend there is still loads to do with an Apricot fiesta up in Fataga, Rugby on the beach in Playa del Inglés and a battle re-enactment up near Santa Brigida, with plenty more happing for you to go and see and enjoy.

RECREATION OF THE BATTLE OF EL BATAN – DUTCH PIRATE ATTACKOn the morning following San Juan 1599 the people of the Atlantic colony town of Las Palmas awoke to find Dutch vice admiral Pieter van der Does and an invasion fleet of more than 70 ships occupying the harbour, ready to land on Gran Canaria and take the capital. While the scant militia forces, of less than a thousand men did what they could to defend the city, on the fifth attempt the invasion fleet of more than 8000 men managed to land. The two day battle however allowed enough time for the the townspeople to escape inland, with just the belongings that could be carried, taking refuge up near Monte Lentiscal, very close to the town of Santa Brígida, where the island council rejected the opportunity to surrender to the far superior Flemmish force and the islanders instead prepared for battle on the hilly woodland known as El Batan. Their subsequent victory against the the dutch invasion is celebrated every year as one of the most pivotal moments in Gran Canaria history.
