It’s a hot hot hot July weekend ahead with the first of the true summer heatwaves hitting the archipelago. This weekend there are excellent options and varied events to go, see and experience. In particular on the south of the island there is the festivities in honour of our lady del Carmen, patron saint of sailors, there is a mud party, free performances, a big pets fair, a summer night party as well as markets to offer all sorts of local produce for the coming weekend on Gran Canaria.

Remember that the summer “rebajas” are in full swing in the main commercial centre shops as well so take advantage of these summer sales. Football and a World cup in Russia have taken the final eight to the quarter finals so expect many bars full of people watching the games … especially on Saturday for the much anticipated England – Sweden match.

6-7 July, Las Palmas
LPA TEMUDAS

TEMUDAS, the 22nd edition of the theatre, dance and music Festival 5 July – 4 August 2018 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. During the festival there are a wide range of extraordinary free outdoor performances and concerts. This is what’s happening this coming weekend:

On Friday : La Tal : The Incredible Box
at 20:30 at Plaza del Pilar Nuevo.
Duration: 50 min. Free entry. (From Barcelona)

When The Incredible Box premiered over 150 years ago, it was an outstanding success. But, what would happen if the same show was repeated for decades and decades? The Incredible Box, the greatest show of all time would become… the most bizarre, absurd, ridiculous and extravagant show of all time. Its director ―the founder’s great-grandson― and two eccentric assistants will attempt to maintain its wonder, but that won’t stop them from being three characters walking on thin ice. Some parts of the original costumes, stage design and spirit may endure, but the current singers lose their voices, the acrobats lose their reflections, the actors their memories… an utter fantasy filled with delight awaits you!

On Friday and Saturday: Teatro Kdo / fireworks : La Maleta at 22:00 at Plaza de Santa Ana. Duration 60 min.. Free Entry

The show La Maleta [The Suitcase], co-produced by the companies Teatro KDO and Fireworks under the direction of José Pedro Hernández, with Yanely Hernández acting as assistant director, was written by Enrique and Yeray Bazo, while Julio Nieto executes its exquisite stage design. It has as its root Pedro Lezcano’s most famous poem, one of the 20th century’s most important Canarian intellectuals. Under his influence, a gigantic suitcase will serve as the stage for the different spaces where the show takes place, stunningly changing during the performance and giving room to a totally original staging.

In this visual setting, seven characters, who are victims of forced emigration, tell their realities in search of freedom via a cross-disciplinary performance combining theater, dance, acrobatics and music.
