The island´s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has launched a new bicycle loan service with with hundreds having tried the so-called Sítycleta in its first days of operation: promoting sustainable mobility and the use of community bikes for short urban journeys.
The new fleet of vehicles are made of reinforced aluminum with anti-corrosion treatment resistant to the coastal air and humidity and weighing 23 kilograms. They have front and rear reflective LED lights. The electric bike has a Brose 250 W antivibration motor with a battery range of between 60 to 120 kilometers. In addition, there is a PMR bicycle service for people with reduced mobility.
The new service includes 375 smartbikes, 20 electric and 2 for PMR. An improvement to the app software has also been implemented: so that the user knows at all times where there are available bicycles, allows them to pay with their mobile, and includes GPS and information about the routes.
There are two methods of using this service:
Subscriber: you must be registered on the free system ( the sitycleta app for mobiles, through www.sitycleta.com or register directly at the terminal ). As a subscriber, the loan period for each use is 30 minutes. If you want to extend the 30 minutes, the bicycle must rest 15 minutes between free uses. You can use the bicycle for more than 30 minutes without waiting, but will pay a fee of €0.50 for every additional 30 minute period up to two hours. The objective is that, being a shared resource, other users will be able to have bicycles available. The subscriber’s fee is €40 per year, which includes unlimited 30-minute trips with 15-minute breaks between each use. There will also be monthly and weekly payments available.
Occasional: you can choose between different rates per time slot. It is flexible and that’s why you only pay for what you use. The price for using the service occasionally is €1.50 per 30 minutes for conventional bicycles and €2.50 for electric bicycles.

Sitycleta E-bike community transport system launched in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Sítycleta is now a reality. The new public bike service in the island's capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is already operational and available to all citizens. An authentic revolution for the island, which continues its evolution towards a more sustainable mobility future, investing in a public bicycle service which is modern, smart, safe, comfortable and of the highest quality.
The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Augusto Hidalgo, together with the councilor for Economic Promotion, Tourism and Employment, Pedro Quevedo; the councilor of Mobility, José Eduardo Ramírez; and the General Director of Mobility, Heriberto Dávila, last Sunday, April 8, inaugurated the new system in the Plaza de la Feria.
The day was aimed at famiies and workers in order to introduce the public bicycle system, with all who were interested, being able to try the new bikes, a resource that promotes sustainable mobility and the use of the bike for short urban journeys.
The event was attended by numerous groups that are friends of cycling and included stands with shops dedicated to this sport. Citizens were informed about the registration into the system and the various features. The technicians of the municipal company SAGULPA, in charge of the management of Sítycleta, explained the functionalities and improvements to their intelligent bicycle.

The Sítycleta comes at a time when Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is mature and ready to receive this much more modern, intelligent, sustainable, comfortable and high quality resource. In addition, after years with a cycle load system that has become obsolete, the new scheme will give a definitive boost to the bicycle as an alternative means of transport within the city.
