La Alcaldesa Bueno Secures Incredible Majority in Mogán

Mogán, May 29, 2023 – The often controversial incumbent, O Bueno, La Alcaldesa, has achieved an unprecedented and resounding victory once more in Mogán. The candidate who switched her party’s name, for these elections, to “Juntos por Mogán”, a local ally of the regionalist conservatives “Coalición Canaria” (CC), will once again assume the role of mayor. Her party has clinched a rather noteworthy 17 out of the 21 seats in the Municipal Council of this popular tourism destination located on the sunny southwest of Gran Canaria.

The Canary Guide Día de Canarias #WeekendTips 26-28 May 2023

What an interesting last weekend of May ahead. Weather predictions are showing some rain showers are likely across Gran Canaria. This extended #WeekendTips covers up to Tuesday, when all things Canarian are celebrated on the Día de Canarias. There’ll be some gorgeous Patron Saints’ festivities happening in San Fernando de Maspalomas as well as in Valleseco.

Fun Fact:
Valleseco literally means “dry valley” in Spanish, but is actually one of the wettest municipalities Gran Canaria. Nestling between the famous fresh water sources of Firgas & Teror, half way up the island’s mountainous northern slopes, this area is well known for its apple growers, cider and its weekly market

Six weeks since the unexplained disappearance of Anna-Karin on Gran Canaria

The authorities on Gran Canaria have been engaged in a rigorous search for Swedish tourist Anna-Karin Bengtsson, who went missing in the south of Gran Canaria around April 9. Her unexplained disappearance has caused her family much distress, with no clues to her whereabouts having emerged in the six weeks since they first realised her phone was no longer functioning.

The Saint: Las Palmas v Alcorcón

    09/11/2019
Sunday: Las Palmas play mid table Alcorcón looking to get back to winning ways after losing 3 in a row. The Problem tonight might be the lack of experience due to having 11 first team squad players out due to injury or suspension.
Images courtesy of UDLasPalmas.es
2 mins LP win a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box. Ball hits the wall but Pekhart picks it up and gets brought down. Penalty given and Pekhart picks himself up and puts the pen straight down the middle… 1-0 LP – an excellent start.
17 mins – a good fast break down the left by LP but the cross is just too strong for the on rushing Pekhart.
21 mins another good passing move by LP wins a corner.
28 mins The visitors have the first shot but it’s easily saved.
Images courtesy of UDLasPalmas.es
42 mins and the first good chance for Alcorcón, a cross from right but the header is just over.
45 mins Alcorcón win a free kick , the ball is played into the box, the keeper should be coming out to punch it but stays on his line, the ball hits the post and falls straight to a waiting Alcorcón player who puts it into the net. 1-1.
Half Time – Las Palmas 1 Alcorcón 1
Such a bad time to concede a goal right on half time after LP dominated most of the first half.
The home team haven’t created many chances but look the better side. They need to continue playing the way they are, create a few more chances and go for the win.
Images courtesy of UDLasPalmas.es
A change of keeper for the 2nd half for Las Palmas and after just 3 mins the Alcorcón keeper goes off with an injury too, so both sides have new keepers.
75 mins in and still not much to report, neither side are creating any good chances
78 mins – and good free kick by LP but the Alcorcón keeper makes a good save and pushes the ball past the post.
82 mins and another good shot by LP from 20 yards out but it flies by just pass the post.
93 mins LP and win a corner, the ball comes out to the edge of box, and the resulting shot comes in by Kirian but again just over. Then LP break once again, Srnić goes down in the box , the crowd cry for a penalty, but nothing given. So the crowd call for VAR but again no pen.

Images courtesy of UDLasPalmas.es
Final Score – Las Palmas 1 Alcorcón 1
The Saint Verdict – Poor 2nd half with both defences cancelling out each other’s weak attacking play. Until injury time when LP put a lot of pressure on Alcorcón but couldn’t find a goal but on overall play I think they deserved the win. A point with all the first team players out is ok but should have been more.

The Saint: Las Palmas V Fuenlabrada

    27/10/19
Las Palmas entertain Fuenlabrada knowing a home win would move them up to 3rd in the league.
3 mins – good move down the right by LP, ball played into the box and falls nicely to Viera but his shot is just over.
18mins another good move down the left, great control by A. Lemos who puts in a lovely cross, but the shot is blocked and cleared.
23mins – good move from the away team, ball plays into the box, and is blocked by Lemos but his touch is poor, letting in the forward who trips over Lemos but nothing given. Straight up the over end but Srnic shot is just over. Fuenlabrada players protest so the ref goes to check the VAR, and a penalty is given. The ball is struck nicely into the bottom left corner – 0-1 Fuenlabrada. Crowd go mad but it is the right decision.
40mins and a good run from Viera bursting through the centre before getting brought down. Free kick in a good position, but Lemos’ shot is just wide.
43mins – LP lose the ball and Fuenlabrada break quickly, putting the ball in the net but the linesman shouts offside. The dreaded VAR is checked and the goal is given. 0-2.
Half Time – Las Palmas 0 Fuenlabrada 2 .
A tight first half but 2 VAR decision have gone against the home side though I think both were correct. Been a close first half but LP haven’t created enough good chances and are unlucky to be 2 goals down. Need a quick start and a goal to get back into this match.
56mins LP go close with a header from a corner. Again another good run from Viera but the shot is blocked.
With pressure from the home side, winning 3 corners, Lemos manages to win a header and Perhart only a few yards out manages to turn the ball wide.
Another good chance on 66mins but again shot goes wide.
77mins Fuenlabrada go down to 10men, red card for Vallejo after 2 yellow cards.
83mins – Fuenlabrada break down the left, the cross comes in but hits the hand of Curbelo and another penalty given. No mistake 0-3!
87mins – great free kick by Viera scores a consolation goal. 1-3
A couple of 1/2 chances in injury time but that was all for the home team.
Full Time – Las Palmas 1
Fuenlabrada 3
The Saint Verdict – 2 VAR decisions and another penalty went against LP tonight but all decision were correct in my view. It was a shame as apart from the 3 chances, the visitors didn’t trouble the home keeper but LP didn’t create enough chances for themselves. A draw would of been a fair result but it was not to be. The Saint: Las Palmas V Almeria

    14/9/19
Las Palmas take on the unbeaten Almeria who sit 3rd in the league. LP had another draw last week against bitter rivals Tenerife. LP would of been disappointed last week as Tenerife played the last part of the match with 10 men but LP failed to take the advantage.
3mins gone and a lively start by the away side. They had the ball in the net but it was offside.
21mins – some good passing by the Alemaria, ball played out wide right and the full back cross looped into the far corner with Martinez in the home goal stranded. 0-1.
25mins another good move down the right , great cut back but LP managed to clear. Almeria look very dangerous on the break.
37mins finally LP manage a shot at goal. Ball comes out to the edge of the box and Javi Castellano has a shot but just passed the post.
45mins – poor clearance by the away keeper gives the ball away with his goal empty but instead of shooting, Castellano passed to Cedres in an offside position.
HT – Las Palmas 0 Almeria 1
Even game with a cross come shot is the difference between the 2 sides. Again LP lacking going forward and when they do get in good positions out wide, no one is in the box. Maybe the injection of pace upfront with Drole coming on might change the game again!?
56mins. Not the start we hoped for, good move down left and shot into the top corner. 0-2, uphill task to come back from this now.
61mins at last a good cross and Pekhart header is just over at the far post.
71mins quick break by LP but shot just wide. Drole and Castro on now, so hopefully a bit more quality upfront.
87 mins good run and shot by Almeria sub and plants a powerful shot into the bottom corner . 0-3.
93mins – quick break by Almeria and the big centre forward goes round the keeper but last ditch defending stops another goal.
Full Time – Las Palmas 0 Almeria 3
The Saint Verdict – poor performance overall by LP. Almeria looked a good side and pressed well and didn’t let LP have time on the ball. LP lacked going forward and Pekhart , who’s a look a like of Peter Crunch, hardly a header all afternoon. LP need the skill and attacking play of Johnathan Viera who is back on loan with the club until Xmas. Lets hope he’s fit and starts soon.
Next home match – Thursday 19th Sept v Real Sporting KO 21.00

The Saint: Las Palmas V Córdoba

13/5/19
Following the disappointing result again last Saturday night in the local derby against Tenerife, losing yet another lead and ending up in a 2-1 defeat, now UD Las Palmas are only 5 points away from relegation. Córdoba sit 2nd from bottom, so this is a massive game for LP tonight to try and avoid being dragged into the relegation battle.
A quick start by the away side but their centre forward shoots miles wide in the opening 2mins.
13 mins in and a good chance for LP, Araujo goes clear but gets the ball stuck in his feet and it is cleared when he should have scored.
In the 19th min – LP win a corner, after a bit of a scrabble in the 6 yard box, Blum manages to bundle the ball over the line. 1-0 LP.
24 mins and a long ball over the top, Castro lobs the ball over the advancing keeper but it rebounds away off the post. Unlucky there.
2 minutes from half time, and another good chance for LP, again Araujo finds space inside the box but the keeper makes a good save.
A minute later Castro goes clear, but his pullback gets cleared.
Half Time – Las Palmas 1 Córdoba 0
Good half for LP and they have created plenty of chances. They should be at least a couple up but we know what happens when they don’t take their chances!!!! Lets hope they don’t chuck this one away tonight.
54mins – and a good chance for the away team, ball cuts back and the shot is saved by the legs of the young Martinez in the home goal.
Straight up to the other end, and good chance for Castro but his header is too high.
The away side are starting to get back into this match, on 82 mins they get a good chance but the shot is well wide. LP need to be careful or else they will let another lead slip away.
More pressure from Córdoba but LP manage to keep them out and hold on for a vital win.
Full Time – Las Palmas 1 Cordoba 0
The Saint Verdict – A much needed win and with 4 games remaining and 8 points clear of the relegation positions , I think LP are now safe. Another game where we were hanging on at the end where we should of been 3/4 goals up at half time. Yet again a small crowd of just under 7,000 took out the frustrations with jeers towards the chairman just before the end.

The Saint: Las Palmas v Elche

1/4/19
After a good away performance last week against Granada, where LP let slip their lead once again at the last minute for another draw. Las Palmas entertained Elche on Sunday, who are 2 places below them in mid table.
After a slow start to the game, LP wins corner in the  7th minute.
Ten minutes later the first shot of the match falls to Rafa Mir but his effort goes high and wide.
Not much action for the entire first half, just plenty of misplaced passes and poor tackles resulting in 4 bookings already for the home side.
On 43mins, finally a decent cross from the left and the ball drops nicely for Mir but his shot is well saved.
Half Time – well a very poor half, only one shot at goal and far too many poor passes , with simply not enough forward thinking in their play. Lets hope for a better 2nd half.
A better beginning from the home side and they win a free kick on the edge of the box. But once again it was wasted.
LP’s Mono comes on and at least he looks like he’s trying to get his side going and playing some forward passes. Mir breaks through on 61mins but fires his shot at the keepers legs.
73 minutes gone and a good move down the left sends Castro clear but his shot is saved from a tight angle.
Just as the players are starting to get tired, the match finally starts opening up. Just one goal should win this!
Unfortunately it falls to the away side. Ball played into the box, Raul in the home goal comes off his line but doesn’t collect the ball and the big Elche centre forward coolly places his shot into an empty net. 0-1.
With 10mins remaining LP push for an equaliser but still can’t create any decent chances.
Full Time – Las Palmas 0 Elche 1
The Verdict of The Saint – another really poor display from UD Las Palmas. As the game went on they made too many poor choices and were far too slow getting the ball forward, seems they would rather look for the sideway pass.
The home fans vented their anger at the chairman once again in the closing mins for yet another poor display at home. Any hope of reaching the play-offs is well and truly gone now. Lets hope we have a few youngsters in reserve waiting to prove themselves in the last 5 home games of the season and give the poor fans something to cheer about.

The Return of The Saint: Las Palmas v Mallorca

17/3/19

After my 3 month long midseason break The Saint returns to find yet another new manager. That’s 7 in 2 seasons!!!!! Now it’s the ex West Brom Manager Pepe Mel. Lets hope he can turn things around for beleaguered UD Las Palmas.
LP are sitting mid-table, still drawing in far too many games. But after a good away win at Deportivo last Sunday (10 March), the home fans are hoping for an upbeat performance and a home win against the Balearic side who sit 2 places above them.

5mins gone and Mallorca win the first corner of the night. They have started as the much livelier of the 2 teams.
Images courtesy of UDLasPalmas.es
Then on 8mins, a good move down the left, with the ball played into the box and a lovely flick by Rafa Mir finds the back of the net. 1-0 LP. Totally against the run of play.
Still more pressure from the away side and on 17mins, their left winger strolls unchallenged into the box and squares to Budimir who slots the ball into a empty net. 1-1
26mins a great advantage played by the ref letting LP break, but Mir’s angle is too tight and is saved.
2 minutes later a chance for Mallorca, more poor marking leaves their midfield player clean and through but for a good save by Raul.
Then a quick break by LP, Momo goes clear down the left wing but his shot is easily saved by the away keeper when Momo needed to have pulled the ball back for a tap in.

Half Time – Las Palmas 1 Mallorca 1
The Saint’s Half Time Verdict – An even half of football with both sides making basic mistakes. LP will be disappointed in the way they gave up their lead and conceded an otherwise poor goal. LP need to get Mir more involved as he looks dangerous upfront.

Images courtesy of UDLasPalmas.es
60mins gone but still no chances for either side.
Then in the 61st minute a good break from Mallorca but Budimir sees his shot go just wide off the far post, followed quickly by another good chance for the visitors, but this time the shot is easily saved.
Mir gets into a good position on the right wing but delivers a poor centre.
74mins and a big chance for Mallorca but somehow they miss from just a few yards out. The game has started to open up now, however its at the wrong end. A free kick is played into the box, finds the unmarked Raillo who plants his header into the net 1-2.LP make a couple of substitutions to try and get back into the game but fail to make any more good chances.

Full Time – Las Palmas 1 Mallorca 2
The Saint Verdict – a fair bit very disappointing result. After the good away win last week the home fans were hoping for a win and a good performance but the team fail to Delivery on both counts. Mallorca looked the better side and deserved their win. LP lack service to the front 2 and failed to produce any good chances apart from the goal. The new manager has certainly got his work cut out over the next few months but will he get the chance to try and turn things around with the chairman very keen on changing the manager when things goes wrong !!!

Next home match – Elche 31/3/19 19.00 KO PIO PIO

The Saint: Las Palmas V Granada

16/11/2018
Las Palmas hosting top of the league Granada. Before tonight’s game, LP sit in 6th position 6 points behind the leaders.
10mins and a well worked free kick by the visitors fails to materialise after a weak final shot.
14mins in and LP take their first shot but Tana’s effort is well saved.
24mins a powerful shot from Granada from about 35yds out but Raul produces an excellent save.
32mins another good effort from Granada but this time just a bit too high.
Then in the 42nd min a quick break by the home side and Araujo finds space on the left side of the box , he cuts in and takes a shot, the quick thinking Castro gets on the end of it to deflect it past the keeper! 1-0 Las Palmas.
Half Time – Las Palmas 1 Granada 0
HT Verdict – a very close game with not many attempts at goal. Both teams looking tight in defence. Granada went close with some long range shots but some very clever play by Castro put the home team in front at half time. Like most weeks, we need to get another as the last few home games we have dropped points from winning positions.
It doesn’t take long for Granada to be back on level terms. 49mins and a corner for Granada, their big centre forward wins the header at the front post and straight into the back of the net. 1-1.
54mins LP try their luck from long range but it’s an easy save for the keeper.
67mins good work between Castro and Araujo, whose shot is well saved at the near post.
78mins more pressure being applied from Las Palmas and the ball falls nicely to Araujo just inside the box on the left, he takes a touch and shoots across the keeper into the bottom right corner. 2-1 Las Palmas
82mins Granada break into the box, Raul makes a rushed challenge and ref gives a penalty. But luckily for Raul he guesses the right way and makes a good save diving to his left.
Then on 86mins a long ball into the box by Granada, ball not cleared and Granada manage to bundle it over the line. 2-2.
No more chances and the game ends in another draw.
Final Score – Las Palmas 2 Granada 2
The Saint Verdict – again Las Palmas can’t hold on to a lead. They have already dropped too many points from winning positions this season and are drawing too many games especially at home. The home defence looked poor tonight and some poor marking and play cost them once again.
Late last night a surprise announcement comes out from the club with reports that it is Adiós to head coach Manolo Jiminez, and a welcome back to Paco Herrera. Club president, Miguel Á. Ramírez, tells the crowd “I have spoken with Paco Herrera. Tomorrow he will land on the island and become the coach of Las Palmas.” Herrera was the man who took LP up in the play offs in the 2014/15 season. Lets hope he can do the same again!!
