14-15 SEPTEMBER, SANTA MARIA DE GUÍA Fiesta de la Rama de las Marías

The Mariana invocation in the municipality of Santa María de Guía dates back to at least the 16th century, when the conqueror Sancho de Vargas built a chapel dedicated to the cult of the Virgin Mary. The Fiesta de las Marías is one of the most popular and beloved traditions among locals and visitors to the area.

This festivity commemorates the tradition of “voto de Vergara”, or devotion of de Vargara, which is an event which occurred in 1811 due to a plaque of locusts, during which the local peasant farmers made a promise to go every year to worship the Virgin in Guía, travelling from the highland areas of this northern community, in gratitude; the story tells of how they had gathered and stopped at the Mountain of Vergara on their way to the city, while they were making their prayers, they saw a huge rain cloud arrive whcih with immense force quickly ended the plague. The farmers attributed this fact to a miracle of the Virgin and proclaimed their devotion, which today, 208 years later, “Guienses” continue to observe.

The fiesta is held every year on the third weekend of September and consists of two main events: the “Lowering of the Branch”, the so-called Bajada de La Rama, brought to Guía from the surrounding rural communities, and on Saturday a Procession and Romeria Pilgrimage on Sunday at noon. During the celebration of these two acts highlights the sound of conch shells or bucios and drums (in allegory of the elements used to scare away the plague). As for the pilgrimage, it is said that it is one of the purest, most beautiful and traditional events in the Canary Islands.

On Saturday, the Bajada de la Rama starts at 17:00 from Montaña alta Vergara, where people gather from early in the morning. They will make their way down to the Plaza Grande, gathering more people with them whilst ascending until they reach the church where they give repeat thier devotion promise and dance. This year, because of the Gran Canaria fires there will be no branches to carry but people are asked to bring green ribbons. At 21:00 traditional dancing and music at Plaza Grande.

On Sunday,  a pilgrim’s mass at 09:00 at the church and at 10:30 paseo, a walk with animals participating in the romeria, through the streets to the esplanade of the church. A solemn eucharist follows at 11:00 and then a Romería, the pilgrimage offering starts at 12:00

Did you know

The Rama de las Marías is the almost certianly the oldest such Christian observance on Gran Canaria, since the historical records do not have previous references for other Ramas. In this sense, “La Rama” de Guía can be said to be the first in Gran Canaria.
