Culture: The 52nd Opera Season of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria starts on 21 February

The 52nd edition of the Opera season in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is composed of five operas, which starts with Don Carlo, followed by Norma in March, Tosca will be performed in April and Così fan tutte and La Sonnambula in May.
Gran Canaria has a historical tradition linked to the opera that was founded in those first merchants who stopped at the island on the way to America or returned to Europe after crossing the Atlantic. During their stops, these travellers began to crave the same enterteinments they enjoyed on the continent, so Las Palmas de Gran Canaria began to program leisure activities such as classical music concerts, theatre plays & opera performances.
Opera Don Carlo, by Giuseppe Verdi starts the season this week, with the last performance on Saturday 23 February. It will be the fourth time this Verdi opera has been presented as part of Opera season, in an Italian version with 4 acts.
Musical director Sesto Quatrini, leads the Philharmonic Orchestra, and Olga Santana will be the director of the Opera choir. Starring will be tenor Sergio Escobar, soprano Rebeka Lokar, baritone, Giovanni Meoni, the mezzo-soprano, Varduhi Abrahamyan and basses, Rubén Amoretti and Marco Spotti.
The Story: Elizabeth of Valois is promised in marriage to Don Carlos of Spain, as part of a peace treaty between the two kingdoms. They meet and fall in love – but no sooner have they declared their love than news comes that the terms of the treaty have changed: Elizabeth is to marry Carlos’s father Philip instead.
Elizabeth, now Carlos’s step-mother, loves him still, but is horrified by his declarations of love. The Grand Inquisitor urges King Philip to have Carlos executed for the sake of the faith and the stability of the kingdom. Carlos decides to flee. He meets Elizabeth one last time to bid farewell – but the Inquisitor’s forces descend upon them.
The opera as a differentiating element
The opera season stands out for providing this popular destination with a multicultural connection between Gran Canaria with the world through its history, music, culture, and traditions. These representations have become an important tourist attraction for the island, since it allows our visitors to enjoy an original experience that differentiates it from other destinations.
