We have an absolutely gorgeous mid July weekend ahead with weather predictions plenty of sun and blue skies, highs of 30º and 31ºC on the south of Gran Canaria. Some cloud cover is likely to the north of the island, with even a possibility of rain, but highs still around 26º in the shade.  Remember direct sunlight is likely to be much hotter.

Festivities and events to enthrall and excite you this weekend, include the continuing Fiestas in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, around the island coastal communities, the Big Bang Vintage market returns to the capital, and the biggest windsurf competition on the islands, with its very own music festival, starts this Friday and much, much more besides…

12-14 JULY, ARGUINEGUÍN, MOGÁN
FIESTAS DEL CARMEN 

The main summer festivities for the south western municipality of Mogán, in honour of ‘La Virgen del Carmen’, holy mother of sailors and fisher-folk, continues in Arguineguín until 21 July and round the coast in Playa de Mogán 16-28 July. The program includes a wide variety of traditional, cultural, religious and festive events for everyone to join. Tuesday 16 July will be the main feast day for the Virgen del Carmen and so also a local bank holiday from Arguineguín, to Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, to Puerto de Mogán and up to the original old village of Pueblo de Mogán.

On Friday, at 18:30 the Bajada de la Rama, “the lowering of the branch”. (A quirky, youthful street party, based on a pre-christian throwback to the original natives of these islands, praying for their gods to bring them rain after the hot summer months) Expect dancing in the streets and water EVERYWHERE! The fun water party procession departing from Plaza del Pino Seco
Later in the evening from 22:30 El Carmen Festival at the Plaza Negra, known these days as the Plaza del Mercadillo, and at 23:00 DJ’s entertaining on Calle José Manuel Santana.

On Saturday  at 15:00 Foam party at Plaza de las Marañuelas 22:00 concert by a local child talent ”Evelyn” , 23:00 music performances at Plaza del Mercadillo and at 23:30 “chiringos de music” at Calle José Manuel Santana.

On Sunday, at Plaza de las Marañuelas between 11:30-14:30 sporty play area for kids and in the evening a children musical at 20:30 at the same plaza.


12-14 JULY, LAS PALMAS
BIG BANG VINTAGE FESTIVAL

3 Day Festival of Rock and Roll and retro vintage culture harking back to the 40s, 50s and 60s, in the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Throughout the weekend there is a vintage market, concerts ( including many bands from UK ) djs, burlesque, fashion, dance, exhibitions, cinema, collecting, recycling, classic motor, tattoo, hairdressing, Mr & Miss Big Bang contest, solidarity barbershop, competitions, food trucks, children’s shows and more.

On Friday at 17:00 the 3rd edition of Big Bang Vintage Festival starts in Parque San Telmo 

On Saturday and Sunday the fun starts at 11:00 until early hours …

12-13 JULY, LAS PALMAS
TEMUDAS

The 23nd edition of the International theatre, music and dance festival is on until 2 August in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. During the festival there are a wide range of extraordinary free outdoor performances and concerts. A magnificent spectacle for people of all ages, a month of world class performance mainly in the outdoors and totally free to attend.

ON FRIDAY :
At 20:30 at Plaza del Pilar Nuevo
– Mattatoio Sospeso “Los Amantes del cielo”.

A 45 minutes Gestural and clown theatre; vertical dance from France and Italy. Irony, skill and precision in a piece where acrobatics, circus, street theatre, music and poetry have a place.


At 22:00 Plaza de Santa Ana – Jab Iniciativas y producciones “Gara and Jonay, catharsis electronics”.

A 70 minutes multidisciplinary street show from Spain ( Canary islands).
This ancient aboriginal legend is reinterpreted exploiting its most ritual sense.

 


12-14 JULY, SANTA LUCIA
GRAN CANARIA WIND & WAVES FESTIVAL 2019

The islands’ biggest windsurf competition and festival starts this Friday and goes on until 21 July. Windsurfing, children’s activities, fashion and live concerts at Pozo Izquierdo beach. The competition itself takes place pretty much every day.

Pozo Izquierdo (Santa Lucía) will bring together the best windsurfers from all around the world in the most anticipated sports & music festival of the Summer.

On Friday the official registration and opening starting at 10:00 and from midday the competition starts. Children’s workshops at 16:00 and later in the evening at 23:00 pink night with the concert by “Salvapantallas” and DJ to follow.

On Saturday Children’s workshops at 16:00 and later in the evening at 23:0 pink night with the concert by Tutto dúran and DJ to follow.  On Sunday a fashion show at 19:00.


13-14 JULY, TEROR
FIESTA DEL AGUA

As part of the Fiestas del Aqua in Teror 2019, there is the 20th edition of regional fair of Canarian artisans during the weekend.

On Saturday 10:00-20:00 and on Sunday 09:00-16:00.

SATURDAY 13 JULY, ARUCAS
MERCADO AGRICOLA

Next Saturday, the Island’s main agricultural market will be at the Agricultural Experimental Farm in Arucas.

From 9:00 to 13:30, with a great variety of stalls and activities for visitors to enjoy . The market on this Saturday also marks the 11th anniversary and you will get to join in the celebrations with children activities, tastings, raffle, show cooking.

The island’s main agricultural market is always on Saturdays, alternating between Arucas or Vecindario. The richest, freshest and most healthy seasonal produce. Fruit, vegetables, cheeses, meats, fish, sweets, bread, honey, mushrooms and many more products directly from the hands of the producer.


SATURDAY 13 JULY, LAS PALMAS 
CANARIAS JAZZ & MÁS HEINEKE

The Heineken International Canarias Jazz & más Festival is on until 21 July with around 50 concerts and gigs happening across the islands. You can see all the concerts and performances here, including the ticketed events.

On Saturday in parque municipal de Santa Brígida, starting at 20:30.
Concerts by Rayko León Quartet and Bette Smith. Soul artist Bette Smith and band continue to unfurl their irrepressible power and passion on stage.

FIESTAS DEL CARMEN – LA ISLETA

The district of La Isleta in the capital also celebrate Nuestra Señora de Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen).  The patron virgin of sailors is celebrated between 6 July – 27 July here. Romeria, the pilgrimage offering, will be on 20.7.

On Saturday, the Queen’s Gala at 21:00 at the football field  Recinto Ferial Porto Pi
On Sunday, Gala Reina Infantil, the child queen cala at 20:00 at Recinto Ferial Porto Pi
