Well, a long weekend ahead as Monday is officially a holiday; Twelfth night is almost upon us, the Epiphany, preceded by the Noche de Reyes, or night of the kings, when 3 wise men are expected to visit every home in the kingdom, in celebration of a royal child. Many towns and cities throughout Spain will be hosting extravagant major events and parades to welcome these strangers from far off lands who mark the final culmination of seasonal gift giving that will put an end to this year’s heady mix of yule time feasting, Saturnalian revelry and of course the main christian winter celebrations.

There is plenty to do and see, with craft and artisan markets across the island, the main ones in Las Palmas Telde and even one in Vecindario.

Agüimes 2019: 64th Live Reyes de Magos Performance @ Colegio Nuestra Señora del Rosario

Jan 5 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Since 1956, the “Magna Cabalgata de Reyes”, an outdoor theatrical performance, has been held in Agüimes. The script for this staging emerged from the inkwell of Orlando Hernández Martín, a “whole and serious” figure of Canarian literature, born in this town in 1936.

After almost sixty years, that “Magna Cabalgata”, was renamed Auto de Los Reyes Magos on June 6, 2009, and is still performed every year through the streets of this beautiful ancient town.

The royal procession departs from the gardens of the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Rosario to tour various stages arranged in different parts of the old town.

On the backs of stout camels of calm walking, three majestic silhouettes are drawn. They are the Magi that march solemnly following the trail of a star, the Star of Bethlehem, which guides them to the “portal”.

And while they travel their way, from time to time, they stop to shred a script that inflames the illusion of the children and increases the sleeplessness of the parents.
