Bodegas Tunte obtains two more Gold and a Silver Medal at the World Extreme Wine Competition in Italy
Multi-award winning local wine brand Bodegas Tunte have obtained three more awards of real merit, this time at the World Extreme Wine Competition held in Italy, with two Gold Medals for their exquisite Oro Blanco and sweet Valara wines and a Silver medal for their highly acclaimed Berode.
This oenological contest is reserved only for wines produced in mountain regions or from so-called heroic crops, that is, those grown on terraces or terrains with a more than 30 percent incline, an altitude greater than 500 meters or on small islands.
The wines of Gran Canaria, therefore, pretty much all fall within the requirements of this contest that aims to reward the structural difficulties faced by wine growers who produce such wines and highlight the unique characteristics of these products.
The wine sector on Gran Canaria is prospering at the moment due to efforts over recent years and an increase in last year’s harvest of 160,000 kilos. The sector’s good fortunes are also being reflected in the obtaining of outstanding recognition at international competitions thanks to their particular quality and the novel peculiarities that our climate, varieties and our volcanic soils give to the wine.
In the International Wine Challenge 2018, the largest wine competition in the world, last May in the UK, Berode and Valara both of this same Bodega won Bronze Medals, while Oro Blanco de Tirajana was recognized with a special mention of merit.
Tunte also obtained a Silver award at the Muscats du Monde Annual Wine Competition for Valara, in France this July.
And this year in particular this relatively new and progressive Bodega brand have received much recognition, with excellent results for their three primary wines that have scored well in the International Wine Challenge Contest, the Brussels World Contest, the Lyon International Competition, Bacchus Awards, Wines and Women, Alhóndiga, Agrocanarias and the Insular Tasting of Gran Canaria.
Bodegas Tunte, created in 1998, is a family business that has 3.5 hectares of vineyards of the volcanic malvasía, verdello and albillo grape varieties in San Bartolomé de Tirajana at an altitude of 900 meters. After a generational change in 2015 and the incorporation of renowned winemaker Alberto González, the Bodega has embarked on an process of innovation that has resulted in them gaining more than 23 regional, national and international awards over the last four years.
